Blackberry 8100 Pearl : It’s Remarkably Small, Incredibly Powerful

Conceived and developed by Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM), BlackBerry business phones and wireless handhelds are designed to boost work and enterprise on the move. Email access and web browsing capabilities have ensured the popularity of BlackBerry smartphones among business entrepreneurs.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 is the first in the series to integrate a digital camera, MP3 player, video player and an expandable memory slot and signals RIM’s entry into the consumer market. Slightly larger than an I-pod nano, a thin and light (3.1 ounces) form factor and a very solid, high-quality feel – the BlackBerry Pearl is one of the lightest and smallest smartphones.

RIM has reduced the number to keys by approximately 50 percent to give the Pearl an all new look. The user interface gets an intuitive makeover with the integration of a trackball navigation and the trackball itself resembles a dazzling pearl! A large, ultra-bright, high-resolution LCD colour screen with light sensing technology displays vivid visuals.

The keypad is the SureType hybrid QWERTY with dedicated send, end, convenience, power and mute keys. This easy-to-use smartphone is equipped with call management features such as smart dialing, conference calling, speed dialing and call forwarding. Add to it features such as wireless push delivery of email and data, secure access to Internet and intranet-based applications, single mailbox integration, attachment viewing of popular file formats and you have an application powerhouse in your palms.

The quad-band BlackBerry Pearl also provides seamless connectivity through Bluetooth, wireless modem, EDGE and GPRS. What makes the Pearl standout from other handsets in the BlackBerry series is its multimedia kit. The 1.3 mega pixel digital camera, MP3 and video players on the Pearl might not be very impressive but nonetheless they serve to break the monotony and provide some much needed entertainment.

Blackberry Pearl 8120

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry series had, due to its business-class utilitarianism, managed to capture most of the business market. But its bulkiness and lack of extra features were not allowing it to be as popular as its true potential demanded it to be. With the launch of the Blackberry Pearl 8120, RIM has made a bold statement. The first change is its refreshing new looks. Coming with a size specification of 4.2”X2”X0.6” this phone is comparatively sleek when compared to BlackBerry’s earlier models and weighs 88 grams. The side mounted thumbwheel has also been removed which was not bad, but often proved to be a nightmare for left-handed users. In the place of the basic up-down action key, sits a 360 degree swivel action roller ball, which justifies the name Pearl(It even glows white when you use it). This gives the user the freedom to scroll easily, just like what a mouse does for a PC.

Released in the third quarter of 2006, the Blackberry Pearl 8120, better known as the BlackBerry Pearl, is a quad band GSM device. It is the first in the BlackBerry series to incorporate a camera and other multimedia features. Though the camera is of basic specifications – 1.3 MP; still the picture quality is good even in dark conditions, thanks to the rather powerful flash feature. The QWERTY keyboard is the same for a BlackBerry user, but for somebody unaccustomed to this series, it would take some time to be more comfortable as the keyboard has the standard pattern, but with half the number of keys! The email setup is very impressive, with the BlackBerry enterprise server and the provision to install Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk for the user to stay in touch. The screen is a standard 65,000 colors, with a resolution of 240X260 pixels. The phone also has a built-in media player for playing MP3 files and videos. Battery life is good, with upto 15 days of standby time and 3.5 hours of talktime.

Blackberry 8110 Pearl Review – Same Difference?

Blackberry 8110 Pearl Review – Same Difference?

The 2007 release of the Blackberry 8100 Pearl certainly caught plenty of attention as it was the first of these Mobile Internet & E-mail mobile phones that strived to be a compact and accessible to more than just the business market.

This was mainly due to the unusual half-QWERTY keyboard that made the 8100 more like a standard bar phone in terms of appearance, thus broadening the appeal when compared to the normal Blackberry devices which were less than compact (putting it mildly).

With the new Blackberry 8110 Pearl, the Canadian manufacturers are clearly looking to consolidate and build on the relative success experienced by its predecessor.

The majority of the feature set from the older Pearl still remain; notably the lightweight design; Bluetooth 2.0 (no A2DP sadly); USB Port; microSD card slot and obviously the standard Blackberry E-mailing services.

What has been added to the above is built-in GPS for easy navigation and the camera has also been upped to 2 Megapixel. Admittedly not groundbreaking, but it’s a start.

Sadly still remaining, is the Blackberry customised user interface which may be good for some, but in my opinion is not particularly user friendly & far less easy to use than Windows Mobile. It is a little baffling to see why Blackberry are continuing to persevere with this when it would be much more sound business decision to update this more along the lines of the Windows, or even (dare I say it) the Apple UI.

Still present as ever, is the trackball navigation wheel which seems to have split opinion amongst users. Personally I feel that this is a very-good method of navigation, but implementation is slightly too loose and with a few software adjustments to this, it could easily become more popular and widely-used.

Overall, the Blackberry 8110 Pearl is a minor – and with the exception of the new GPS module & updated camera – almost unnecessary upgrade to the original Pearl. With possibly an upgraded UI, Wi-Fi, 3G and re-designed keyboard implemented this would be a worthwhile upgrade for owners of the original Pearl, but with so little being changed or tweaked, it is unlikely it would worth bothering with, unless you really want that GPS in your Blackberry.
