The annual German Shepherd Dog “Sieger” Show held in Germany every year is a spectacular event. The finest German Shepherds from Germany and also from many other countries are exhibited.  The title “Sieger” is awarded to the top, adult male and the title ”Siegerin” to the best female.

This event, that takes place annually in various cities Germany, is held in a huge sports stadium, often a soccer stadium. It attracts thousands of dedicated enthusiasts from all over the world – China, Australia, India, South Africa, Russia, and in fact every country of the world where the German Shepherd Dog is bred.

This year it was held in Ulm at the Donau Sport Stadium and it was it was extremely well organized affair.

I have been attending these “Sieger” Shows since the 1970”s and this was one of the most enjoyable Sieger shows I have attended. One of the reasons was because the weatherin Ulm  on this occasions was absolutely ideal.  Another reason was because the  hotel at which my wife and I stayed, the Maritim, is conveniently located within walking distance of the Show, making it very easy to attend every day.

Over the years I have seen a remarkable improvement in the quality of the dogs being exhibited. There is no doubt that top German Shepherd Dog show winners today are more strikingly handsome, athletic animals than they have ever been. They are so uniform in appearance that judges, for the most part, are only able to separate them by paying attention to minor faults in construction.

The “Sieger” this year, “Vegas du Haut Mansard”, a dog that also won the title last year, was a worthy winner. He is an absolute superb specimen.  His spectacular, ground-covering gait and effortless movement impressed the huge, enthusiastic crowd.

An impressive feature of “Vegas” was his strong temperament that he demonstrated in the “test of courage” that all adult dogs are obliged to pass before being considered for high honors.

In this “test of courage” all the dogs exhibited at the Show, in the adult class are threatened, individually, with a stick by an “assailant”, suitably protected with a padded arm and protective clothing.  If the dogs show any hesitation or nervousness they fail and are placed in a very low position.

An unfortunate feature of this Sieger Show was that there was an unusually high number of dogs that failed this test.

The German Shepherd Dog, not so long ago, had a reputation of being a breed of dog, not only beautiful in appearance, but also an excellent guard dog with a very strong protective instinct.

Unfortunately however, in recent years many breeders appear to have concentrated too much on breeding a beautiful animal with a spectacular ground-covering gait and neglected temperament.

Many German Shepherd Dogs today appear to have lost the natural, in-born, protective instinct that was once a highly regarded feature of the breed. There are far too many German Shepherd Dogs that are of no value as guard dogs.

A German Shepherd Dog with a strong, protective nature must not be confused with and over-aggressive animal. This type of temperament is frequently the result of timidity and nervousness, rather than bold, self-confidence.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL TEMPERAMENT FOR A GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG.

Ideally, a German Shepherd Dog should be an extremely self-assured animal, a loyal companion, devoted to family members, excellent with children, approachable and tolerant of strangers, but with a natural ability to discriminate between friend and foe and an instinctive ability to immediately recognize danger when it appears.

With appropriate training a dog with this temperament can be easily trained to respond to dangers than threaten members of the family.

It is also an unfortunate fact that in recent years, quite a large number of dogs entered in the annual “Sieger” Shows in Germany, failed to pass the “test of courage” which is an important feature of the Sieger Show.

At the 2007 “Sieger” Show, there were no less than 47 whose performances in this “test of courage” was not of a very high standard.

Last year, in 2008, the figure was somewhat better as there were only 36 who failed. This does show some improvement. It is disappointing to note however, that many of these animals, who failed, came from the very best show winning bloodlines in Germany.

This year, in 2009, the situation was considerably worse. Of the 350 males entered in the Open class there were no less than 63 that failed the “test of courage”.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION?

It is clear that if there is to be an improvement in the natural, inborn protective instinct of the German Shepherd Dog, breeders must pay more attention to breeding from animals with strong temperaments. They should concentrate on animals that have performed particularly well in the test of courage at Sieger shows and make use of these bloodlines.

What to expect at this year’s show (2011 CES)

It’s that time of year again.

In a few short days gadget makers, buyers, sellers, and those of us that pay very close attention to the industry, will be colonizing Las Vegas to see what sort of tech wonders await us for the coming year at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show.

