Optimizing Website Performance & Internet Marketing

Before rolling up your sleeves to start designing your website, take a minute to think about your web marketing objectives. The more you know about your plans, your targeted audience and what you want to sell and where, the more effective your website will be. You will know exactly which elements to incorporate into your headings and pages to get noticed by search engines and potential customers, and you will be able to squeeze as much performance out of your Web applications as possible.

Defining Web marketing

Before setting marketing objectives you will have to know what Internet marketing is all about. Internet marketing, also known as online marketing, Internet advertising, or e-Marketing, is the marketing or promotion of goods and services on the Internet. For many entrepreneurs this definition does not stand alone and is deeply intertwined with obtaining a high quantity of web traffic and good search engine rankings.

How good is your Web marketing?

Many questions arise when analyzing your own personal marketing strategies. How much Web traffic do you get? Does it generate sales? Which search engines are you listed with? How high are your search engine rankings? Have you done SEO? Is your company’s brand being reinforced? Knowing the answers to these questions is the first step in establishing good marketing. Once you identify the weaknesses in the results you can start strengthening your weak links, adjust your website lay-out, enrich your homepage content, and realize your goals and objectives.

Objectives for commercial Website marketing

1. Saving money

-          Provide as much information as you can to potential customers, especially those already engaging in the buying process.

-          Opt for resources that can save you money – sending information via email is definitely cheaper than distributing printed materials or CDs.

-          Updating your Website in ‘real time’ can be quite affordable.

-          Websites provide easy access to resources and information. Keeping your Website stocked with informative content, comprehensive product descriptions, and a F.A.Q. (frequently asked questions) page will cut down on your customer service and staff costs.

2. Creating vital leads

-          Many Website visitors will not buy at first glance, but return several times to a site before making a decision. By offering a well-designed, informative and exciting Website you can cut down on the amount of times visitors need before they make up their mind.

-          Keep the lines of communication open by offering:

3. E-commerce or Online sales

-          To increase conversions include “call to action” prompts on your pages. Popular phrases are: “Buy now,” “Sign up here,” “Call now,” “Free Shipping,” or “Click here!”

-          Provide capabilities for on-line transactions, such as a shopping cart and easy payment options.

-          Real-time processing versus delayed purchasing. Real-time processing entails that when a payment is processed, the order is immediately closed by automated e-commerce software. This order closing method is typically used by companies with a steady volume of orders. Smaller businesses with infrequent sales may opt for the more affordable delayed purchasing method. This means that after the payment is collected, the order will be processed manually.

Once all these objectives have been set in place, you have decided on which website features to use, your website has been search engine optimized, and you know which search engines and directories to target, you will be well on your way to achieve e-commerce success and greatness. Before you know it, you’ll be climbing the rankings like a true champion!

Increase Your Rankings By Optimizing For Search Engines

The higher your page comes up in search engine results, the greater the traffic that is directed to your website. That’s what search engine optimization is about. Webmasters strive to maintain high rankings with their sites by using popular search terms to get their sites ranked high among the search engines. Techniques for getting top-ranking are ever changing, an ongoing.
A high search engine ranking is only important if people will be searching for your product or service on a search engine. One of the most important criteria in getting a good search engine ranking is the number of back links you have to your website from related websites.
One of the most important things you can do to ensure your success at improved search engine ranking is to develop a solid plan of action. Yes one of your main objectives is search engine rankings but your other goal is traffic that converts into sales.
“If you build it, they will come,” is the famous quote from the movie Field of Dreams. However, as all too many webmasters and business owners have discovered, just building a website is no guarantee of receiving visitors. This means that just because a website is listed in the search engines it doesn’t mean that it will be found.
It is the process of increasing the amount of visitors to your website by ranking high in the search results of a search engine. The reason you want your site to rank high is to attract visitors, by attracting more an more visitors this will convert into sales. Search engines will examine the text on your pages and look for keyword relevancy. The frequency of the keyword on a site is very important.
The better optimized on some keywords your site is, the faster it will be displayed on the first page. So keyword inclusion and placement is very important. To get an idea of the number of times a keyword is searched for per month, type a keyword into overture or Google search. This is how keyword density is calculated; it is the total number of keywords that are repeated divided by all content words. The greater the specificity of your keyword is, the less competition you will face. When editing your copy make sure the keyword is naturally placed in your content and is not repeated to many times.
However, you must be stringent about who you link to and how many links you have. Article writing is a very good method of building your sites rankings and getting links, so is press releases, this helps in the same way, but for many businesses this is not an easy task.
It is also important to understand that not all links are considered equally valuable by the search engines. Although content is very important, you will also receive credit for the number of links to your site. A high number of incoming links is extremely helpful to your rating. There are many more factors that go into marketing a website, you do need keyword rich content, but you also need links and offline marketing to really push your marketing for your business. To search engines, incoming links are like votes in favor of your website.

