The Secret to Internet Marketing? Learn the Ten Skills You Must Have

There are a lot of folks out there that will tell you how to make money on the internet. My advice? Don’t listen to them. Especially not ALL of them!
A little background. In 2006 I knew nothing about sales by means of the internet. I tried to get right into it but my inability to know what to do or not to do invariably stopped me cold…after losing some money.
I sort of knew what I wanted to do even though I had never done it. I wanted to sell downloadable information ebooks. I had already bought some and saw how that went and I just liked the sales process…and I still do.
And I wanted it to be automated.
One of the reasons that selling info products is so attractive to me is because I was in the furniture business for 30 years. I had grown tired of warehouses full of physical inventory. The internet looked good!
But I wasn’t ready. I didn’t know what to do. And, if I knew what to do I didn’t know how to do it. I had to get past that stumbling block. And if you are anything like I was when this first caught my eye…you aren’t ready, either.
So what do you need to know to make your way in Internet Marketing (IM)? I’m going to list ten specific skills that that seem absolutely necessary if you want to do this.
By the way, you haven’t been told this before. These ten “things” are not skills that you have to be an expert in. You just need to know your way around in it. That’s one of the keys to getting rid of that whole overwhelmed feeling that nails us all at times. Good enough is good enough and perfect is impossible. Just do it!
The first thing you have to become at ease with is the terminology of the business. I found a good online internet marketing school and put myself in there! I studied and learned and I think that had a lot to do with my sticking with it after my horrible start. (If you search article directories for Riley West as author you can laugh at my horrible start. Type in “How to Get a Good Start in Internet Marketing.”)
The second thing you have to learn is how to put up a simple one page website. Don’t panic! It’s easy. Once I got over being intimidated by the thought I just got into it and banged one out. The first website I made was pretty bad. The second a little better. Now I have done 40 or 50 and my sites work just fine. I keep them simple. Actually, I don’t know how to make them complicated.
Using a webpage editor isn’t much more difficult than a word processor is to learn. You’ll see how it’s sort of the same thing. Just do it! You’ll be proud of yourself.
The third thing you need to have is a domain name and hosting. That’s simple too! Your domain name is your website internet address (URL) and your hosting company is the outfit that puts your files on their servers that are hooked up to the net.
Fourth, the autoresponder. Sounds odd but isn’t. All marketers use them and it seems that most use an outfit called Aweber. This ingenious software allows you to stay in communication with your website visitors by email and increases the odds of you making a sale by quite a bit! It’s a known statistic that the average sale is made on the 7th or 8th contact.
So, if you want to be way below average in sales just DON”T use an autoresponder! Without an autoresponder you’ll only make one contact and you won’t have their name! Automatic followup. Very effective and easy too…once you have worked through it.
The fifth item necessary for success in IM is a keyword tool. Use Googles keyword tool. It’s FREE, it’s easy to use and it has excellent tutorials. Google is a huge company on the net and they have many things for you, most of which are FREE! Try to beat that. Get familiar with Google. You’ll be glad you did. Another thing I recommend is Google Analytics, also free. But that would make eleven and this is the “ten” list.
Sixth skill to acquire – Traffic Generation. It’s absolutely critical. If you have the best website in the world it won’t sell a thing unless somebody comes to it. But not just anybody. You want “targeted traffic.”
Here’s the example I like. If you are selling tires you want people with bald tires to see your offer!
The internet allows us to drive the correct traffic to our websites. That would be people who want to buy what you have to sell. There are dozens of ways to drive targeted traffic to the right offers…you just have to study traffic generation for a while. Then, pick a method to concentrate on. Stick with it until it works. They all work, you just have to get it right.
The seventh thing you’ll want is a way for people to buy something from you. I mean pay for it. Give you money! There are many ways. A simple way is Paypal. It’s what I use. Just open an account. It’s FREE! They charge you a little transaction fee per sale. They handle it all. Just TRY making money online without being able to get paid!
I think for number eight we should start a blog. You can use Blogger or Wordpress.org, since they are free, but I recommend against it. If you don’t have your blog hosted on your own account then you don’t have full control. Get this… Wordpress.org doesn’t allow affiliate links or selling! And we are Marketers! So, remember, wordpress.com hosted on your own hosting company is the way you want to go. You’re in charge.
Blogs can be low maintenance traffic generators! When you write about your topic (say Internet Marketing) your post becomes eligible for the SERP’s (Search Engine Page Results) when someone types in “Internet Marketing.”
Google spiders like blogs. I do too! So my setup is that my main site is a wordpress blog hosted by a company I chose. My blog is surrounded by salespage websites with links to the posts. An elegant solution. Try it!
It looks a little like a solar system. The Blog is in the middle and the salespages are the satellites.
The ninth skill you’ll need is FTP. File Transfer Protocol. Don’t panic. It’s easy. At first I uploaded files to my site by hand, one at a time, the hard way because I knew how to do that. Don’t even bother learning the hard way. Use FTP. By the way, the one file at a time by hand method is very cool when you want to make a small change on one page. I can correct a typo in 2 minutes. I just go right in there and correct it.
There are two very good FTP programs that are FREE! You cannot beat that price. Cyberduck or Filezilla. My guess is that when they are free you can call them anything you want!
The tenth thing I think you need for a simple start to this business is a course of easy lessons that are designed to bring you from totally new to making money. I know…lots of people say they can give you this. I have only found two and I looked long and hard.
These are the ten things I did. These skills made it possible for me to set up money making info-websites and a blog. I could have done better, though. I spent too much time studying and not enough time settling down and sticking with one thing.
That’s what I’m doing now. I’m sticking with it. I’m moving it forward every day. My goal is to have my little operation making enough money on a regular basis that I can hire an assistant. There’s my goal. What’s yours?
You can do it! – Here’s to your success.

