Matt Cutt of Google Addresses Keyword Spam
Matt Cutt of Google Addresses Keyword Spam
Web Designers do not need to learn about SEO to make it easier for Google to index a website. Many web design firms use Google’s free tools to optimize a website for small business clients.
Matt Cutts made a ten-minute keynote speech in 2008, at a Web 2.0 conference, called “What Google Knows About Spam.” This is a constant struggle for web design firms. SEO wants a website with balanced content. Small businesses want content that sells their product. Google doesn’t want to see anything that reflects spam. The video is available on his blog. It is an eye opening look into SEO and how hard Google hits spam. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/what-google-knows-about-spam/ I refer to this one, because it is easy for a non-SEO pro to understand. Most web design firms, and web design professionals spend very little time learning SEO techniques.
Matt Cutts has worked for Google for 8 years. He wrote hundreds of articles on search engine placement and the dangers of spam. Most web designers are unaware that Google uses 128 different elements to rank, or penalize, a page. Most web designers focus on linking and ignore the rest.
Black hat SEO is nothing new. Keyword Spam is nothing new. Web designer and black-hat SEO services have always used keywords with no relevance on a website. These spam pages are now easy for search engines to recognize. They use script-generated content, are full of spelling mistakes, and keyword phrases. Or, the meta tags are not reflected in the content. Keyword text spam is often blended with the background, invisible on browsers, but picked up by search engines. One common trick is to make 1 index page for search engines, and 1 for the website.
Matt’s reminds web designers that Google has a tool to help become relisted if you inadvertently make a mistake: google.com/web designers/. Any Web designer should register their website with this tool as soon as it goes live. If Google notices the website has been hacked, or the web designer, or small business, hired an unscrupulous SEO firm, then a notice is sent to the webmaster, and hopefully, the web designer. This addresses the situation before the web designer’s site is banned.
One of the most common complaints is that DIY web designers who follow all the rules, and their website are still excluded from indexing and Google’s rank. Cutts warns people that the secret to success is to write for people, not search engines, not for ad copy, and to make sure that you have a keyword density below 4%, and a keyword weight above 70%. This is not always possible, but it should be attempted. It is also important to run a website through a ‘search engine view’ SEO tool, to make sure that the keywords designated by the small business, are recognized by the search engine. In fact, it is common for search engines to consider Home and AboutUS as the primary keywords for a website.
Cutts says, new material falls into the common-sense category. It’s all about your small business. “If I’m a plumber in Iowa, I may want to write about some of the strange things that happen to me on the job, or the five most common ways to fix a toilet,” he says. “That kind of content can get really popular, and it’s a great way to get links.” Folks will post your piece on one of the social media sites. And with links comes higher Google rankings. (source: USAToday)
Here are a few tips to avoid problems.
Do not:
* build more than 50 inbound links to a website in one week
* pay for links
* put paid links on your website
* stack keywords
* Let Keyword Density exceed 4%
* Have a Keyword Weight less than 60%
* Use more than 75 links on a page including menus
* make sure you do not clone your web-pages
* Use doorway pages
* Use font the same color as the background
* Stack web pages with typos
* Clone pages
* Post a lot of reviews unless you use <no follow> codes
These should help protect your website from being banned and penalized. If the website/blog is already penalized, then fix the above problems. Sign into your Google Account and look on the right side of the dashboard. There is a ‘reconsideration’ link. Complete it, and then hopefully, Google will re-index the website and return the website’s page rank.
These tips are designed to help small business owners find a reputable web design firm who understands the balance between SEO design and web design techniques. Both are important if you want to rank on Google.

Twitter Spam Declines…Or Does It?
Twitter would like you to know that the percentage of spam on its network is down—way down.

Of course, Twitter attributes this decline to its efforts to combat spammy tweets, but there are two other explanations to consider.
1. Notice the chart shows percentage of spam, not actually numbers. Could it be that actual spam tweets are on the rise, but the percentage is down due to an even faster growth of legitimate users? I’d love to see the actual numbers.
2. When a network plateaus are the spammers the first to show signs of fatigue? Is this decline a sign that Twitter users are simply not engaging as much these days–even with spammers?