Optimizing Your Dating Site: Getting it Found on Google

So you have laboured intensively over your PHP, CSS, and HTML for months and months to finally unveil your ultimate masterpiece: a unique dating website with the most advanced chat and dating features available.  Or, perhaps you finally pulled out the old credit card and purchased a readymade script, and have finally figured out how to successfully upload the thing onto the net.  Either way, I’m sure you’ve already decided on the niche you plan to fill, be it for a specific geographical location, or a specific group or subculture.  After all, creating a general and international site may seem appealing at first, but that niche has been way overfilled.  Besides, who wants to join a dating website where the other 16 members are dispersed all over the globe?   Nevertheless, the days and weeks are passing by, and the members you thought would flock to your new and amazing creation just aren’t coming, and even your closest friends aren’t checking their profiles anymore.  It’s time to get your dating website noticed.  It’s time to get found on Google.

The process of getting your website found on the search engines is called SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and the search engine you need to concentrate most of your efforts on is Google.  Google is now king of the hill, and if you can impress this great king, it’s likely you will also impress the rest of the nobles (i.e. Yahoo, MSN, etc.).  This will not be an easy task, as there are millions of other worthy subjects also desperately vying for Google’s attention. Unfortunately, Google only has room for so many at the head table.  This is because the majority of internet searches never go beyond the first two pages. So if you’re not in the top 20 for at least one keyword or phrase, you might as well not even exist.  So no matter how awesome you think your new dating site is, and no matter how much your friends say they like it, it will take a significant number of members to call the thing a success.  So unless you’re planning on doing some local advertising, which can be a good idea at times, your best bet is to vie for one of these cherished positions.

The first thing you have to do is pick your keywords and phrases.  These are the words and phrases that people will type into Google and ultimately find your site.  Unless you have picked a domain name that already contains your keywords, like datingdivorcedgrandmothers.com, you will have to figure out what words people are already searching for in regards to your unique niche, and create a title tag with these words.  The best way to do this is to find keyword tools on the internet to help you figure out what people are searching for.  Opening up a Google Adwords account can be a great idea, if for nothing else but to use Google’s keyword tool.  This will tell you how many times certain words and phrases are searched for every month.  You’ll want to pick words and phrases that are relevant to your site, and that get searched for a moderate amount of times each month.  You don’t want to try to optimize your site for the keyword dating, because there is simply too much competition. And unless you plan to spend a million dollars a year on an SEO company, as many of these sites are doing, you won’t stand a chance. Your best efforts are spent fighting for keyphrases like divorced dating or Detroit dating. Better yet: divorced dating in Detroit.

When you’ve figured out what keywords you’re going to vie for, it’s time to make sure you’ve placed these words in your title tags.  I’m always surprised at how many new dating sites are using their actual name for the title. Nobody will be searching for: thegreatloveboutique.com, unless of course they’ve heard it somewhere.  Once again, think of the words people will be using in their actual searches that could lead them to your site.  When you’ve placed these words in your title tags, changing them up a bit for each page of your site, you then need to make sure you’ve also placed them in your meta-tags, along with dispersing them throughout the content of your site.  You can even place these keywords in your alt tags for images, and title tags for links.  However, don’t go overboard.  If you use these keywords too much, Google will penalize you for what they call spamming. Try to keep it as natural as you can. If you don’t know how to do any of this, your best bet is to Google how.  Without knowing how to do this, you’re site really doesn’t stand a chance.

