How to add contacts on your iPhone using Google Maps

How to add contacts on your iPhone using Google Maps

The more I explore the options available on my new iPhone the more impressed I become. One of the applications that will appear on your screen as a standard feature is called maps, and when you click on the icon, you will soon see it is Google Maps.

As I began playing around with the maps app I soon discovered a really great function of the maps app.If you use the application to look up a particular business on your iPhone that you will continue to visit in the future, you can add them to your contacts list.

In my case I was using the application to search for a pet food shop that had been recommended to us. The recommendation was such a good one and the location of the shop convenient, so I felt sure I would need to visit in the future.

After finding the shop, I started to type in the contact details but then just by chance I tapped on the arrow that was appearing on the maps app and realised that I could add the contact using Google Maps.

I will explain the exact process and steps involved

Step one: To add a location that you have looked up using the Google Maps app you need firstly type in your search term, in my case in was simply Pet Food.

Step two: My screen shows a Google Map showing a red pinpoint marker and the name Pets Paradise.

Step three: Google Maps have located the exact place that my friend had recommended so I simply tap on the Blue arrow.

Step Four: I am presented with a screen full on information about Pets Paradise, including a website address and contact numbers. I also have the exact address and options at the bottom of the screen offering directions to and from.

Step Five: Scroll a little further down the screen and you will have the option of adding the details to contacts, sharing the location or adding to your bookmarks.

Step Six: When you hit the button to add contacts you will then be presented with choosing create new either contact or add information to an existing contact.

If you are in business, you are probably thinking just as I was how important it is to have a listing with Google.

I suppose this is just another of many hundreds of examples of how Google constantly shows why they are a global trendsetter in business.

I started to think about how many of my friends and colleges use the iPhone and how many of them like using technology. Being listed and noted on Google Maps could just be the easiest and cheapest marketing a local retail business will ever do.

In 2010 and onward the speed at which people do business really knows no bounds and being able to add a complete business profile in your iPhone contacts in Four seconds is terrific.

 Google Demographic Profiling

The other thing that we should take from this is the fact that as business use of applications like the one we are talking about continues to rise, Google have an amazing database of users, who will be profiled like never before.

Just imagine being able to drill down on the exact buying patterns of consumers and knowing exactly how far, when and how they make purchases. To put a dollar value of Goggles demographic profiling is almost impossible.

Knowing exactly who searches for a particular product or service by age, location, income and much more enables Google tremendous target marketing abilities when selling their adwords service amongst the myriad of other offers in the Google armoury.

Demographic Maps Increase Marketing Effectiveness

Demographic Maps Increase Marketing Effectiveness

So you have finally finished your website and you are ready to turn on the traffic and start taking orders. Usually you are cautious about buying traffic, so you search around for some free methods. You learn about traffic exchanges and banner advertising, as well as article marketing and directory submissions. As you work on these methods you start to notice something disturbing: your visitors come and go without buying anything.

Free methods can work with many different types of sites, but the common ones usually only work with sites of general appeal since it is difficult to target your prospects by demographics with the free methods mentioned above. Website owners who follow the demographics of their visitors are often surprised at who actually buys from their site.

A demographic map is one of the most important tools you will use in marketing your business both online and offline. What is a demographic map? It is essentially a breakdown of who your ideal prospects are. Any time I give marketing advice I always ask people to tell me who the perfect customer would be. Many entrepreneurs get excited about their products, but forget to think about who is going to buy, and that is the most important part of the marketing plan. The best direct response marketing companies in the world have demographic maps and use them all the time. The formula has been perfected many times because they know how to identify the target market.

Ask yourself if you know whether you would rather market to single or married people, to men or women, to older people or younger people, to which region of the world, and to which interests. A demographic map can help you find the perfect customers, as long as you know who they are. I can tell you one secret that you should never forget: you will convince more people to buy by being as specific as possible. What I mean by that is do not try to reach everybody because by doing that you will end up convincing nobody to buy. If you tailor your marketing messages for a very specific group, you will be able to match their profile on multiple points with just one advertising message.

Let us suppose you chose to target young single men in the western United States, and you choose California specifically since it has the largest population on the pacific coast.

