Yahoo Lets Developers Drink from the Update Firehose

Yahoo is adding a whole new layer to real time. Yesterday, they announced the Updates Firehose for developers, “a web service for accessing and searching the full, real-time index of Yahoo! Updates.” And that includes all Yahoo properties—from Flickr to Delicious to comments on news stories. All public information posted on the service goes into the Firehose.

Naturally, developers can filter the information and manipulate it using Yahoo’s own Yahoo Query Language (YQL), an SQL-like query language. Developers can use it to call common keywords used across all updates or restrict the info to updates from a specific application, location, language, URL or type (e.g., status updates, ratings, comments, and reviews).

The updates included in the Firehose make it apparent the service is appropriately named:

  • 750,000+ ratings a day (including those from Yahoo! News, Buzz, Movies, Travel, TV and more),
  • 8,000+ reviews a day (including Yahoo! Local, Shopping, Cricket, Travel and more),
  • 150,000+ comments/day (including Yahoo! News, Buzz, Sports, OMG stories and more),
  • status updates,
  • Flickr uploads,
  • Delicious bookmarking,
  • Open App activity,
  • YouTube favoriting,
  • Last.fm listening,
  • and many, many others.

And like I said before, this is just for the information marked as “public” (set to viewable by anyone).

This can be a huge opportunity for lots of things—but the first thing that springs to mind around here is what a great tool this could be for monitoring all Yahoo properties as part of reputation management.

What do you think? What kind of applications would you like to see for Yahoo’s public update data?

Microsoft Dynamics GP Version Update Notes

Being on the current version of your Corporate ERP application is probably not mandatory, rather good recommendation and advice.  However if you are on really outdated or antiquity accounting application version, upgrade is recommended and definitely wise step to do, and there are several factors to consider, please see them below in paragraphs.  In the case of Microsoft Dynamics GP or as it was formerly known Great Plains Dynamics, eEnterprise or Great Plains Accounting for DOS, Windows and Mac – upgrade has another business decision related specific as the requirement to be current in Microsoft Dynamics GP annual enhancement program.  Let’s begin our review:

1. Outdate Corporate ERP version.  Here, even if it works OK or even exceeds expectations, please consider the following potential problems: incompatibility with new Hardware and Server Operating System (Windows Server 2008, for example), SQL Server Platform (versions prior to Dynamics GP 9.0 are not compatible with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and 2008), new printer drivers incompatibility, etc.  What happens if you need new user licenses or new modules for outdated Great Plains version which is no longer supported (8.0, 7.5, 7.0, 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, 4.0)?  The answer is simple – you will not be able to purchase new modules or user licenses as Microsoft Business Solutions doesn’t support these versions

2. Reenrollment into Microsoft Dynamics GP annual enhancement program penalty.  Reenrollment cost might be substantial if you are not in the program for several years.  The penalty amount might be comparable to outstanding balance for the summary of all the unpaid annual enhancement Quotes amount.  If your company shrank, Microsoft Dynamics GP software repurchase might be the way out to get the regkey  for newest version and enabling Dynamics GP version update process.  From time to time Microsoft may have so-called old customer forgiveness campaign, where you can reenroll your company back to the program for discounted penalty price

3. Good Microsoft Dynamics GP version upgrade practice.  We recommend you to be reasonably conservative and there is safe enough to skip one version and when you decide to do upgrade, wait at least two service pack to be released for targeted version of Microsoft Dynamics GP.  For example, as we are writing these lines in November 2009, current version is Dynamics GP 10.0 and it has Service Pack 4 released – as such – in our opinion it is perfect time to upgrade to GP 10.0.