Although there is a great deal more you should learn about onsite optimization (what you do to your site to get found), the majority of your time should be spent on acquiring links for your site (offsite optimization).  This is when another website links to your website.  Google considers this a kind of vote, and the more votes you get, especially from similar sites, the more Google will push you up the ranks.  Now here is the process I would go through.  First, submit your site to as many dating directories as you can.  You should start with the high PR (PageRank) sites, and move your way down.  If you don’t have a Google toolbar that shows PageRank at the top of your screen, get one.  Google it and download one.  The higher the PageRank, the more valuable the link will be back to yours.  And the more links you get, the more PageRank you will get (just be warned that Google only updates their PageRank on the screen ever few months).  Many of these directories will ask for you to link back to them.  This is called a reciprocal link, and it’s a bit of a pain in the neck.  If you know how to enter links into your code, do so at your best discretion.  Reciprocal links can help, especially if they are from a relevant and high PR site, but they are not as valuable as a one-way link.

When you’re done with directories, it would also be a good idea to look for other dating sites that might want to trade links with you. However, be warned.  Many dating sites will require you to first give them a link before they consider your site.  You then take the time to enter their link on your site, and you never do hear back from them.  Even though most website owners eventually remove the links to sites that never link back, these mean sites count on the few who don’t check.  After a few weeks of trading links with dating sites and directories, you will likely want to put your head into a noose. The dishonesty and selfishness of even the most successful dating sites will absolutely astonish you.  If you’re ambitious, you will monitor your backlinks (links to your site) every few months, because some sites will remove them to make your reciprocal link a one-way link from you to them.

All in all, however, directory links, reciprocal links, and 3-way links are not worth that much anymore.  This is because Google is hoping sites acquire links the natural way. This would happen if someone really likes your site and adds a link to it from their own relevant site.  If they use your keywords in the link, this link becomes even more valuable.  However, you’ll find out eventually that not many people do this, unless a site is really, really amazing, or the content is especially unique or incredible.  Nevertheless, it’s always a good idea to try to solicit links from people who do find your site.  The best way to do this is to offer up a textarea box that contains your link code, using your keywords as the link or anchor text.  Above the code can you can place a nice little note soliciting a link.  Once again, not many site owners will do this for nothing, but every now and again you might be pleasantly surprised.  Just don’t promise them a link back unless you’re actually intending to consider it.  Way too many dating sites already practice this dishonest behaviour.  Then, when your link requests have been strategically placed throughout your site, where admiring visitors can find them, you will probably want to consider advertising.  Google Adwords now provides one of the most cost-effective ways of advertising. This advertising is targeted, so people looking for a particular dating site can find yours, at least until your site works its way up the ranks and gets found that way.  Best of luck.

Why Optimizing is Important – Title Tags

While doing niche and keyword research with one of my favorite tools, Ad Word Analyzer, I did a search on the keyword “optimizing”. One of the keyword phrases Ad Word Analyzer brought up under the search on optimizing was “optimizing title tags page”. Not that this phrase is unique in any way, but the results were different enough that they caught my eye. Any Internet marketer will tell you search engine optimization or SEO, is a hot topic because without proper SEO, targeted traffic to your Adword ads, website or blog is non-existent.

What caught my eye about the keyword phrase “optimizing title tags pages”, were the amount of searches done last month and the results Google produced for “optimizing title tags page”. One thousand four hundred and ten people searched with the keywords “optimizing title tags page” last month and Google produced a grand total of four results. Four results for “optimizing title tags pages” on the whole of Google. These results were not much help to people searching “optimizing title tags page”.

Ad Word Analyzer is great tool for locating these anomalies when doing market research on a new niche, keywords or for article writing. What this search revealed to me is there must be a sufficient amount of confusion when it comes to SEO. One thousand four hundred and ten people searched “optimizing title tags page” with only four results. There also were no Google Adwords ads. Some may think they have no idea what Google Adwords are, but they really do since any person that has used Google has seen Google Adwords ads on the right side of any Google page. These ads, located on the right side of any Google page, are Google Adwords ads. Advertisements put their by Internet marketers to sell us products and services. Not one Google Adwords ad was accounted for when people searched “optimizing title tags page”.