Suddenly it becomes a lot easier to identify who your customers are and what their needs are. You can choose that you want to sell to a surfer who is interested in becoming attractive to the hot young beach bunnies. With a demographic map, you will be able to reach this kind of person and hit him full speed with your advertising, a very specific ad that talks about how your product makes life better for him. The buyers will come in droves and you will be smiling as you drive down to the bank just to look at the fat profits in your account.

Google Trying Out Hotel Prices on Maps

If you are not convinced about Google’s efforts to dominate the local search landscape then you may have a tough time believing anything at all. Google has been working on many different offerings on the local level. Some of the questions and concerns are around just how well these changes will play with Android v iPhone devices which is a fun thought to ponder. This particular experiment, however, which is discussed in the Google LatLong blog is not one of those (darn it!).

Google is experimenting, in a pretty small way apparently, with including hotel room rates with their Google Maps results. Here’s a look see.

It doesn’t take much to begin to ponder the possibilities on this kind of search experience. Which store has what item for what price kind of search results in a map could be a critical influencer as to whether a buyer even steps into one store over the other. For price driven purchases this could be a jackpot for the lowest cost types out there for sure.

Google claims that this kind of engagement by an advertiser will not affect rankings in any way. One pretty slick aspect of this particular version of this ‘service’ is that you actually can put in dates for your stay so that you can know that the rates you see are for your actual needs.

With this feature, when you search for hotels on Google Maps you’ll be able to enter the dates you plan to stay and see real prices on selected listings. You can click on the price to see a list of advertisers who have provided pricing information for that hotel, indicated by the “Sponsored” text, and click through to reserve a room on the advertiser’s site. By showing you this relevant hotel rate information directly in the Google Maps results panel we hope to make this aspect of your trip planning more speedy and efficient – so you can get where you’re going and enjoy your travel destination!

While the hotel side of this is interesting I can’t help but think that the greater applications of this service, especially in the mobile environment, could be one of the ‘next big things’ for search in general and Google in particular.

Yahoo Integrating Mobile, Maps and Search

Just in time for the iPad, Yahoo is premiering two new Apple apps based around their local/mobile search offerings. One is a fairly standard search app—but the other brings an interesting dimension to local search. Considering that, as Google reported, a third of mobile searches are local, there’s obviously a significant market for local/mobile search.

Using the iPod and iPhone’s touch-screen capabilities, users of the new Sketch-a-Search app can outline an area on a map and search within that area for a specific type of business. The feature is specifically geared toward US restaurants and lets users search by details including ambiance, ratings and types of cuisine. The app is slated to expand to other business categories and countries soon.

This is especially nice if you live in one of those megalopolii (the plural of megalopolis, of course), where you can never be sure exactly what city that awesome Thai place was in (and who on earth would remember a ZIP code?).

The regular search app also includes some cool local features:

Since mobile searchers tend to ping-pong back and forth between map applications and search, we’ve integrated maps into the app to simplify the experience. The app also allows you to customize the local maps experience: Want to see more map and fewer local results? More results and less map? It’s totally up to you. . . .

Finally, we’ve made it easier to search for what’s nearby with location-based, local results. For example, if you’re searching for plumbers here in Sunnyvale, California, the app will detect that you’re likely looking for plumbers in this area and will provide you with results in a combined map-list view. As you scroll down the list of plumbers and their reviews, the app repositions the map with the currently selected item. You can also use the map to browse the associated ratings and reviews.

The search app also includes shortcuts for Yahoo’s Movies, Finance and News areas, as well as a voice to search feature.

I think these apps (especially Sketch-a-Search) are a big step forward for mobile search. While there may already be some similar offerings out there, the backing of a big brand like Yahoo can help these apps gain popularity. We can only hope that these apps and this kind of thinking can continue after the merger with Microsoft (you know, if/when).

What do you think? What other features would you like to see in mobile search?

