Will Apple Become The New Microsoft?

Much has been written about the epic battle between Apple and the Microsoft/Intel alliance. Window’s eventually triumphed in that battle..at least in terms of market share, and Apple was left on life support in the 1990’s.  But times have changed and Apple has emerged from its slumber to be the one to beat.  The question now becomes…has Apple learned from its past mistakes or is Steve Jobs and company doomed to repeat them?

Recent moves by Apple show it is very aware and is attempting to aggressively persuade the world that Apple is the new standard for the mobile web that is in the process of being formed.  Two recent announcements particularly stand out.  The change to the agreement that developers must agree to in order to submit apps to the iTunes store and the emphasis on games for the iPhone and iPad.

Gaming and applications are where the money is in software.  But they are two very different types of programs.  While people want an endless variety of different games to play, they have the opposite view on applications.  Most people want a standard set of office applications like a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software and database application that can be relied upon to be standardized and dependable.  When it comes to their work people want dependability and familiarity.  In games, just the opposite.  They want new experiences and cutting edge technology.

This is why Microsoft originally won out in the pc wars.  By having an open system that encouraged low cost hardware and an infinite number of developers to make games, they simply overwhelmed Apple which with its closed system couldn’t compete with massive scale of the competition.  Microsoft then used its monopoly of the operating system to make its office suite the standard.

What is interesting about what Apple is doing now is that it seems to be aware of the negatives of a closed OS and hardware platform like it has, and yet it is trying to create a new paradigm where the closed system becomes the new standard.  How is it doing this?  By staying several steps ahead of its competitors it is hoping that others will simply not be able to catch up.  Additionally, they are shrewdly encouraging the gaming community to develop for the platform to ensure that this time it is Apple that will have the most and best games and not the ‘open architecture’ competition which is being spearheaded by google’s android.

In addition, Apple has made changes to its developer agreement to ensure that applications that are made for the iPhone OS platform adhere to a certain quality level and can’t be easily ported over to competitors.  Some are complaining that this is anticompetitive but that’s Apple’s right.  With the amount of money at stake in the future mobile web all the major players, google, Microsoft and Apple are each trying to out-think and out-strategize each other in order to get the lion’s share of future advertising as well as software and hardware revenues.

Will Apple’s approach work?  Can it really control all three areas, hardware, software and advertising (with Apple’s iAd) and come out on top or will an open platform eventually prove too competitive.  In the end the question becomes is it possible for premium to become standard or do low cost…but lower standards always win out.  Can there be both?  Nobody knows exactly what is going on in Steve Jobs head.  In fact, he probably doesn’t know how this will all play out either.  One thing will be for sure however.  The war for the mobile space is on and it’s sure to be a bloody fight before we’re through.

Microsoft, Intel to cede tablet market to Apple?

If the Apple tablet emerges as expected, this will be another big device market, following media players and smartphones, that the PC industry cedes to Apple.

The writing is already on the wall already for Microsoft and smartphones, as spelled out in a previous post and as documented in shrinking market share numbers.

That’s not to say that Microsoft, Compaq (later Hewlett-Packard), and Intel didn’t have a chance. Remember the Compaq iPAQ PDA that debuted way back in 2000, powered by an Intel StrongARM chip running an early version of Windows Mobile?

That device had a lot of potential. The operative word being “potential.” An iPAQ could have been an iPhone. Or at the very least an iPod. And everybody could be drooling over iPAQs today instead of iPhones. Or using iPAQs instead of BlackBerrys. But of course things didn’t turn out that way.

Fast forward to 2010 (January?). Apple announces a tablet and suddenly everyone wants a tablet. (Or iSlate, if you will.)

And what have Microsoft, Intel, HP, and others been offering in the interim years when they had every opportunity to come out with a blockbuster tablet? Unattractive, bulky, half-baked convertible laptops that, let’s put it this way, have not taken the PC market by storm.

So, here’s the ,000 question, uh, make that the billion question. Why can’t the combined R&D smarts, market clout, and overall technological resources of Microsoft-Intel-HP-Dell come up with a thin, sexy compelling tablet and/or media pad that will turn heads and convince the unbelievers (the average why-would-I-need-something-like-that consumer) that a tablet is a must-have product?

Answer: Because Apple will.

Here’s a not unlikely scenario. Apple brings out the tablet/media pad, wows U.S. (and world?) consumers, sells a ton of units, Microsoft-Intel-HP-Dell follow suit with slavishly copied devices that don’t sell very well comparatively.

iPAQ PDAs: Missed opportunity?

That’s how the market for successful newfangled devices works these days. Apple creates the market and everyone else follows in a panic.

Then there’s the Intel factor. Intel also wants to be a player in this space. But Intel and its coterie of PC makers can’t get off the traditional-design laptop gravy train. Plus, as formidable a chipmaker as Intel is, it is still behind the Qualcomms and Texas Instruments of the world in building the power-efficient system-on-a-chip silicon that goes into smartphones and will likely go into tablets.

So, here’s my question for Intel et al: How many people will be buying Netbooks or Intel-based MIDs (mobile Internet devices) in 2011 if Apple has a more compelling alternative? Answer: a lot less if the Apple tablet exists.

And add Asia-based device makers offering tablets using an Nvidia Tegra 2 chip to that. A number of these tablets are expected too in 2010. In fact, Nvidia is already doing what Intel should have finished doing a long time ago: make a competitive s

ystem-on-a-chip that powers small devices. Intel had the chance to make XScale (what StrongARM eventually became) into something big for small devices six years ago. But it didn’t. And now Intel is trying to reinvent the wheel by squeezing the upcoming “Moorestown” Atom chip into smartphones.

Intel, I’m sure you think Moorestown is a great idea, but it’s a little late. Apple beat you to it by about three years.

Microsoft Sees “Strong Growth” in an Extra $300M Loss for Bing???

Back when I was a VP at a publicly-traded search marketing firm, I learned one thing: I would never make a good CFO.

It’s not that I can’t use a calculator, I just get soooo bored looking at cash flow statements, P&Ls, etc. We’d have our auditor in for meetings and I’d do my best to be busy “optimizing an important client’s web site!” ;-)

But, I’m not completely ignorant, so I’m sorry Microsoft, you can’t pull the wool over my eyes. You may say (emphasis added),

“Windows 7 continues to be a growth engine, but we also saw strong growth in other areas like Bing search, Xbox LIVE and our emerging cloud services,”

according to Peter Klein, chief financial officer at Microsoft. But when I look at your numbers, I can’t help but see this:

Now, last time I checked, a loss of $713 million was worse than $411 million.

Now, there could be a bunch of reasons for this discrepency. Maybe Bing did well, but other “online services” sucked wind. Perhaps the “strong growth” was the few points of market share that Bing picked up since launch.

What I do know is that the numbers don’t lie: Microsoft continues to struggle with its online services division.