4. Test Upgrade.  As upgrade is sort of surgery, and its results are data driven (meaning that if your Dynamics GP company has errors and orphan records, due to multiple aborted batch posting – you may have issues during upgrade) – it is generally good idea to have Test upgrade first

5. Upgrade Path.  Normally, if you are one or two versions behind, upgrade has only one step: you or better your Dynamics GP consultant read upgrade technical paper, apply required service pack to your old version, install new version and apply required Service Pack to the new version.  Then run Dynamics GP Utilities to begin Server upgrade.  When Server upgrade is done, install new version GP workstations.  Then upgrade FRx Financial Reports, ReportWriter reports, Integration Manager, Customizations (such as Great Plains Dexterity custom add-ons), third party Dynamics GP ISV partners products (review your Dynamics.set file to identify custom add-ons).  If you have eConnect, SQL Stored Procedures custom integrations, ecomerce integrations – those consider special upgrade considerations

6. Very old version upgrade path.  If you are on Great Plains Accounting for DOS or Windows, Great Plains Dynamics on Pervasive SQL Server 2000/Btrieve or Ctree – upgrade should include more than one step.  GPA and GP on Pervasive and Ctree require Migration Tool to move them to Great Plains Dynamics 7.5 on MS SQL Server

7. Microsoft Small Business Financials migration to Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 with following upgrade to GP 10.0.  As you may be aware that Microsoft Small Business Financials/Manager product line is in phasing out.  The last version is SBF 9.0.  Consider migration to Microsoft Dynamics GP Business Ready Business Essential licensing.  There is Small Business Financials 9.0 to Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 Migration Tool – this tool should be trusted to professional Microsoft Dynamics GP consultant

8. Dynamics GP Dexterity Customizations Upgrade.  You should request original source code from your Great Plains Dexterity programmer, who did your customization a while ago, this Dexterity source code should be reviewed in the sense of being compatible with new targeted GP version.  If you do not have access to original Dexterity programmer, you should locate new and reliable Dexterity Guru

9. If upgrade is outside of your Budget.  We respect your situation and we support virtually all the versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP, Great Plains Dynamics and eEnterprise, Great Plains Accounting for DOS, Windows and Macintosh.  We have local offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston metropolitan areas, and if you are in USA, Canada or Internationally we support you via web sessions and remote connections (preferred).  We speak English, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian

Microsoft Dynamics GP 7.5, 9.0 version update notes

As recession seems to be over, now it is time to take care about your Corporate ERP application, and if it is Microsoft Dynamics GP (also known as Microsoft Great Plains and Great Plains Dynamics), this small publication might be helpful on introduction level.  When talking about Corporate ERP application upgrade, it is always a good idea to check with your Microsoft Dynamics GP Partner, as time is going on and new versions or Service packs should or could be released, this article is intended to give you the idea about the steps and provide some initial comfort level on Great Plains version upgrade decision making.  Upgrade is possible for all Great Plains versions, including Great Plains Accounting for DOS and Windows (if this is your case or if you are on Great Plains Dynamics on Pervasive SQL 2000/Btrieve or Ctree/Faircom, please review our earlier publications), however in this article we will concentrate on Microsoft Dynamics GP version 7.5, 8.0 and 9.0 upgrade to Dynamics GP 10.0 (current version as of December 2009, new version Microsoft Dynamics GP 11.0 should be released in May 2010)

1. Microsoft Great Plains 7.5 upgrade.  This version was renamed (or possibly to say rebranded) into Microsoft Dynamics GP 7.5.  If you install it from original CD – it will be named as Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains.  if you are MBS Great Plains 7.5, there are two ways to update to Dynamics GP 10.0, where both have two steps.  First way (we recommend it as Dynamics GP 9.0 is still supported by Microsoft Business Solutions and you can see more recent service packs, supposedly fixing problems with upgrade).  Second way is upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics GP 8.0 first and then apply GP 8.0 SP 4.0 (MBS is no longer supporting Dynamics GP version 8.0, and some of the upgrade fixes might not be reflected in abandoned Dynamics GP 8.0 version and its service packs).  And Second step is to upgrade from Dynamics GP 9.0 (or 8.0) to GP 10.0.  Please, note that you cannot just insert Dynamics GP 10.0 CD1 (without incorporated Service packs), first step is to install Dynamics GP workstation from SD1 of GP10.0 and then apply Service Pack (4 or 3).  Please, note that Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 has new security model, based on Security Roles, security conversion was successfully implemented with Dynamics GP 10.0 Service Pack 1 (we are a bit conservative and would like to say, that there were issues up to Dynamics GP 10.0 Service Pack 3)

