Examining Baby Boomers: Stats, Demographics, Segments, Predictions

Examining Baby Boomers: Stats, Demographics, Segments, Predictions

Baby Boomers have charged social and cultural revolutions and built vast, far-reaching corporate empires. They have helped weave the social, political and economic fabric of our country today. Their many achievements have made them one of the greatest generations of all time. Their wealth and influence is greater than any other generation today.

Born between 1946 and 1964 (46 – 64 years of age) Baby Boomers are 80 million strong. The Boomer is the largest generation, with a population nearly doubles that of Gen X. Boomers are seated at the very top of the worlds largest, most powerful companies and as established career professionals, they have tremendous buying power. In fact, approximately 70 percent of law firm partners are Baby Boomers. They will cede their positions to to their Gen X children when Boomers retire.

Defining Characteristics

Value Shifters
The 1960s is arguably one of the most defining cultural moments in 20th Century US history. Revolution was in the streets and intellect shaped social change. Value Shifters included civil rights leaders, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or Malcolm X or musical heroes, such as the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. This revolutionary spirit has not faded for Value Shifters. Value Shifters voted for Obama, were outspoken opponents of water-boarding and believe the dual wars in the Middle East are reminiscent of Vietnam.

Worker-Bees
While Gen X might work to live, the Boomer segment, Worker-Bees, live to work. Gordon Gekko, the fictional Wall Street executive, perfectly personifies the Worker-Bee. As technology brings us closer to work and each other, Worker-Bees — just as Gordon Gekko — embrace every new innovation. Think of the typical buzzing Blackberry. As work is life, Worker-Bees also define their social status and personal value with their professional achievements. Moreover, the economic crisis is putting Worker-Bees’ retirement plans on hold — as social security and their 401ks’ have shrunk.

Independent Doers
More doing, less thinking. Independent Doers thrive on action — whether it’s leading a Fortune 100 company or charging political movement or donating to charitable causes. With the you-can-do-it spirit of the 1960s, Independent Doers demonstrate leadership, confidence and courage in the face of defeat. Combined with their larger pocket books and need for action, Independent Doers contribute to many charitable causes — both financially and through volunteerism.

Competitors
With independence comes many challenges. Competitors go beyond Independent Doers and thrive on the race. For instance, Enron’s shamed leader, Jeffery Skilling was a competitor and based his life on winning — always being a step ahead of everyone else. Competitors are winners and as such, they are leaders of muli-national corporations. Competitors are also considered Helicopter Parents — who fight to pave the right path for their children, such as enrolling them in exclusive private schools.

Examining Generation X: Stats, Demographics, Segments, Predictions

Examining Generation X: Stats, Demographics, Segments, Predictions

Sergey Brin, Quentin Tarantino and Jon Stewart are among many Gen X luminaries pushing the limits, re-shaping corporate culture, re-thinking film and revolutionizing comedy. They are accelerating the speed of life and “keeping America from sucking,” writes Jeff Gordinier, author of X Saves the World: How Generation X Got the Shaft But Can Still Keep Everything From Sucking.

Generation X is an estimated 50 million strong. Most demographers agree that GenXers were born between 1964 and 1984 — putting them between the ages of 26 and 46. This generation is often referred to as “baby busters,” as they are attributed to a rapid decline in birth rates after the Baby Boomers. Moreover, Gen X is a highly educated and sophisticated group — with more than 60% of the population having attended higher education institutions.

Defining Characteristics

Each generation is defined by diverse subsets rather than a single attribute. By defining these diverse characteristics of Gen X, we are not pigeon-holing them as just pragmatic or just forward-thinkers. Instead, we are exploring the diversity of a generation that has helped shape business, culture and technology. As TwentySomething’s David Morrison writes, “my birthgroup would be hard pressed to fit on a single couch due to its sheer magnitude and unprecedented diversity.”

Pragmatics
Pragmatics are considered the byproduct of the Information Age — where data and a practical approach are essential ingredients to achieve results. Because Pragmatics understand the intricacies of media and marketing, they are sometimes considered cynical (however, not without an underlying optimism, notes Morrison).

Thrillers
Thrillers are about speed. They contributed to the rise in thrill-junky sports, such as skateboarding, skateboarding and skydiving. The X-Games, born from the Gen X grass-roots movement, has created a lasting impact on sports — with the Olympic’s adopting snowboarding as a legitimate sport.