Marking Your Territory On Google Maps

Many of us use Google Maps to find out where a certain place is, or to get driving directions when we are going somewhere, but did you know that you can add your business to Google Maps? Not only can you add the location of your business but you can add a photo of your storefront or office and even offer your customers a printable coupon. To begin, visit the website maps.google.com. On the left side of the screen you will see the Google logo. Pan down a little further and you will see a link that says Put Your Business on Google Maps. Click on the link. You will have to login to your Google account if you have one. If you do not have a Google account you will have to create one. Don’t worry, it’s a free account and also gives you access to all sorts of other cool Google features.Click the Add a New Listing link. You will now have to fill in a simple form with your business information. Once you have filled in the form click the Next button

The next step is to enter categories for your business. For example, restaurant, dentist, real estate etc. You can also be specific with your categories. For example, Italian Restaurant or Women’s Clothing. You have the option of entering your hours of operation. If you are a business with set hours you can enter them, if not, or if you prefer to not enter your hours you do not have to do so.Also on this screen you can enter how you accept payment from your customers. You can choose cash, check, and all the different credit cards you accept as well as PayPal if applicable. Next on this screen you can add a photo of your storefront, your office, your products or even yourself. This adds a touch of personality to your listing. You can even add a YouTube video that is related to your business. Finally you can add any other details you wish to let your customers know about. Once finished, click the Submit button.

After clicking Submit, you will be asked how you wish to validate your listing. This is to prove that you are for real and legitimately listing your business. You have a few choices here. You can do it by phone, Google will phone you and give you a PIN number to enter, you can do it by text message (SMS) where a text message will be sent to your cell phone and the text message will have the PIN number, or you can have Google send you the PIN number on a postcard. Beware that the postcard method obviously takes awhile. Choose your option, (I chose SMS and it arrived within minutes) and click Finish. (Note: if you choose SMS text message for the validation, you must have supplied a mobile phone number ont he first page by clicking Add more phone numbers.)Once you receive your PIN number and validate your account, you can update your listing at any time and you can even add coupons for your loyal customers to download. If someone goes to Google and searches for a business that matches your category, you will now appear on their search results which could mean added business for you.

Google Local Search – Google Maps Info For Small Businesses

In today’s hyper competitive market, businesses need to have their websites properly Search Engine Optimized.

While many SEO companies will try to convince you that elaborate steps are needed for proper SEO, there are some things that local companies can do on their own. Other things require the expertise of a skilled SEO company and should be considered as well.

The first, and perhaps most important thing companies can do online is get listed in Google’s local listings. This is relatively simple to do.

Go to http://www.Googal.com/local and click on the button to add your business. Click on the link to “put your business on local maps.” Once you get to the screen, you can choose the “add a new listing” option.

You will be asked to fill out some basic contact information about your business. One of the lines asks for your website address. You should still fill out this information even if you do not yet have a website. While I strongly recommend that every business have a website, this is not a requirement for Google local.

You will also provide a 200 character description of your business. Take some time to make this compelling because this can be a sales point for the business.

You will then go to a screen where you fill out categories related to your business. You have up to five categories. So, a pizza restaurant may want to get themselves listed under “pizza” “Italian restaurant” and “restaurant.” If you do catering or take out, list that as well.

You have the option of listing hours of operation and payment methods. You can also upload up to 10 photos. Uploading photos of your storefront, your owners, your products, and happy customers all enhance your listing.

If you have a video of your business, you can upload that as well. As the computer becomes more video driven, this can set you apart from your competitors.

There is also a section where you can list any brands you service or carry. This is a great option for home repair companies to take advantage of.

Finally, you will have to validate your listing. There are two ways to do this. The first way is to receive a phone call at your primary business number. You have the choice of receiving a call immediately or in 5 minutes. You will also receive a PIN number. When the automated Google phone call comes in, simply type in the PIN number.

The second way is to receive and respond to a postcard which can take 2 to 3 weeks.

After you have verified the information, it can take up to 4 weeks for the information to appear in Google.

When someone types in a listing with your city’s name in it, your listing should appear. For instance, when someone types in “Riverside House Painting” a list of 10 companies appears. Often, this is the first listing in Google, but even when it’s not, it is almost always on the first page of Google.

If there are more than 10 companies competing for “house painting” in the city of Riverside, then there is a section for more results.

If you want to get higher rankings within the first 10 competing companies, do the following:

1. Get listed in as many local directories as possible including online yellow pages.
2. Ask your customers to review you on local business review sites.
3. Be located near the city center (though there’s not a lot you can do about this one.)

A qualified SEO firm can help you with all of this, but if you don’t have the budget to get hire one, get started on your own with Google’s local search.