2. Microsoft Dynamics GP 8.0 upgrade.  If you are already on Microsoft Dynamics GP version 8.0, you will need just one step to get updated to GP version 10.0.  Dynamics GP 10.0 with Service Pack 3 DVD should do the job (available to download from MSDN or your Partner or Customer Source).  There is no need for you to upgrade to Dynamics GP 9.0, as you can go directly to Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0

3. Upgrading from Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 to 10.0.  This upgrade is especially sensitive to Service Packs.  Do not expect simply to insert GP 10.0 CD1 into DC drive and begin upgrade process – upgrade requires Service Packs matching list for GP 9.0 and for GP 10.0.  In this article we would like to share with you one substantial Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 upgrade issue, when you are downloading Dynamics GP 10.0 DVD with Service Pack 3 incorporated

**ISSUE RESOLVED**This issue is resolved with Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 Service Pack 4.  Install Service Pack 4 prior to launching Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 Utilities for the update to resolve the issue. Click HERE to download Service Pack 4.

If you are updating from Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 with version 9.00.0337 or later and using Microsoft SQL Server 2000, the SEE30303 table will fail with the error “[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 1: Incorrect syntax near ‘(‘.” This table is for the Historical Inventory Trial Balance (HITB) product.  Even if you do not use the product, the update will fail as it is installed by default.  This issue will be addressed in an upcoming service pack.  Refer to the workaround steps below:

a. Do not restore the company database.  Leave the company database at the failed state.

b. Close Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 Utilities.

c. Run the following script in Query Analyzer:

UPDATE DYNAMICS..DU000030 set Status = 0, errornum=0 where fileNumber = 1 and PRODID = 5597

d. Run the following script in Query Analyzer to create the required index on the SEE30303 table:

CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX [AK5SEE30303] ON [dbo].[SEE30303]

( [GLPOSTDT] ASC, [ITEMNMBR] ASC, [QTYTYPE] ASC,

[SEQNUMBR] ASC )

By the way, the issue above is reported to be resolved in Microsoft Dynamics GP Service Pack 4

Microsoft Great Plains Version Update to 10.0 Latest Notes

According to Microsoft Dynamics GP technical support, today on November 16, 2007 MBS release Service Pack 1 for GP 10.0, and by doing this ended long lasting GP upgrade path problem: if you were on GP 9.0 higher than SP2, then you had to wait with upgrading to GP version 10.0. In this small article we would like to stress some of the known issues fixed in 10 SP1:

1. IV10200 upgrade freezing. According to MBS technical sources, if you had over several hundred thousand records in this table, the chances were high that upgrade will fail. In our practice we have upgrade example, where number of records in IV10200 is below one hundred thousand, and it was still crashing at this step

2. GP 9.0 to 10.0 upgrade performance issue. From various sources we had the story that upgrade from 9.0 to 10.0 took a way longer than upgrade from 7.0 to 10.0. This issue is fixed in GP 10.0 SP1

3. Security migration 9.0->10.0 failure issue. As you might know if you follow upgrade wizard and select default path for GP 10 workstation installation, security migration should fail. And this is due to the spaces in “Microsoft Dynamics GP” path. In the past what you had to do is supersede default installation path with the one without spaces

4. Upgrade recommendations. If you are on version 9.0, then install GP 10.0 and apply service pack 1 prior to launching GP utilities

5. Security upgrade workaround. In GP 10.0 Security architecture was completely redesigned and now it represents nice tasks and roles. However for you it means that you will have to come through homework and review existing security settings, especially former 9.0 user classes and then base GP security roles on GP modules specific assignment: GL, Project Accounting, Sales Order Processing, Purchase Order Processing, Inventory Control, etc.