Disenfranchised
Jeff Gordinier, 41, a disenfranchised…

3 Marketing Insights From Twitter’s New Usage Stats

twitter chirpYesterday at Twitter’s developer conference, Chirp, lots of new Twitter related news and stats were announced. One major announcement, was that the Library of Congress has acquired all of Twitter’sarchived tweets, giving the library more than a billion tweets in its archive. In addition to the Library of Congress announcement, Twitter also announced a fresh batch of usage statistics:

  • Twitter has 105,779,710 registered users
  • 300,000 new users sign up per day
  • Approximately 60% of them are coming from outside the U.S
  • Twitter receives 180 million unique visitors per month
  • 75% of Twitter traffic comes from third-party applications
  • 60% of all tweets come from third-party apps
  • Since the new Blackberry application was launched, it has accounted for 7 to 8% of new sign
  • There are 600 million search queries on Twitter per day
  • There are over 100,000 Twitter applications
  • Twitter gets 3 billion requests a day through its API
  • 37% of active Twitter users use their phone to tweet

3 Marketing Insights From Twitter’s New Usage Stats

1. Mobile Matters- With 37% of active Twitter users relying on cell phones to send and receive tweets, it is important that marketers understand that social networks are not limited to one device. Twitter is a great example of a social network that is used on desktops, smart phones and via SMS.  As a marketer it is important communicate with customers and prospects on the “screens” they use the most. This usage rate could likely increase due to the recent acquisition Twitter made of popular iPhone application Tweetie. The company plans to release the app for free instead of the current price of $2.99, which could help speed mobile adoption.

2. Marketers Need to Understand APIs
- An Application Programming Interface (API) is a set of instructions that lets a software platform communicate and work with other software. Twitter announced that more than 100,000 applications now use the Twitter API. Twitter, a company of only about 175 employees, would never have had the resources to build all of these applications itself. However, by having an API, it was able to make it easier for other people to build on its platform. As a marketer, understanding what is possible with APIs is important. APIs can let you create better online experiences for your customers, give you access to social data that can inform marketing decisions, and provide access to a built-in community of users. So many companies want to build their own social network or web application, but building a community around it can be quite costly. Using APIs of existing platforms like Twitter gives marketers access to a large built-in community of users.

3. Twitter SEO Is Important- Do you think about keywords in your tweets? You should. With 600 million searches per day on Twitter, the platform has become a major real-time search engine. As a marketer you likely pay attention to keywords on your web site, why not on Twitter? Twitter is still refining how it ranks tweets in its search results. However, the first key step is to make sure that your tweets include words that your prospective customers are searching for. While you likely know what these words are, you can also do searches of your own and see what types of words competitors are using.

Many of these new stats are impressive and offer insight into the future of social media marketing.

Do these new stats change how your business approaches Twitter?

The Value of Web Stats in SEO

Web statistics reveal information that are vital in evaluating the performance of the website. Is the website effective enough for its site visitors? Are the site visitors reaching the page they are supposed to reach? Did they reach the conversion page and eventually converted to customers?

It is not enough that a website receives site visitors. What matters is conversion. A website can be attractive but not converting. It may receive hundreds of visitors in a day but zero conversion. A website needs to perform well to be able to convert. As a web marketer, you should be able to find out how well your website is in terms of its ability to attract customers, convert visitors and generate sales. The most effective way to do this is to look at web statistics.

Web Statistics In SEO

Web statistics helps search engine optimisers determine the behaviour of the site visitors. It also reveals a lot about the browsing trends of the site visitors. By analysing the behaviour and trend of the site visitors, the optimisers will be able to identify which pages of the website need to be improved. If most of the site visitors exit through a particular page, then perhaps that page needs to be improved to pull down its exit rate.

Web statistics is also useful in determining conversion rate. How well the website is in terms of conversion? How many site visitors became customers? What contributes to the conversion and what causes the site visitors to leave without being converted? Web statistics is crucial for tracking the results of your search engine optimisation campaigns.

The data from web stats are valuable in improving the website. They will point important factors that need to be improved. Furthermore, the website”s standing on the search engines can also be determined using web statistics. Through web statistics, web marketers will be able to track the search engine visits to the website. The search engine spiders visit websites to gather information that will eventually become part of its indices.

Search engine optimisation is about optimising the website for online users and search engines. Web statistics reveal information about websites, online users and the search engines. This is the reason why web statistics is vital in search engine optimisation.

SEO and Sem Shortcuts, Spying and Stats to Dominate Google!

SEO (search engine optimization) and SEM (search engine marketing) are an online business owner’s best friend. With Google celebrating its 12th birthday and twice as many people online as there were just five years ago, there has never been a better time to make search engines work for you. That said; let’s see how you can absolutely dominate Google!