When asking the people who spend every January schlepping between the massive Las Vegas Convention Center and other points along the Strip what to expect at this year’s show, most will tell you they expect this year’s show to be more “evolutionary” in nature. In other words, from the information we have available to us right now, there won’t be one scene-stealing or breakthrough technology this year, like 3D or HDTV, or the Palm Pre in years past.

But that doesn’t equate to a boring event by any means. When the biggest tech trade show in the world kicks off on Wednesday evening, it’s going to be with products that we know and love–tablets, Internet-connected TVs, Android phones, and the requisite robots–but they’ll be better, faster, and there will be more of them.

It’s going to be tablet madness at CES 2011. There are more than a dozen manufacturers expected to jump on the iPad-alternative bandwagon.

There is also a fair bit of suspense hanging over this year’s show. The most anticipated moment of CES for now is what Verizon will do with its moment in the spotlight. Rumors of a Verizon iPhone have been circulating for what seems like years now. And Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg has the all-important opening day keynote on Thursday, where he is expected to talk about his shiny new 4G network.

To be clear, it’s not very likely he’ll whip out an iPhone that runs on his network–that’s not Apple’s style to allow another company to make major product announcements on its behalf. Perhaps Steve Jobs will make his own announcement right before the show? We don’t know, but it certainly is creating something to look forward to before opening night.

Tablet-pallooza
Unless you’ve sequestered yourself in a place with no Internet or TV, you’re likely aware that this year’s show is going to be all about tablets. Tablets, tablets, tablets–get used to reading that now because you’re going to see and hear it repeated all week long. The devices we’ll see will be from competitors gleefully gunning for Apple’s iPad: slate-style touchscreens that are very app friendly.

Apple has the clear early-mover advantage in this market–some might even say it invented the touch-screen slate category–and many consumer electronics and PC manufacturers are salivating at the thought of getting their customers to pay 0 or more for yet another device that is not a smartphone or a laptop.

The vast majority of these will be Android tablets. Google has been busy readying Android 3.0, or Honeycomb, which is optimized for tablet use, rather than smartphones. The list of manufacturers expected to feast on Honeycomb and debut their tablet is rather long, and includes both large and small players: Acer, Archos, Asus, Creative, Dell, Entourage, Fusion Garage, LG, Motorola, MSI, Notion Ink, Samsung, Toshiba, and ViewSonic.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will use his traditional keynote the night before the show floor opens to talk updates to Windows Phone 7, perhaps give us a very early peek at Windows 8 but mostly to talk up slates and tablet PCs. Granted those slates are not like Android tablets or iPads. Instead, these will likely be featuring Windows 7. And in keeping with the theme of “more of the same,” the tablet PCs Microsoft will bring up on stage are also going to feature Windows 7, which sounds much like the HP Slate that Ballmer showed us at CES 2010.

In PCs, we’re not holding our breath for anything paradigm-altering, but there will be new notebooks that will be more powerful and even thinner than ever. Intel’s Sandy Bridge chipsets are going to be out in force, according to my colleague Brooke Crothers. PC makers will primarily be showing Sandy Bridge notebooks with quad-core processors at CES, like the 15.6-inch IdeaPad Y560p from Lenovo. There’s also a rumor that super-thin (think MacBook Air) notebooks will be on tap from Asus, Acer, and perhaps Lenovo.

Commensurate with smartphones’ impending takeover of the mobile phone category, we’re expecting their presence will be felt at the show. We’re also going to see more powerful devices at this year’s CES. The first dual-core smartphones are headed for Vegas as well, featuring Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chipset. Expect announcements on this front from LG, Motorola, and obviously Nvidia.

Apps is now one of those words that has taken on its own meaning in the American lexicon as most people who use it are referring to the apps for mobile devices. Lithuanian-based GetJar, an independent mobile phone application store with over 60,000 mobile applications for major mobile platforms such as Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile, commissioned a study that predicts a huge surge in the number of mobile app downloads and the overall size of the mobile app market.