Is Google Planning Another Page Rank Update?

Those of you that pay attention to the Google Page Rank are still waiting for another Google update. It’s been almost 90 days since the last Google update and word around the web is that Google should be doing another mass update in August.

Many of you built new sites in the beginning of 2007 and still have no Google page rank after all the hard work you put into building out quality back links, optimizing and adding new pages, and every other tedious detail involved with properly optimizing your site for the engines.

Well the word is that the wait is almost over. Google will be updating all its servers and handing out grades in the near future. All the speculation about what will work and won’t work for the best results in your sites placement are about to show themselves.

Once the Google page rank update starts, it will take a couple of weeks to complete so you will probably see some fluctuation in your page rank on different pages of your site for a while but things will settle down and your new page rank will be good until the next update.

Will your Google page rank go up or down on the next massive Google update, only time will tell. If you have done all the work required to rank well, then you will mostly be rewarded a pretty reasonable Google page rank and the other search engine will follow right behind the master.

Until next time,

Shawn Hickman

Google algorithm update Jagger

Google algorithm update ‘Jagger’

This week we discuss the latest Google update, how it might affect your site, and how you can recover if your site lost its position as a result of this update.

The Jagger update started over a month ago and lasted 3 weeks. The update included updating the PageRank of all spidered pages, updating the number of backlinks and most importantly, changing the way Google ranked web sites for any search query. The key features and effects of this update are highlighted below:
How do we know Google is updating its algorithm?

Most algorithm updates, whether on Google, Yahoo!, MSN or any other search engine, are characterised by sudden, drastic and often frequent changes on the search results pages for any search query. During the Jagger update, the folks at Google were kind enough to warn us a few days into the update that we were witnessing an update!
What has happened as a result of the Google Jagger update?

Underneath the superficial changes in search results, the Jagger update has had a serious effect on the way companies use search engine optimisation to influence ranks. Numerous search engine optimisation experts have theorized on these effects. The most commonly agreed upon conclusions are:

How does Google now value reciprocal links?

There are two aspects to consider for reciprocal links. First, Google considers artificial link building with the aim of influencing rank to be a form of spam, and so if it detects unnatural linking patterns, such as links obtained from link farms or link exchanges between irrelevant sites, it will penalize both the sites for this. Second, inbound links are increasingly weighed in importance according to the relevance of the page and the site where the link originates from to the page it is linking to. So, a link from a gambling site to a site about corrective surgery will be considered almost useless. The only type of reciprocal link building that is encouraged is between related companies in an industry e.g. between theatres and ticket agents or between two ticket agents
How do age of site and age of links influence ranking?

Google does not want spam domains to rank high on a results page, make a quick buck out of their top position and then disappear. As a result it imposes ageing delays on domains and now even on links. Sites which have been around for a while will rank higher. What this means from a search engine optimisation point of view is that it will take longer to see results of direct optimisation and it will also take longer to see the results of any link development work. Search engine optimisation work on new sites can take as much as 9 months to start yielding results for competitive keyphrases.
Relevance… of everything!

Google’s success was based on the relevance of the web sites it found for any user query. Therefore it should come as no surprise that their current algorithm goes a few steps further in rewarding relevance … of everything – of inbound and outbound links to and from a site, titles and headings to actual page content, page content to the rest of the site and so on.
Recovering from Jagger

If your site has been affected, go through the list of features of the Jagger update, and check if your site might have been struck due to any one of those changes in the search engine ranking algorithm. Re-optimise your site for the search engines by removing any offending content and links and immerse yourself in obtaining more relevant inbound links.