Most importantly, the people that searched “optimizing title tags page” were probably looking for help optimizing meta tags. Internet marketers know that meta tag optimization is a minimal factor now that SEO hinges on relevancy and fresh new content for optimal page rank among the search engines. This is why I believe there is a total absence of Google Adword ads when someone searches “optimizing title tags page”. Internet marketers get charged per click each time their ad is clicked by a web surfer. So it is in the best interest of the Internet marketer to do his research and optimize his Google Adwords ad for specific and targeted traffic. Wasted clicks can be financially devastating to a Google Adwords campaign.

One other lucrative point that Ad Word Analyzer revealed to me that succeeded in motivating me to research this anomalie further. One thousand four hundred and ten people searched the keyword phrase “optimizing title tags page” last month and I am sure about the same amount of people will do the same this month. Which means there is a market out there of people that need information to bring them up to speed on search engine optimization. Ad Word Analyzer is warming up for my next Google Adwords campaign targeting these people.

Optimizing Websites For Google

In today’s competitive online market, anyone who is even a casual browser is aware of how important Google is to any business. Chances are, the bulk of your customers will be finding out about your business via Google, and whether you offer high-tech communication solutions or knitting supplies, you can bet that your sales will be affected by the position that your website occupies on a list of natural Google results. While you can certainly do your best to make a good site that is optimized for the Google search engine, there are many specific strategies that you can use to ensure that your website gets the traffic it needs.

The first and most obvious place to make your improvements is on the page itself. What do you offer in terms of good content? The Google search engine will search for context as well as content and through having good material on your site -articles, industry-specific glossaries and essays, to name a few- you’ll be that much more attractive to Google. Essentially, you are looking to optimize your use of keywords and the context that they come in. Part of this is simply making sure that you have a good site that gives the people they want, but remember that it does go beyond that.

Keyword density, the amount of time that a word or phrase is used on your site, is an important factor to keep in mind. Research is often done to ensure that they keywords that you are using will bring the right customers to your website. If the content of your site is too general, you’ll will end up not being specific enough and so loose relevance! Try to put yourself in the mind of someone who doesn’t even know what your service is. What questions is this person going to be asking themselves, and what should you do to draw them to you?

When you are planning to optimize your site for Google’s search engine, you should also remember that work should be done off your site as well. One thing that the Google search engine will judge you on is how many other sites will link to yours. If you are in a specialized business, where competitors are offering the precise same service that you are, there is a certain cachet in being a site that is linked to, which is something that Google has decided to use as a measure of your worth. Link building is the process whereby people make themselves more attractive to the Google search engine by ensuring that their link is everywhere. Remember that reciprocal links do not hold as much weight any more and so you should try to stick to one way links; while they can be very handy for building a rapport with other sites or businesses, keep in mind the fact that they are not appropriate tools when it comes time to help you with link building.

As you can see, making sure that your website gets the highest rank possible from the Google search engine is something of a full-time job. Make sure that you understand these basic concepts before you try to revolutionize the world with your web marketing abilities.

Ben Norman is a UK based SEO Consultant, published author and specialist in organic search engine optimization. Ben works with a wide range of businesses helping them when optimising websites for Google

Optimizing Google Adsense

So you want to make money with Google Adsense? I don’t blame you, who doesn’t want residual income! This article will show you how to better optimize Google Adsense to make more money from your web site(s)…
First and foremost is: Positioning
Where you position your Adsense link boxes and banner ads is extremely important. Trying to make money from the bottom of your pages within your website just won’t cut it. You need to add your Adsense links right in the heart of your template or right in the heart of your content. I would personally suggest both actually.

Adding Adsense in the heart of your template:
Link Units:
Since the introduction of Google Adsense “link units”, we can now add what looks like a “menu system” to compliment our menu system within our website. This is HUGE. Have you ever just clicked on a website and kept clicking on the menu links? I know we all have. By adding a “Google link units” to your menu, you will get more clicks than you thought possible. Try adding the link units near the top for better performance and try creating your link units to match the color of your menu system in place. Once in a while I find myself clicking on a menu link unit without even realizing it which in turn gives more money to the website owner.

