It seems to be all about Apple right now, but can a competitor beat Apple at its own game?
Companies like Archos are coming out with a line of new Android tablet PCs that are likely to be a direct rival for the iPad and quite possibly take a bite out of Apples’ market share as the popularity of the Android operating system increases. Android tablets are sleek, attractive, and pack quite a punch in the specs department. With 5 new internet tablets on the way, Archos is positioning itself to be a hefty competitor.
How can a touch screen tablet that doesn’t bear the Apple name ever overtake the immense popularity of iPad? The secret of taking out the king of tablets just might lie in the laundry list features of the Archos Android tablet family. Archos knows how to pack a lot of punch into one small device.
Some say the iPad is nothing more than a recreated iPhone or iTouch. It has been pointed out that the iPad has some inherent weaknesses that are getting ignored due to its trendiness. Long tail means, not so popular or low hanging fruit. Basically some keyword phrases are more popular than others. The more popular phrases naturally produce the most searches, and therefore, the potential for bigger traffic numbers. However, because of their popularity, every Tom, Joe and Mary will be using them in their content.
This means that the competition to rank well in the search engines for the most popular keyword phrases will be pretty stiff. So, what’s an eager internet marketer to do?
Go for the low hanging fruit, of course. Yeah, this means you’ll be giving up huge chunks of potential traffic, but your odds of ranking in the top 20 for those phrases are pretty slim to begin with so, why not give yourself a better advantage?
You can dramatically increase your chances of ranking in the top 20 results by using long tail keywords.
Here’s how to look for these gems:
Lets use the keyword – mortgage.
You go to your keyword tool and type in – mortgage. You get the following results:
Mortgage rates = 9617 searches per day
Home mortgage – 1798 searches per day
Mortgage how much can I borrow = 298 searches per day
How low can 30 year fixed mortgage interest rates go = 19 searches per day
Okay, here’s how you’re going to analyze your results and quickly decide whether or not these keyword phrases are good choices.
Go to Google and do a search for each of the above keyword phrases – make sure you put them in quotation marks i.e. “mortgage rates”.
By using quotation marks, you’ll get an accurate picture of how many sites are using those exact same keyword phrases. The fewer sites using these phrases, the better your chances of ranking in the top tier of search engine results.
Here’s the results of our Google search:
“Mortgage rates” = 51,300,000 competing pages
“Home mortgage” = 43,300,000 competing pages
“Mortgage how much can I borrow” = 16,500 competing pages
“How low can 30 year fixed mortgage interest rates go” = 0 competing pages
Mortgage Rates and Home Mortgage gets thousands of searches per day, but look at your competition. Wow. There’s just no way you are going to rank well for those two phrases. The best thing to do is forget about them. Move on down the line to find some low hanging fruit.
Ideally, you want to find phrases that have under 50,000 competing pages.
Mortgage how much can I borrow has 298 searches per day and only 16,500 competing pages.
How low can 30 year fixed mortgage interest rates go has 19 searches per day and zero competing pages.
If your niche is mortgage and you put these two excellent phrases on your site, you will be in prime position to rank well. You may get less traffic for these, but these people are just as hungry for information as all those bigger traffic people. Using long tail keywords can result in getting highly targeted traffic to your site.
Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) Keywords
LSI is something that is fairly new on the scene. Google and other search engines are now taking LSI into account when ranking web pages, so this is something you need to know about.
LSI is basically a set of related keywords that are sprinkled throughout your web page content, or article, in a completely natural way. These words tell the search engines that your content has a high relevancy value to people looking for certain information.

Long tail versus short tail keywords
Since Google became so popular in 2003, keywords became part of Google’s success as they made the use of the internet so easy. Short tail keywords are very unspecific, and general. People who search for short tail keywords in Google are actually not in the buying mood. The art is to find keywords that will make you money in a niche, called long tail keywords because people search for them specifically, they look for a solution to a specific problem. Long tail keywords are golden. They are specific phrases, and the more specific you are in their search the better. When thinking about keywords, put yourself into potential buyer’s shoes, and think about keywords they would search for when searching for ‘aquarium’. For the term ‘aquarium’ you will find over 10 Million sites dealing with this topic, and half a million searches. If you would chose ‘aquarium’ as your designated keyword, then your website, blog, or article would be completely lost in the big shark pool. You would be competing against too many other sites.

In order to achieve high search engine ranking, keywords have to be chosen according to certain criteria. Google works in your best interest when you group words together that have the same semantic root (LSI), this means that you have to pull ‘theme words’ together. Under ‘aquarium’ you will find ’salt water aquarium’ and under this, ’salt water aquarium coral’, ’salt water aquarium cleaning’, ’salt water aquarium tanks’, ’salt water aquarium designs’, and so on. At the simplest, this two terms refer to the groupings that optimizers make of their list of keywords. These are based on the ability of the keywords to generate traffic from searches made about them.
Short tail keywords are search terms that can individually generate big amounts of traffic. These keywords are usually the more generic terms that are easily recognized and remembered by internet users. And since most users only bother with a few select keywords, the list is quite limited, hence the term short tail.
On the other end, long tail keywords are the terms that are still related to the subject being searched, but are not often used. This are usually the more specific search terms that are often several words long, which users find hard to recall. Long tail keywords account for the bulk of terms that are related to a subject, but often account for less than five percent of the search traffic for a certain subject. The term long tail comes from the fact that keyword density graphs show these as a long “tail” trailing behind higher ranked keywords.
This doesn’t mean, however, that it isn’t worth the time to optimize for long tail keywords. On the contrary, doing so will actually be very helpful in generating more traffic to your site. This is because their combined traffic is quite considerable. All you need is a good strategy to handle them.
The first thing that you need to do is to find these keywords. This is quite easily, since all you have to do is look at your keywords list and see what terms are generating the least amount of traffic. As have been said, these are usually the more specific terms for your subject. Another good source of long tail keywords are alternate spellings (such as long tail and long-tail), an even misspellings, of your high ranked keywords (for example long tale).
Once you have determined your long tail keywords, it’s now time to make use of them. Optimization pretty much follows the same way that you do it for your top keywords. One thing that you need to keep in mind is that you need to make the words a bit more prominent if you want them to be searched. Place them in areas that are crawled first by spiders, such as headings and page titles. Also be sure to make these prominent in your pages’ content. Don’t overdo it though, as you might actually end up with something that has a low page rank.