How To Promote Off Line Businesses Using Your Online Marketing Skills

There is a big market available for people to use their online marketing skills and, for a fee, promote traditional off line businesses. This article will look at the many reasons why you can promote off line businesses using your online marketing skills.

1. Many off line businesses are struggling with marketing at the present time. Some of the traditional methods of off line promotion are not working as well as they did in the past.

A good example of this is the Yellow Pages which are no where near as effective for advertising as they used to be. In the past, people used to routinely look in the Yellow Pages to find a business that they needed, but it is becoming less used over time.

In this day and age, many people will use the local search function on their favorite search engine to find a business they are looking for. Nowadays, if an off line business does not have an online presence, they will be losing out on plenty of business as a result.

I’m sure that you can now understand the potential to help off line businesses gain an Internet presence by using your online marketing skills? This scenario presents a winning situation for the off line business, for yourself and the business’s customers.

2. Keep in mind that off line business owners are usually extremely busy and know very little about Internet marketing. If you look at a lot of their websites, their lack of online knowledge will become immediately apparent. This is where your online marketing skills will come into play.

If you take a closer look at these websites, you will notice that many don’t even have proper meta tags in place. You will also observe that many of these sites have a poor layout.

You can make a lot of money simply by cleaning up and optimizing those poorly put together websites. Once the visitors find it easier to navigate about the website, their first impression of the business will be much better.

3. If you notice that the online business you are working for doesn’t use a lead capture form on their various pages, then you can certainly build this in for them. Most offline businesses that have made their own websites are wasting daily traffic as they are not capturing the contact information of their prospects.

You could likely earn a full time living using your online marketing skills by just placing lead capture pages on all of the business websites that don’t currently have them. After you upload the lead capture pages, you can continue to earn more revenue by building email follow up series for each of these off line business’s autoresponders.

So you see, your online marketing skills are very much required by off line businesses as they really don’t know how to accomplish this on their own. Some of these business owners may have some Internet marketing experience, however, they are usually too busy to set things up on their own. These business owners will gladly pay you for your expertise.

