Pepsi Passes on This Year’s Super Bowl For Social Media

The big game is more than a month away but a winner has already been announced – social media marketing has claimed a victory over traditional advertising with Pepsi’s decision not to run any ads in this year’s Super Bowl. It is the first time in 23 years Pepsi will not run a television commercial on the Super Bowl. The company will spend million on a social media campaign called the Pepsi Refresh Project instead.

Pepsi, headquartered in Purchase, N.Y., spent million last year advertising their products like Pepsi, Doritos and Gatorade on the Super Bowl and was one of the game’s biggest advertisers. Only Anheuser-Busch spent more money. The St. Louis brewer says it will have 5 minutes worth of advertising in the 2010 Super Bowl.

A New Playbook

This is a major shift in marketing strategy. Pepsi’s relationship with the Super Bowl is legendary. Pepsi ads have been some of the most creative in history and the company has always pulled out the stops for the Super Bowl. It makes their move to social media that much more newsworthy.

The Pepsi Refresh Project

The company will launch the Pepsi Refresh Project beginning January 13th. Users will submit their ideas to Pepsi on ways to “refresh” their communities and thereby making them a better place. Each month for 10 months there will be up to 32 potential Pepsi Refresh Grant recipients selected and up to .3 million will be awarded. There will be 2 grants at the 0,000 level, 10 grants at the ,000 level, 10 grants at the ,000 level and 10 grants at the ,000 level.

Pepsi will be looking for ideas from individuals, non-profit organiztions and pro-social businesses that can make a positive impact in the community. Fumble or Touchdown?

This is a giant move for Pepsi, especially because they still spend millions of their yearly advertising budget on television. The fact that they are not spending a dime on traditional advertising to even promote the Refresh Project says a lot for a company like this.

Even if they drop the ball like Procter & Gamble did earlier this year with their self-serving Tide detergent “Loads of Hope” campaign, they will still help communities throughout the country and that’s a good thing. We think the user involvement and voting will help make this a social media success and Pepsi will reap the rewards of a buzz-generating ad campaign.

LG GW990: Redefining the Super Phone

The very first time the words super phone was used this year was probably to refer to the HTC Nexus One. The Google phone is indeed a very powerful device, sporting many of the best specs of industry standards. Despite this, there are still plenty of features in the N-one that are within the medium range of specs and the device itself suffered from some internal flaws.

When the LG GW990 was presented in the floor of CES 2010, the device opened up new limits of what we can expect from mobile phones. The new processor loaded on the device promised to be faster than anything we have seen or heard of so far and the phone’s dimensions show a radical change in common standards.

Hardware and Features

The first noticeable trait about the GW990 is the fact that the phone has a very huge touch screen. With a size of 4.8 inches diagonally, the screen promises to deliver some of the best resolution visuals seen on a mobile phone. With its 1020 x 480 pixel resolution, it certainly delivers. When the phone was demonstrated, the screen was impressively bright; hopefully that will remain the same for the final product and brightness settings can be calibrated.

The phone is also known to support HSDPA and HSUPA, which is pretty much expected from a smart phone these days. For memory, the device will have 512 MB of RAM; plenty for handling apps and even some graphic intensive games for the device.

The Core of the GW990’s Power

Nothing makes for a great phone than having a fast and responsive user interface. Lag-ish and slow user interfaces on touch screen phones makes commands feel jerky and nothing is more irritating than an unresponsive screen. This is why the CPU specs of touch screen phones are very important because more often than not, that determines how nicely the device performs.

While the LG GW990 has no specific CPU speed given, it showed many people during the 2010 CES how fast it can handle applications, media and even multi tasking. Many are comparing it to the faster ARM chips and some reports state that the new Intel Atom handles single and multi thread code without any problems and faster than ARM chips. Aside from the GW990, the Moorestown was also demonstrated on the OpenPeak tablet where it displayed the ability to handle applications that smart phones cannot.

Another great feature in this new Intel Atom processor is its power management. One of the reasons why previous Atom chips were not fit for mobile phones was because they used up too much power. The new Atom only requires a tenth of the power it originally took to run older versions.

All in the Platform

The Moblin OS for the GW990 is a Linux based platform that has been seeing plenty of activity as well as developer support –which means that the new LG phone will not be short of applications. The interface will be skinned with the LG S-Class user interface to give mobile phone users a more familiar look and feel.

Website Marketing: Google ’staked Its Ground’ With Super Bowl Ad

Google’s unprecedented decision to take out a major advert at the Super Bowl is likely to have been a strategic move to step up the battle against Microsoft Bing, website marketing specialists have suggested. The one-minute commercial aired to hundreds of thousands of American football fans on February 7th featured a simple Google search box and told a Parisian love story narrative through search queries. Google is estimated to have paid $5 million (£3.2 million) for the advertising slot. Analysts and media pundits believe that by taking advantage of one of the most high-profile – and exclusive – advertising venues in the US market, Google was effectively “staking its ground” as king of the search engines. Early last month, Google reported a year-on-year revenue growth of 17 per cent, with impressive fourth-quarter profits of $6.67 billion (£4.12bn). David Hallerman, a senior website marketing analyst for eMarketer, said Google made the move not so much to establish itself, but to take away a little market share from its competitors. “It’s a way of staking ground,” he said, adding that the Super Bowl was the perfect choice for Google to ensure it made the biggest possible impact because “the Super Bowl is a one-of-a-kind venue for advertisers.” Mr Hallerman compared the advert to Pixar’s recent box office smash Up, because it created a heartfelt picture of a relationship without audio or major on-screen action. “Bringing emotion through search queries and showing the life behind it is extremely effective advertising,” said Mr Hallerman. However, he noted that the battle of the search engines was far from over, adding that Google’s competition from Microsoft was not to be underestimated. Clint Boulton, writing for eWeek, notes that Microsoft Bing was used for 11 per cent of search engine requests in the US in January, stealing market share from Google and sinking search rival Yahoo! Google notched 65.4 per cent of US searches, down from 65.7 per cent in December. Meanwhile, Yahoo! claimed 17 per cent of the market, down from 17.3 per cent a month earlier. However, the deal that Yahoo! signed with Microsoft last July essentially places Bing in place of Yahoo! search and Yahoo!’s ad sales in place of Microsoft’s. In this arrangement, notes Mr Boulton, Microsoft in reality has a 28 per cent of the market – which poses a serious threat to Google.