Microsoft Great Plains Version Update Faq

Microsoft Dynamics GP ERP version upgrade should be planned, it is not recommended to do it impulsively. In order to facilitate your homework we would like to give you highlights in technical and functional compatibility areas

1. Microsoft Dexterity core. Great Plains is Dexterity application, which has new technologies, incorporated in Dexterity and serving as additions (and in some cases as replacements) to Dex: eConnect, Sharepoint (with approval cycles), Microsoft Office stack integration, plus integrations with Microsoft CRM, RMS and other MS business applications. The message here is to check if you have custom Dexterity logic – this is first step to analyze and address in version upgrade

2. Great Plains Dex modifications upgrade scenarios. Dexterity was designed as GP Dynamics IDE and programming language, and one of its fundamental features is upgradeability. However this should be given to the hands of professional Dexterity programmers. In the best case scenario, you should have DYNAMICS.DIC dictionary with your customization source code (in the case of Dex it is sanscript codes). Dexterity modification upgrade has further specifics, required to be taken to consideration in upgrade, this is outside of the scope here.

3. Third Party modules. Great Plains is the platform, open to Microsoft Business Solutions ISV, who extends GP business logic. Typically these extensions are written in Dexterity and distributed as Dexterity chink. The examples of popular ISV names for Great Plains: Mekorma, Avalara, Intellisol (late 1990th), Albaspectrum, and others. If you deploy third party GP extension module, you should check if third party tool is available for the new version, where you plan to upgrade

4. Reporting. Well, you may have various blends of reporting tools: Crystal Reports, SRS, MS Access, but in our opinion GP ReportWriter reports should be analyzed in the most careful manner in GP version update. Report Writer in turn is Dexterity-written module and it comes back to one of the first GP versions: 3.2 and 4.0, so this is not a surprise that you may encounter multiple surprises and restrictions

5. FRx. This is financial reporting tool, which has connection to GP General Ledger and GL account summaries. FRx upgrade is typically straightforward, in some cases you have to know “known issues”, you should be familiar with sysdata folder, FRX date and time table in Dynamics database. If you got FRx upgrade deadlock, please try to relax and search Microsoft Business Solutions technical knowledge database at partner or customer source

6. Upgrade Paths. How upgrade works behind the scenes? Dexterity utilities looks in Dynamics database which legacy version you are on and then if it has upgrade algorithm from your version it launches the update process. You should know probably all historical GP versions: 3.2, 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 9.0 and current 10.0 (October 2007). FRx versions: 4.0, 5.0, 6.5

7. GPA upgrade and migration. If you are on old Great Plains Accounting for DOS or MS Windows, you need to undergo migration to Microsoft Dynamics GP path. Migration tool is available if you contact your MBS partner

8. Pervasive SQL 2000/Btrieve and Ctree/Faircom Great Plains Dynamics upgrade. If you are on Pervasive or Ctree, then it is version 7.5 or earlier. Microsoft terminated these legacy platforms support in December 2004. MRP software industry deploys annual support fee mechanism to finance accounting software development expenses. In order to get new version registration key, you should be enrolled and current in GP annual enhancement program. If you are current, then you should contact your GP VAR of record to arrange migration from Great Plains Dynamics on Pervasive or Ctree to Microsoft Dynamics GP on MS SQL Server 2000 or 2005

9. No answer. If your topic is not covered in this publication, please feel free to contact us

Google’s Latest Update for Its Algorithm in Detail

Google has recently launched an update for its search engine’s algorithm. Nicknamed “Jagger,” this update has resulted to critical changes in the way that Google gives weight to certain factors that it looks at in coming up for PageRank. Because of this, there have been dramatic changes to Google’s search results. Google for its part has claimed that it is only out to give out more relevant search engine results that would maximize the searcher’s experience.

Over the weeks after the update was implemented, several sites that have not been placed in top spots have suddenly flew in ranking while some of those that have been ranked high previously have found their ranking fluctuating.

What is the update about? And what changes have been introduced into Google’s system?

Older Sites See Prominence in Results

One of the three affected areas is the domain age or the website history. Google has decided to place emphasis on the site’s age in calculating PageRank. One obvious effect of this is that older sites have suddenly appeared in the top spots of every search result page, outdoing the newer sites.