Now Available in Real Time: Spam!
Yep, now you can have spam delivered in real time to your search results on Google or Twitter. This is just why we all clapped for joy when Bing and Google hooked up with Twitter for real time results, isn’t it?
Oh, no? Hm. I guess we’re not the only ones. Search Engine Roundtable noted a Webmaster World forum thread complaining about the spam in real time search results. In the SER poll, 78% (as of the time of this screenshot) felt the real time results in Google are either somewhat or very spammy:

However, this may just be their perceptions: it may be less that the results themselves are spam and more than they’re merely unwanted, and therefore we consider them spam (like commercial emails that we really did sign up for but really don’t want to get anymore—except we didn’t get the choice to sign up for this addition to the SERPs).
Twitter, meanwhile, is doing what it can about spam on its site. The “trust and safety” unit at the company now employs 22 people, making it the largest division at the company. But it’s not just the blatant tag spam and mock-celebrity accounts they’re looking at. According to Ad Age:
The dirty secret of Twitter’s war on spam? A significant amount of it emanates from clumsy marketers that just don’t know any better.
So what do they flag as spam? They have automatic filters to catch accounts that follow a large number of Tweeple, unfollow them all, and then add more followers. (Follower spam.) They also have recently set up technology to filter links and check for phishing attempts. The team also handles hacking attacks and copyright/brand claims.
But even legit accounts can devolve into spammy practices, like keyword-based autoreplies. The rule of thumb? “[E]ngage the people you are trying to sell stuff to. If you are creating a dialogue with people and not just touting things because you want to make a buck, you are going to have a network of people that value your input,” says the trust & safety unit director Del Harvey. She says they’re constantly working on algorithmic improvements to catch more spammers and reduce false positives—sound familiar?
What do you think? Is Twitter doing enough to reduce spam—including the spam that filters into Google search results? Do you think Google’s real time results are spammy—or just unwanted?

Differences Between Effective Internet Marketing And Spam
Savvy business owners who take advantage of Internet marketing realize there is a fine line between marketing and spam and orchestrate their marketing campaigns to gain the maximum amount of exposure without running the risk of being viewed as spam. The definition of spam is open to interpretation but most people agree on the fact that spam is equivalent to junk mail you receive at your residence. In general spam is unsolicited emails which are part of an advertising campaign. The term spam can also apply to message board postings which are posted solely for advertising purposes. This article will examine the differences between effective Internet marketing and spam.First we will consider the use of message boards for the purpose of Internet marketing. Message boards are essentially online meetings places for Internet users who share a particular interest to exchange idea, ask or answer questions or just socialize. These message boards allow users to register and post messages. Most message boards have asset of guidelines which the users must follow when making posts. These guidelines may vary widely with some being very strict about acceptable content and others not being nearly as strict. For more information logon to www.the-forum-list.com.It is important to follow these guidelines because failure to do so may result in the moderators deleting your account and other members not paying much attention to your posts.Message boards are ideal for Internet marketing because they can provide a business owner with access to a specialized target audience. If you are in the business for finding jobs for employees who wish to telecommute, you might join a message board dedicated to working from home to find members who may be interested in your products. Here you may learn a great deal about the concerns of your target audience. You can also take the opportunity to post links to your website when appropriate and in accordance with the message board guidelines. This is considered to be smart Internet marketing. However, if you opt to respond to each and every post with a link to your website even when it is not relevant and do not offer comments of value to other members, they are likely to view your posts as spam. This can be damaging because these members may opt to avoid your website even if they have a need for your services.E-newsletters and email advertising are one area of Internet marketing which is most likely to be viewed as spam if not done properly. Most Internet users to not appreciate unsolicited emails especially when these emails do not pertain to a subject that interests them. This is often the case when business owners buy email lists and send their advertisements to everyone on the list. For more information logon to the www.freeearningtips.com. This is not effective because you are not likely to reach a large population of your target audience. Additionally, recipients of the email may block your email address so future communications are automatically sent to a spam folder. Some recipients may even report you to their Internet service provider who may investigate the claim that you are a spammer. A better way to approach the concept of email marketing is to only send e-newsletters and advertisements to past customers who have specifically asked to receive such emails and potential customers who have requested additional information.

Windshield Repair Owns Google, Google Will Find Out About All Your Clones, Is It Spamming If No One Finds Out? Huh, Google, Is This The Ultimate Spam?
He is so addicted to windshield repair he won’t sleep, until every one knows the truth about Google search: Houston windshield repair on the Internet. How many cloned sites are you working against. Its OK to have as many sites for the same thing, but how about sites that the only thing different is (home page with only 1 word) I think its spamming Google. I need to advertise in and around Houston for me and other companies in the glass business. I want to be the information highway for local merchants and get more costumers for my business at the same time. So far I’m getting a lot of business for other people that simply don’t have a chance against the web design firms. I am 3 months old on the Internet I learn real fast. Soon I will unleash my secret weapon, I call it the new glass network. It is made up of so many merchants all with duel web sites. And every one will work together to get every one more business. People that aren’t Internet savvy will have web sites for free and I will make sure that all sites point to one another, cause we will be known as the sharing company. Do unto others as you would like done to you community.
The only way to be on top of a popular google Internet search for windshield repair in Houston is to create a bunch of stupid sites, not good ones. Good ones take to much time and a lot of content. Most of the sites for Houston windshield repair on Google don’t have much more than a paragraph on the entire web site. Those sites are cheating or spamming Google. Here’s an example I found 20 to 30 websites all the same with different names on the home page. At the bottom of the page all windshield repair sites were listed each one pointing to each other. They were all on different domain names. So they are all pointing one way too 2 different sites in Houston with certain key words. And that’s why Google bot has put them on the top. I checked around and found out if you want to be on top for Houston or any other city on Google the owners or web design firm charges you by the month to point the links from their sites to yours, then your on the top. So I guess google bot can’t really rate a site on content because there are too many cheaters out there that are smarter than google. The only way I found these sites was late one night, I guess that’s when know one is watching. Out smarting Google search: Houston windshield repair.

