Here, I will give you a brief overview of one of my search engine optimization strategies that I have been using on two of my websites with excellent results. It involves creating a particular page on your website that is highly optimized for one individual keyword, and then using an external linking strategy that will help your page to rank high in the search engines for this keyword.


First, use the Google Adwords keyword tool or a tool that I like called Keyword Country, and create a list of 3-5 keywords that you would like to target. You can certainly pick more, but it is important not to be overwhelmed right from the start so I suggest starting small with only a handful of keywords.


Note that you do not want the keywords to be too general, as there will be way too much competition. For example, if the topic of your website was on stock investing, then you would have a much easier time getting a higher ranking for “trading small cap stocks” than for the term “stock market.”


What you will want to do is create a page on your website with an article or some other content that is centered around this keyword (for our example you would want to write an article about picking and trading small cap stocks), and make sure that you put your exact keyword within the body of your article at least a few times. I could talk more about keyword density, but quite frankly I think it is much more important to put your energy and creating a quality visitor experience, so all I will say is that you should have this exact keyword within the text of your article at least four times.

Finally, Twitter Search to Rank Tweets by Popularity

twitter logoTwitter is often touted as the search engine to tell you what’s happening this minute.  While it is incredible to find out what is trending across the twitterverse at any given moment it is disappointing to find that tweets from the historical past (*ahem*..5 to 7 days ago) are no longer available in search results!

That has finally changed!

This past Friday Twitter API Announcements released information that it was working on a beta project to start ranking “the most popular tweets for a query, rather than only the most recent tweets”!  What this means is that Twitter search is starting to function more like a real search engine where authority (popularity) of a tweet is as important as recency!

Here’s an example to drill my point home.  Earlier this year Sun CEO, Jonanthan Schwartz (@OpenJonathan) created a lot of buzz by using a #haiku to announce his resignation on Twitter.

For someone searching for relevant or buzzworthy information on Jonathan Schwartz in general you’ll probably get his most recent tweets or @replies to him.  However, if you did a specific search for his resignation tweet using multiple search queries you get nothing!  Nada!

A similar search query on Google, on the other hand, yields the results below, answering my question what about Jonathan Schwartz has been most relevent or popular on Twitter, up to this minute or at any time.

Twitter has yet to divulge details of what is considered a popular tweet.  It might be number of retweets, it could be inbound links to a tweet from powerful blogs, it could be a combination of such things.  The key thing to note is this is a huge step towards making social search work better!

People are spending 7 hours a day on Facebook, and generating upwards of 600 tweets per second on Twitter .  In fact, Facebook has dethroned Yahoo! as the second largest site and overtaken Google in traffic growth.  Businesses must social-media-optimize themselves to be found in these social networks for relevant keywords.

In Twitter search’s current incarnation, all of the karma companies have acquired for creating buzz worthy tweets are lost.  However, with this small tweak in their API, we are a step closer to being social media optimized and found online for past efforts.

The Truth About Google Page Rank And The Sandbox

There are many speculations out there about how long a website has to be around before Google will begin to give it a high ranking; all things being equal of course. It used to be well known that until a website celebrated its one year anniversary, Google placed it in a virtual sandbox. This is a place where a website is placed, virtually of course, where it cannot attain high rankings for keywords with large monthly search volume. Our testing has verified this to some extent. Let us explain further.

The reason for this minimum web site age goes to a very serious problem caused by flash marketing sites, targeted to marketing products. These sites often have a very short lifespan, so in order to minimize the potential for index contamination; Google has this minimum age imposed.

If you have a website, even if it has only one page, and you have had it online for at least a year, our testing has shown that you should no longer be imposed this virtual ranking cap by Google. This sandbox effect usually applies for keywords that have over 5,000 monthly searches, so potentially most of you would never run into this problem. Granted that your site has to abide by all of Google’s SEO guidelines, and be well put together with clean code and meaningful content.

Most people are led to believe by unscrupulous SEO individuals, that there is some magic strategy that can bypass this. Unfortunately, we have tested every variant to try and reach high rankings on new sites, before the one year mark, and we are confident in saying that there is no magic bullet when it comes to this.