This article has three parts; Stats, Spying and Shortcuts. Each section and tip can be used alone or used together for faster results. The following information is what the SEO and SEM experts know and gives you the inside scoop on the tools they use.

Part 1; Search Engine Stats: This will give you the latest intel on search engines. This is to help you make informed decisions on how to spend your SEO time and where to spend your SEM money (search engine marketing, which includes pay per click advertising.)

A.) Google gets nearly half of all US searches performed on the Internet so you can bet that’s at the top of our SEO to do list. Here are the exact numbers as provided by the “comScore for searchenginewatch.com” survey:

42.7% Google 28.0% Yahoo! 13.2% MSN 7.60% AOL 5.90% ASK 2.60% All Others Combined

B.) Now that we know how much the search engines are used let’s get some inside information to help us plan SEO and SEM strategies. According to the UK based company Neutralize.com, users of Google versus those of MSN are just about polar opposites when it comes to natural versus paid search listings. Here’s what their research found:

Google: 72.3% of searchers prefer clicking on the natural listings that SEO helps you get. Only 27.7% prefer using the paid links you might use as part of your SEM plan.

MSN: Only 28.8% of searchers go for the natural listings while 71.2% rely on paid links. This is almost the exact opposite of how Google users work.

That is amazing information to have! You know right away that your time and effort is better spent on SEO for Google while putting your pay per click dollars into MSN is probably your best bet.

C.) Now for the biggie; return on investment (ROI.) Once again our friends at Neutralize have some great information. The following numbers show the approximate ROI that Website owners got using SEO and SEM (specifically pay per click.) for lead generation and actual sales…

Lead Generation: * 79% SEO * 75% Paid Search (SEM)

Actual Sales: * 78% SEO * 63% Paid Search (SEM)

These are huge returns on investment. In comparison, banners only account for about one third as many leads and sales.

Part 2; Spying: This will show you where and how to get the very best inside info on what all your competitors are doing and how to beat them. It’s like being handed a copy of your competitions’ online business plans. Just go to “SpyFu.com” and take a look at some of the free information they offer. Better yet, check out https://www.spyfu.com/WhyBuySpyfu.aspx to see everything you can get, free and paid. I’m a big believer in spending wisely so for most people I would recommend just spending the $6 for a 3 day full access package instead of paying for a regular subscription.

Here’s a blurb from the site that tells what SpyFu offers…”Want to know which of your competitors has the largest ad budget, or which term gets the most clicks per day? Use SpyFu’s Advanced Search to find out. Advanced Search allows one to search by all the metrics provided on the site and allows you to focus on the data that’s most important to you. What’s more, you can save your Advanced Search results to Excel with the click of a button.”

Part 3; SEO and SEM Shortcuts: “Shortcuts” does NOT mean cutting corners. Our “shortcuts” are based on finding how the professionals do it and following in their footsteps. When it comes to SEO and SEM, the best shortcuts to success involve finding the best performing and least expensive software that provides the quickest return on investment.

A.) The best SEM shortcut I know is using software to find your top keywords and otherwise help manage your pay per click campaign. Two of the most popular and widely used tools are WordTracker.com and Keyword Elite.

With WordTracker.com you pay a recurring subscription fee of $59 per month or $329 per year. I used this for a while then bought Keyword Elite (http://www.KeywordEliteWeb.com) for $175 because it appeared to do more and cost less than subscribing to WordTracker. I found it to be a better deal for my needs since there are no recurring fees and lifetime free upgrades. But it’s all about personal preference. Both products are fantastic!

B.) Picking the top SEO tool is a no brainer for me. I retired my other three products after working with SEO Elite (http://www.SEOeliteWeb.com) for just a few weeks. Although I admit I was first attracted by the small price tag of $167, it wasn’t long before I tossed the more expensive tools and just used SEO Elite. Here’s what it did, right from the start…It helped me land 121 top 5 rankings on Google within three weeks; Mostly 1’s and 2’s. It also nabbed 377 great link partners in the first 2 weeks alone, which led to even more top 10 rankings on Google. This is the same company that published Keyword Elite, which also helped me make the initial decision. They’ve been a major SEO software development player for years and the lifetime of free upgrades with zero annual costs they offer is that special touch that shows they can relate to people in the world of search engine optimization.

This information can help you dominate Google, Yahoo and MSN very quickly. Enjoy!

An SEO specialist since 1998, Mike Small got his big break in 1999 when the parent company of the Wall Street Journal hired him to optimize several of their news Websites. He began teaching SEO and SEM to east coast based marketing agencies in 2001 and still offers free SEO and SEM advice on his blog http://www.SEOpartner.com .