Leaderboards & Skyscrapers:
These may very well be your “bread & butter”. I only say this because of the sheer size of these ads units. The best place to add these ad units is obvious; Straight across the very top of your website (leaderboards), and straight down the side of your template (skyscrapers). Anywhere else may not look proper within your template and may look unprofessional.
Square & Rectangle Ad Units:
These are great to compliment the mass amount of content within your website and also within your recommended resources. You want to compliment your content, you don’t want Adsense to BE your content because this will look poor on your part. Adsense is very popular with webmasters; who doesn’t want to make some extra money. However, don’t forget that many of your visitors are also used to seeing Adsense within a website, and need a good reason to click on them.

Square and rectangular units are great to use within articles posted on your website or within your link resources. Try adding your Adsense boxes above your resource links within a page to give your Adsense account that added extra exposure.
Just remember that Google allows up to 3 ad units per page. Using these 3 strategies will help to better optimize Adsense for positioning! Let’s now go onto targeting…
Optimizing Adsense: Taking out non-related ads!
Do you ever wonder how ads like “business card specials” ever get displayed on to your website when your company content is all about baby clothing? Since the introduction of “Adwords Site Targeting”, we now have to keep an eye on the ads being displayed on our website(s). Companies may now specifically target your website for more exposure. There is no restriction whether the website is content related or not, just more marketing exposure for the advertiser.

Filtering Adsense Advertisers:
Within your Adsense manager, you have the option of using the “Competition Filter” which allows us to remove certain websites from the ads being displayed regularly. This is going to be an on-going optimization task in the future. Without filtering the ads being displayed within your website, you might find yourself with ads unrelated to your industry and possibly some ads that have a negative effect within your site.
If you don’t remove all the unwanted ads being displayed on your website, you might end up hurting your Adsense performance online. The more targeted you can get your Google Adsense ads to display on each page, the better your chances at being able to make more money. Try to take a moment every week to study the ads being displayed on your website.

Open up a note pad, or word document and record all the websites you don’t want to be displayed anymore. Add these sites to your “filter list” within your Adsense account.
Remember to add the website (within your filter list) like so.Adding anything after or before the url will only prevent the company from displaying one of their many ads like so .This way you stop anything from the entire website from showing up within your Adsense campaign online. The more you optimize your Adsense filter, the better your performance will pick up and the less non-related ads will be displayed on your website.

Optimizing For Google Image Searches

Most people know how to do SEO for Google’s main search function, but doing SEO for Google Image Search is a bit different. If you’ve got a lot of images you want to make certain Google Image Search picks up, here are some tips to make those images attract Google’s attention. Many of these tips also work with MSN’s and Yahoo’s image search functions.

Google’s Image Search is done by the Google Image bot. This little web spider goes out and indexes images, much like the main search bot indexes web pages. However, the image bot doesn’t visit pages nearly as frequently. In fact, it might hit a website once every six months or so. This means if you put up new images the day after the bot visits, those images may not be indexed for half a year!

So how can you make certain your images are picked up and ranked well? By knowing how to appeal to this little image bot, that’s how. First, remember that the Google bot doesn’t actually see your image – it doesn’t know the visual different between a black square and the Mona Lisa. What it does see is your description of the image, so you have to make certain that description is incredibly well done. There are four things to work on here.

The first is your ALT text. This is the text that appears on your site if, for whatever reason, your image does not load. Basically, you want it to describe your image in detail. Be sure to get several keywords into the ALT text. For example, a floral site may describe a bouquet of red roses with ALT text similar to “This beautiful bouquet of red roses can be delivered to anyone in San Francisco, CA, from Amy’s Flowers.” This gets the city and name of the flower store into the text.

The image filename is also important. Don’t simply name that image of the red roses as roses1.gif or something similar. Name it something a bit more descriptive like red-rose-bouquet-1. No, it may not seem that much different, but its actually does help.

The surrounding text of an image can also help Google learn what the image is about. Add captions below your images to give the search bots yet another line of text to read, and try to work in something about the image into the nearby text if possible.