How Google Filters Spam
Online users use Google for research purposes. Google provides pertinent information related to a search query entered by the online user. As much as possible, Google wants to provide its users with quality content alone. Because of this, it abhors low quality and spammy websites.
Google has come up with various spam filters to get rid of websites that aim to spam its ranking algorithm. What are the Google Spam Filters?

Is The New “jesus; All About Life” Christian Spam In The Us As Well Or Is It Only In Australia?
I’ve noticed that just about every church in Sydney has this new marketing strategy advertised out the front. It’s a banner with “Jesus” in big letters and then the phrase, “All about life” after it. There has also been TV advertising. It directs people to a website where they can post in a picture and a short Twitter style message and thank this “Jesus” for whatever they want. Christian spam.

Link Spam – The Seedy Underbelly of Web Marketing
Link popularity has been the main technique for search engine marketers for at least the last few years. Some marketers have become so obsessed with link popularity that they have resorted to automated techniques to help them acquire one-way links. Some examples of link spam methods that are still being exploited are:
Guestbooks – In a woebegone era people placed simple scripts on their websites, with the hopes of getting feedback from their visitors. A great number of these scripts are still in existence. A web spammer will identify a guestbook because of its’ footprint. Millions of these guestbooks have been abandoned and are not monitored by their owners. For this reason, automated guestbook spamming has been rampant. An interesting thing about Guestbook spam: some of them can even be spammed too death. Since many of these are old CGI scripts, they can’t handle the volume of spam messages, and end up crashing. At that point the Guestbook will live on until the domain owner removes it.
Blogs – blogs became even more popular than guestbooks. they’ve been installed by the millions and abandoned at 90% rate. Blog software prior to 2005 had a default setting which allowed comments to be published without prior approval. It also allowed live html, so these blogs are out there still begging to be spammed and many are each day. What ends up happening is they get so many outgoing links that the page becomes a massive size, and at some point the page may even have trouble loading.
Forums – a frequent victim of webspam. Since almost all forums allow users to submit material without pre-moderation, web-spammers will attempt to post to them. The good news about Forums is that are usually not abandoned like Blogs or Guestbooks, and usually someone will come along and clean up the mess. This isn’t always true, but it does happen quite a bit.
Any form on the internet that allows html is vulnerable to webspam attack. Without some sort of moderation it’s impossible to ensure that malevolent html will not be inserted. if you don’t pre-moderate the form, make sure you receive email notifications whenever the form is submitted. If you don’t at least check the form often, it’s inevitable that you’ll be spammed by one of the numerous bots on spam duty.
Search engines introduced the rel nofollow tag in order to deal with the rising tide of link spam. All popular blog software comes with the nofollow in place, so the main risk of Webspam is to legacy blogs installed prior to 2005. Nofollow essentially tells the search engine that the link is untrusted. In essence it says this link was entered by a person other than the website owner, so treat it with a grain of salt. Forum software makers have also been quick to add nofollow to their core technology. The fact of the introduction of nofollow gives great insight into how much trouble search engines were having with the enormous load of link spam. Basically they threw their hands up and admitted defeat. Nofollow has had an enormous impact on Webspam, but there are still an awful lot of blogs and forums out there that haven’t been patched.
Link spam appeals to certain web marketers for obvious reasons. It’s a scalable and free solution to building link popularity. Web marketers who automate the process can quickly vary their anchor text between ‘runs’. This will give them a wide variety of links from a broad spectrum of websites located on diverse IP addresses. This is normally a sure-fire recipe for success for virtually any website. By simulating the link popularity of a popular website, the link spammer is able to fool the search engines into assigning it higher rankings. The manipulation of link popularity has become a major issue to all of the search engines. Each will offer more and more attempts at reducing this threat, but unless search engine rankings are based only on on-page variables, it will always exist.