This change has brought about several questionable effects. If the older sites have a lot more information than the relatively newer site that has previously held the top spot, then it is good. But if they don’t, then Google has inadvertently prejudiced against newer sites with better quality. By default, older sites have outdated information that would most likely be irrelevant or lacking information to help a web searcher in his quest for information.

On a positive note, the greater weight on the older sites has resulted to suppression of a black hat technique of launching multiple domains just to gain ranks.

Google Recalculates Values for Backlinks

Google has also made changes to how it gives value to backlinks, or links that point to a site. Previously, Google simply calculates the number of links that point to your site (treating it as a vote of support along the way) in coming with up your page’s ranking. With this update, Google has now placed varying weights depending on the link’s age. Newer links have lesser values compared to links that have existed quite a long way before. Google has adjusted its algorithm in a manner that links start to gain more weight after periods of time.

This update has affected those webmasters that resort to link buying to build up their inbound links. No longer could they depend on these methods to quickly gain rank because any new link posted for the site would still take some time before it could build up some weight to materially affect the site’s ranking.

PageRank Loses Part of its Importance

The latest update has resulted to lesser importance for the PR value in the calculation of ranking. Google apparently has realized that a high PR value is not at all related to a website’s relevance and importance to a search query. PR, after all, is calculated by the number of backlinks to a site together with an importance factor that is determined by how the site being pointed to is related to the site making the referral. High-quality links carry the heaviest weight in the calculation, since these links are coming from sites that are considered relevant (and thus important) to the site being referred.

PageRank has come under various abuses by some SEO experts that use black hat techniques to artificially inflate sites’ PR values. While having high PRs serve little to the page’s actual ranking in results, artificially high PR sites can once in a while swindle a link-buying webmaster to buy links from them.

This is related to the practice of PR buying, where a webmaster buys rights from a high PR site to post a link to his site. This practice stems from the long-running belief within the SEO community that a site being linked by a high-PR site gets the PR value of that site. Hence, webmasters buy links from high-PR sites for that purpose, although with the age delay addition to the algorithm this practice has lost its effectiveness.

There has been speculation that PageRank will be replaced by TrustRank, a similar algorithm used by Google’s competitor Yahoo although this has never been proven by public statements. It is also said that Google might have decided that TrustRank is irrelevant. Since they are similar, Google could have concluded that its own PageRank algorithm is irrelevant as well, although most people find this unlikely.

Google Page Rank Update

Well it finally happened, the Google Page rank update. Google updated all of my page ranks on all of the sites I manage the search engine optimization for. I am happy to say that none of my page ranks haven fallen and several have gained one or two places.
Google’s last page rank update was in April and many webmasters have been waiting since the last update to reap the rewards of all the hard work they have put in optimizing pages, building quality back links, adding continuous fresh content, and holding their breaths.
I haven’t seen any keyword placement movement since the new Google update but it may take up to two full weeks to see how significant the Google page rank still is to search engines like Yahoo and MSN.
I believe Google page rank is still relevant and will impact millions of websites around the world. The Google page rank is a calculation of various areas of your sites worth and as Google adjust its algorithm to come up with the best possible score for your websites value in the market your are trying to place in again.
Many of you are now seeing page ranks on new sites that have had a score of zero for several months. Others of you have see your great page rank go down, which may hurt your overall placement only time will tell.
I have seen the results of page ranks dropping on Text Link sites due to selling of these links but haven’t seen the punishment Google is said to be giving out to people who purchase these links for their sites. I am sure Google is weighing the cheating factor and grading the sites accordingly.
Now that a new Google page rank has been made, don’t stop optimizing your site planning to wait until the last minute to spam the system. Continue working hard as even more and more competitors are coming online as we speak. Do what’s best for your customer and the search engines usually follow right along.
Good content, placing your links in the right places, and streamlining your met tags will always payoff in the end. Remember in search engine optimization, you have to be patient, be diligent, and know that your are targeting the right keywords and audience for your business.
Until the next big Google update, take care of your business and your business will take care of you.