Online Marketing Survival Skills for the MLMer

We’ve all heard stories about the teenage kid who builds an online marketing empire. Overnight. In his bedroom. In between playing XBox 360 and doing his homework. Or the network marketer who builds a massive organization from zero in just 90 days using the internet. (Funny they never say HOW they did it…they just “showed the plan” more). Like other eager beavers, I entered online marketing with visions of massive opt-in lists in just 30 days…generated for free! It didn’t happen quite that way.
Your web presence builds if you keep at it. Online marketing is absolutely the best way to build your network marketing business for the long term. Not everybody wants to do the old “warm market” thing. Not everyone has a Rolodex of contacts. Marketing MLM online levels the playing field.
Here are a few things I learned in navigating the online marketing jungle.
When it comes to marketing online, remember that the ‘net is like a river. Go with the flow. Things change. HOW you get the word out will change. Bet on it, and don’t get locked into any one method. Some folks use off line advertising and use their website or system just for presenting and training. Others prospect online exclusively. Most do a combination of the two.
Outsourcing (paying someone else) may be very wise. Almost every type of online marketing can be outsourced. Buying leads is a form of outsourcing.
There are some things, like article marketing, blogging, and forums that keep your link alive for years. You can pay to have others write your articles and blog entries – some go as cheap as $8/article. You still have full copyright privileges.
Things like social networking (thousands of sites for that) are basically the same kind of prospecting and meeting people online that you do offline. The only downside to some of these sites, is that it’s you and a zillion other network marketers fishing in the same spot. The communication can devolve into trading opportunity pitches. Still there are hundreds of thousands of forums. Find one you enjoy. Share. Participate. Build relationships and trust. Your customer and distributor base will grow.
Most MLM companies offer replicating websites for their distributors. Most are poorly designed, difficult to navigate and don’t have capture forms. In short, I wouldn’t market my MLM replicating site. Instead I would build a capture or landing page for that replicating site.
What about SEO? Most network marketers rely on replicating sites athat aren’t indexed by the major search engines. Yes, page 1 of Google is the most important piece of real estate in the world for your keyword. Absolutely. So if you can build a good site and get a handle on SEO or pay big bucks to a webmaster, go for it. The key in MLM is duplication. I personally don’t think that teaching SEO to my team is duplicatable. I know several successful online marketers that don’t even rely on SEO as a primary means of driving traffic to their sites. They do some, but it’s not their main focus.
I don’t build my own websites. HTML code fries my little brain. I do build capture pages, blogs and my Squidoo page. Building websites is too time consuming for me. I use replicated marketing systems that handle all of those website details for me. I give up control of content for ease of use and freeing up my time for prospecting.
The name of the game, no matter what you do is this: Build the biggest opt-in list you can. PERIOD. Drive as many of those as you can, on your list to the website of your choice. It is the website’s job to convert that traffic into customers or distributors. That’s it in a nutshell.
The good news is that there are lots and lots of ways to get traffic to your sites. The “bad news” is there is not a universal starting point for everyone. Here are some things you can do, in no specific order. For best results, do as many as you can manage.
1) Article marketing
2) Blogging
3) Social Networking
4) Newspaper ads and other offline advertsing
5) Business cards
6) Email marketing (this is the opt-in list)
7) Calling people on the phone
8) PPC (pay-per-click- VERY competitive and $$ if you use Google or Yahoo) but there are other search engines
9) Link exchange
10) Forums
11) Safelists – these come in a variety of forms
12) Traffic exchanges (better for capture pages and freebies like free reports)
13) Decals on your car
14) Buying targeted leads
15) Link submitters (some are good, some are bad).
Note: some directories like DMOZ won’t take ANY network marketing sites or anything related to MLM or any MLM distributor…probably a way around that.
16) Offering a free report in exchange for contact info
17) Even a T-shirt or baseball cap with your URL on it!
18) Viral marketing- someone loves what you do and tells the world about it.
OK where do you start??? Pick just one technique and learn it. Offline advertising directed to your capture page is probably the easiest. Then join a couple of networking sites and forums. Learn to master one technique and then add another. Then another. Pretty soon you will have several avenues that are driving traffic to your sites, and yes, the search engines will pick up your site. Just start somewhere!!!!!

Offline Gold for Online Marketers – How to Sell your Online Marketing Skills

During the new year holidays, I stumbled upon an interesting post written by Andrew Cavanagh in the Warrior Forum. The post is about how to make money by selling your online marketing skills to businesses right in you local city. This post went completely insane with thousands of views almost immediately and all kinds of positive comments.

Andrew who has over 25 years of experience in developing small businesses also written a 50-page report called “Offline Gold For Online Marketers”. and sales. When I saw his new report, I grabbed it immediately not because of its introductory low price ($19.99) but the idea of selling our online marketing skills or services offline.

The idea of offline marketing is consistent with my thinking. Like I mentioned in my website before, most online marketers are glue to their PC all the time but there are a few smart ones who also spend their time doing networking offline. Because these people know that there are gold mines in the offline world. But, the question is… how do you promote and sell your online marketing skills offline?

If you’ve experience in building a small business before, perhaps you know that the average business owner is very busy just trying to keep his business running. He doesn’t have the time to take a long hard objective look at the way he could improve his marketing strategy. But he is also acutely aware that anything that can improve his net profits will help to keep his business more stable and put real cash in his pocket! Most small business owners are well aware that they can always find time for someone who’s genuinely interested in helping them to improve their businesses and they’re willing to pay for it.