According to the study, created by Chetan Sharma Consulting, mobile app downloads should jump from 7 billion in 2009 to almost 50 billion in 2012. By this time, the market will be worth 17.5 billion dollars, the study predicts, despite the expected lower price of mobile apps, which should drop from the current average of 2 dollars per app to 1.5 dollars in 2012.

I bet you can guess where I am going carrying my red flag. Yep, the source of the report is someone who has a vested interest in making the market look ginormous. Also, the information is somewhat appnostic (that’s just another cheap attempt to turn a phrase to describe an app agnostic) because this particular company from Lithuania (red flag number 2?) can’t do anything with Apple apps so they have a vested interest in pumping up the Android and others app market hopes as well.

The apps industry is going to grow. There is no need to commission anyone to make that prediction. It’s a no brainer. As to how big will it get? It’s anyone’s guess and the real intrigue as we move forward is the growing intensity of the battle for the platform of choice between the iPhone and Android devices.

Our dreams are visual. I haven’t met anyone who had a dream of “hearing” without illustrations. We need to “see” things to really understand.

We created a picture book that will “show” you how to use Microsoft Excel instead of using alot of words. By just flipping through the pages it is easy for the common person to absorb the meat of the book. Learning Microsoft Excel with pictures is easy on the mind, easy on the person and a fast way to learning what normally would be thought of as difficult. I have studied many instruction manuals and have found that it is difficult to stay away from being wordy. I spent a whole day on just one simple page to make the illustration show the point and procedure. I would test this on kids to make sure that these illustrations and pictures that show you how and where to click is easy to understand.

I firmly believe it is what we know that makes our lives what it is. Our biggest challenge in life is learning. I come to this conclusion because of the evidence I see of people assuming they know when they don’t know. All our problems come from what we don’t know. All our decisions, thought process, attitutudes and emotions all come from what we know. We error in assuming. Our crime in life is about assuming.

My goal in this picture book is for the mind to comprehend new and exciting information quickly and effortless. We have a much more pleasant experience when we are dealing with illustrations. Surveys Show Lack of Knowledge on Deep Linking Adversely Affecting Sem and Web Directories

For the Internet and World Wide Web to survive in today’s so called Web 2.0 climate it needs to preserve the integrity of what made the web work in the first place and that is take care of links and their various usages.

Deep Linking as far as the World Wide Web is concerned is described as making a point or hyperlink that points to a specific page or image on another website and accessing that URL directly as opposed to going into the website via the homepage or main page.

Now in its basic form the World Wide Web is, as the name suggests a connection of inter-related computers and websites connected to each other by links and the whole thing comes together and manifests itself resembling that of a spiders web hence the name…web. With me so far?

Surveys have shown recently that an apparent lack of knowledge with regard to proper linking and deep linking especially could have an adverse effect on the way that web sites and ultimately Search Engines report and classify data.

The problem lies with the fact that Web Masters and Web Directories brought up in the ways of what is now called Web 1.0 that is to say, the old fashioned way are now becoming fewer and fewer with more and more newer webmasters using automatic technology to create and monitor links pages.

The knock on effect on this is that if only one page of a site is linked externally and the internal linking structure of the site is not correct or doesn’t function properly then there is no way that the Search Engines can classify or rank a site properly and hence the downgrading of facilities and pages.

Correct usage and knowledge of linking “netiquette” and best practice will go a long way to solving the problem but today’s webmaster is no longer prepared to wait the time to “learn their craft” rather relying on automated systems to do this work for them and hence the overall levels of bad practice and ignorance are rising.

Now in recent years the tendency has arisen for website owners to control the points at which websites are accessed by the search engine’s spiders and bots and therein lies the problem.

It was at this point that everyone lost the plot big time and in their haste to control what was spidered and when, a lot of webmasters virtually killed their points of access and entry as far as good old Googlebot, Yahoo slurp and Msnbot were concerned and as such it has come to pass that they now have a much greatly reduced number of their web pages indexed and the various knock on effects that these bring.

The answer boys and girls? Open up your websites more, let spiders index pages deep in your site and if the truth be know, if you are a believer in the whole concept of “Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)” or “Siloing” then actually your own deep internal links correctly managed can not only do you the power of good as far as Directories are concerned but can help you in your own internal SEM as well.