Finally, Google will take a look at your overall page theme too. If you add some Google AdSense ads to your site, you’ll see exactly what Google thinks of your site, including its main focus and its location. If these ads don’t seem to fit with your services or products, it may be a sign that you need to re-evaluate your keywords.

A few other things relevant to images:

Google won’t count images done in slide shows or shown via any sort of script. Try to avoid using these if possible.

Put all of your images in one folder on your website, and don’t change that folder name. If you do, Google may not know where your images have moved to.

Don’t do optimization work on template images or on images you use as a background. These aren’t really useful to searchers, and there’s no point in doing work on them. Do the same for any images you use for buttons and other background items. Do, however, do SEO work on your company logo and on your banners since users may search for them.

Free Twitter Marketing Tools – Optimizing Twitter to Get a Massive Following

You may have heard of an internet sensation called Twitter.  The concept of this site is simple:  update people on what you’re currently doing in one hundred forty characters or less.  You can follow people, people can follow you, you can quote what other people are saying and you can reply to what other people are saying.  Twitter essentially creates a fast paced interactive and massive community with similar interests.  So what?

When you join a club or sport, you typically join because you share an interest in that area.  Likewise, you follow people on Twitter because you share a common interest.  Since there’s no limit as to how many followers you can have, you can be in contact with thousands of people with one simple update.  It gets better though.  Imagine thousands of followers in your target market because having a large number of people following you is meaningless if there is no common interest.  If you have thousands of people following you because they have an interest in network marketing, then you have struck gold.

How do you leverage Twitter to create a massive following in your target market though?  How can you have thousands of followers without eating all the hours of your day?  The key is automation.  I have prepared a list of free Twitter marketing tools to aid you in building a massive following.  The three tools I will be talking about are:

-Twitter Karma
-Tweetree
-Tweet Later

Twitter Karma is a tool that helps you maintain a balance between people you are following and people following you.  Twitter Karma allows you to sort users in different categories primarily users that you are following but they aren’t following back, and users that are following you but you aren’t following them back.  Essentially, you just check all and either click bulk follow or bulk unfollow.  Make sure to wait about ten minutes between each submission.  That’s it.  You have a good ratio for your following/followers.

The next tool is called Tweetree.  The main thing you want to use Tweetree for is for the Retweet (RT) button and managing conversations with other users.  Remember, retweeting is simply quoting another user, and usually requires you to type everything out.   With Tweetree, there is a button when you move your mouse over a tweet and an RT button appears.  Simply click that button and hit send.  Now there is no more typing for retweets.  The second function is managing conversations.  Sometimes other users respond to your tweet, but you don’t check until later.  The time gap can lead to confusion as to what the response was referring to.  Tweetree puts a user’s response indented under your tweet so you can continue a conversation and not worry about forgetting what it was all about.

Lastly, Tweet Later is for auto-pilot use.   The main benefits of using this service is to have an automated welcome message and auto follow/unfollow actions.  To edit these settings follow these steps:
1.    Log in to Tweet Later
2.    Click Accounts
3.    Click List Accounts
4.    Click Edit

From here you can edit all automation methods you want to carry out.  Make sure to check the auto welcome box and type in your welcome message.  A word of advice for typing out your welcome message:  Do not post your affiliate link.  There are many Twitter users posting affiliate links in their welcome messages and it makes interaction very impersonal.  Instead, type a friendly message thanking them for following you and link them to a place of value.  Now when I say place of value I mean a blog, Youtube channel, articles page or Facebook.  All of these are acceptable places to lead new followers to, because it builds a personal connection and not the dreaded sales pitch.

If you want to rotate welcome messages, there is a link right above the text box that shows you how to do that.  You may want to rotate people going to your Facebook, blog or articles, so that’s a great way to send traffic everywhere.

Next you want to check automatically follow people and check automatically unfollow people.  These two options help keep your following and follower ratio in check.

That’s it.  These three free Twitter marketing tools will help you build a massive and target following to leverage your online business.  However, automated software can only do so much.  You need to interact with other users through reply messages and retweets.  Just like any business, developing relationships with people is the only way to rapidly grow your business.  By interacting with other users and applying these tools, your following will grow your Twitter following in no time.