Now if you’ve some basic online marketing skills and are willing to walk into a business and just have a casual conversation about how they can improve their sales using the Internet, a good percentage of them will listen. Of course, besides having some basic online marketing skills, you also need to learn how to talk to these business owners and understand their NEEDS. That’s why I find the report “Offline Gold For Online Marketers” so valuable because it outlines step-by-step how to approach small business owners so they want to listen to you and how to sell your services to them.

Here are some tips on where to find those small business owners and how to communicate with them…

I’m sure you’ve heard about Business Networking International (BNI). If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s basically a business and professional networking organization whose purpose is to provide a structured environment for the development and exchange of qualified business referrals. It’s the largest networking organisation of its kind in the world. I’m sure you can find them in your city.

They hold regular meeting for their members and if you know someone there, you can ask him/her to invite to join their meeting (for free). It’s a great avenue for you to get to know other entrepreneurs from different fields. Make sure you bring a lot of business cards if you attend one of their gatherings.

Just get to know people and have a casual conversation with them. My favorite technique to communicate with small business owners is to always remember to ask questions! For example, let’s say he/she asks you first, “what do you do for a living?”. My normal answer for that question is… “I have a home-based Internet business. How about you?”. Always remember to end your answer with a question. You need to get to know about your potential client and a great way to do this is to talk less and listen more (ie. ask more questions).

Ask them if their businesses currently have a website? Most of them don’t. For those who have websites, they have no idea what is online marketing and they have never made any sale from their websites. You must always in a position to gather information and seek the opportunity to talk about your services. Remember not to talk too much about yourself. Focus on your potential client. it’s enough to say that you have a home-based internet business and you also help small business owners to improve their businesses through online marketing. Ask them this question: “Do you think your business will do better if you have a website?”. Then LISTEN!

I hope this article has given you some great ideas on how to sell your online marketing skills offline. Click here to find out more about “Offline Gold For Online Marketers”.

Losing your Social Skills? : Online Marketing Business and Technology Uh-ohs

Starting, growing, and maintaining an online marketing business is something billions of people worldwide are trying to do as one of the ways to stay hip with technology. If you don’t have a PC, notebook, ipod, Utube video, Facebook profile, MP3 player, and the whole shebang, you are just not with the program.

I guess that means I’m out of it, even though I am an online marketing business owner, because I only own a PC, and don’t even have a cell phone or text messaging. In fact, text messaging has become my number one pet peeve lately, with the cell phone being a close second.

People love cells and text messaging to the point that the person they are with in the current moment is less important than checking for, or writing messages to someone else! Uh-oh! There’s no better way to make someone feel like an object rather than a person than to tune her out in favor of that cell or text message.

Trust me folks, this is not a handy social skill in your personal life, or your online marketing business life! Are you losing it because of technology? If you are trying to win over new prospects and customers, you better not be thinking your incoming cell or text message is more important than who you are with!

This is a sure way to lose business if you are not giving your potential customers 100% of your attention when trying to make a deal, sign up a new member, or just get someone’s feet wet with your online marketing business programs and services.

If you think this is petty information from an opinionated online marketing business owner, then think again! Do you remember being a kid and watching TV with someone, and asking a burning question only to be told, “Shhhh! I’m watching this!” or “Shhhh! I want to hear this”? How did that make you feel?

It probably made you feel less important than a piddly piece of technology! If you run a business, you can’t afford to let it zap you of your social skills. Yes, you have to spend time working on the PC or notebook to get your work done. But you can’t expect to run a healthy online marketing business when you shut out the rest of the real world and real people in it!

Have you ever gone out for a nice dinner and the person you’re with pulls out their text messaging? How embarrassing is that!? As your potential customer, that tells me that you are an online marketing business owner who finds me boring, and you don’t care, or think I am at all important compared to the technology you have to attend to. Uh-oh!

Now you may think that communicating online in discussion forums, chat rooms, MSN, and this whole cell phone and text messaging thing is still interacting with others. But wait a minute! You are still losing an essential component of human interaction here!

The human brain is capable of sending a piece of written text over the phone, but only when you are face-to-face with someone and in their presence, can the human brain release neurons that feel what the other person is feeling, sense what they are sensing. You only get a gist of this online.

Empathy is something we can all have but it’s developed by being with people, not by having a relationship with your computer. If you know that human relationships are the essence of all our online marketing businesses, then you will realize the importance of in-person contact with others.

The point of this article is to make you aware that your online marketing business and other techno-gadgets of this new techno-internet age may be ruining your social skills. These skills are so important in building our business and personal relationships.

Remember that your online marketing business is about relationships, not about technology. If you have well developed social skills by being around other people, your business will attract more customers.
