Stop Treating Your Customers Like Cosumers
Stop Treating Your Customers Like Cosumers
I was having coffee recently with a brand manager from a multi-billion dollar food and beverage company who was struggling with the launch of a new brand. “We need to be entrepreneurial,” he said, “but I don’t know how. How do I start thinking like an entrepreneur?” As we continued to talk about the presumed consumer need and the demographics driving their marketing decisions, it struck me that the biggest opportunity he was missing to think like an entrepreneur was to stop treating the people who buy his product like consumers and start treating them like customers.
Customers are people we meet in the marketplace—they have a face and a name. Consumers are people we get to know in PowerPoint decks and belong to cohorts with catchy titles like “Active Annie” or “Budget-Conscious Bob.” Customers talk to you when they buy your product and give you real time, real life feedback that includes the good, the bad and the ugly. Consumers are recruited by focus group facilities and get paid to answer questions from a discussion guide. Customers are complex. Their problems are unpredictable and force you to think creatively and make changes quickly in order to earn their loyalty. Consumers are homogeneous. Their problems exist as data points and are often solved by tinkering with concept statements while sitting behind a desk. And perhaps most importantly, when you have a genuine relationship with them, customers share their time, their experiences, their ideas and their networks to become your partner in business. With consumers, we have a transactional relationship. While they may reward us with repeat purchases, it is rare that we get more from them than the exchange of cash for goods.
I understand that in the corporate world, the “customer” is the retailer and the “consumer” is the end user but when it comes to launching new products these are semantics worth changing. Few entrepreneurs I know talk about the people who buy their products as consumers. They use the word customer because they are on the front lines doing the selling. Unlike the brand manager whose consumer is objectified into demographic criteria, the entrepreneur has an intimate relationship with the people buying their goods through exchanges at the register, on forums and fielding customer service calls. This intimacy frames how they how they solve problems, it results in a rich understanding of real and urgent needs, and is often the catalyst to breakthrough ideas about how to grow the brand.
There are myriad ways in which you can get to know your customers. The key is to put yourself in situations that require a one-to-one interaction and allow you to connect with the customer in a genuine and personal way. Don’t know how to get started? Try this:
Set up a kiosk at a mall, a fair or an expo and spend a few days selling your products directly to the customer. Give them your contact information and invite them to call you with questions or comments. If they’re willing, ask if you can call them back in a few days to get feedback.
Join the customer service team. Answer the phones, interact on forums, field questions, try to solve problems and listen to what your customers are saying.
Set up a sample station at retail partner, a community center or a gym. Do more than give away product, engage in conversation and see what you can learn about the people who stop to talk to try your product.
Next time you get stuck on which levers to pull in order to grow your brand, take a moment and ask if you know who your customers are. Step out from behind the desk and go stand behind the register. Put a name and a face and a personal history to the person buying your product. Explore what it’s like to be on the front lines. You may be surprised what you learn and soon find yourself treating your consumers like customers.

X10 PDA With Android Like Features – Quick Preview With Pros, Cons, & Some Specs
Here is the X10, which like the China G2, tries to emulate Google’s Android operating system. Let’s take a closer look to see how good this phone really is.
Why Google’s Android OS can even be mentioned is that this phone attempts to recreate the feeling of Google’s OS in terms of home screen icons, and internal browsing. Quick note, this phone does not use a true Android system as its internal chipset doesn’t have processors that have enough power. That being said, the X10 does have some nice things going for it.
Spec wise, here is what the X10 sports.
It is GSM quad band, and carrier unlocked.
It has dual SIM ports with dual standby also included.
The primary material used for construction is PCP (Polycarbonate plastic).
The screen measures in at a large 3.8 inches, has 320×480 resolution, and made of TFT materials.
It weighs 95 gm.
Measurements for the phone are L114xW57xH14 mm.
Mobile internet can be accessed via EDGE/ GPRS/ WAP 2.0 and Wi-fi.
It features a 3.5mm standard earphone jack.
When needing to browse the phone or input text, touchscreen and a virtual QWERTY board are used.
Standard use will net you 46~60 hours of battery life.
Extra apps are based on the java platform, and the phone includes pre installed ones as well as letting new ones be downloaded and installed.
A MP3/ MP4 player combo, a camera with 1.9MP plus a camcorder, an eBook reader, an analog TV, Bluetooth with A2DP, internet chat programs, and a FM radio are its largest media offerings.
Here are a few pros and cons the X10 includes.
Pros
Though fake, the Android like system does permit some customization options in regards to the home menu screen.
With such a large screen (3.8 inches) everything comes in nice and large, and the colors are both bright and sharp.
Its pre installed java apps work very well, and include some very nice ones such as Google maps and Snaptu.
Online syncing for your phonebook, calendar, and your tasks is available.
Internet came in strong and clear.
Non proprietary earphone jacks that are 3.5mm are not that common and are nice to have.
Cons
Resembling but not actually being an Android phone is a off putting if you are expecting typical performance from an Android based phone.
Though able to access email, I found its email client not very user friendly.
Though not a Android phone, the X10 stands pretty well on its own accord if you don’t think of it a smartphone.

Is Buying Unlocked Blackberry Pearl Like Buying A House?
Is Buying Unlocked Blackberry Pearl Like Buying A House?
There is such a thing as locked cell phone and it happens because phone network providers device that mechanism against their competitors.
There are two major communication systems used for mobile phones: CDMA and GSM. CDMA is a coded response system that ties a phone and its user together to a particular system and to a particular number. CDMA is more popular system in the United States.
GSM, which stands for Global System for Mobile Communication, is the common standard in more than 200 other countries around the World and is becoming popular also in the United States. GSM cell phone uses a SIM card to communicate with a particular network. The network provider has the option to lock the phone so that it will not respond to a SIM card from an alternate provider.
Network providers do this obviously for competitive purposes, but many users complained about this seemingly unfair practice. When an individual purchases the cell phone, he should have the freedom to change the SIM card and use the unit on any network that he prefers. This provides him the power to also use the same phone if he travels, especially in other countries without paying expensive roaming charges.
Unlocking a cell phone is not impossible but sometimes the task at hand is too daunting to do. And why bother with all the hassle when there are a lot of available unlocked cell phones in the market? Good thing that it includes the favorite Blackberry Pearl units.
If you are still in the process of buying a Blackberry Pearl cell phone, prevention is certainly better than cure. What is even so irresistible about it is that you can buy an unlocked Blackberry Pearl phone at a much discounted price.
The hard truth of the mobile phone business is that there is tremendous competition between various phone service providers. Hence, phone companies are most likely to lock you into using their service. When you own an unlocked Blackberry Pearl phone, you have the capability to choose your own service, the stuff you need and the stuff that you just want.
Compared to CDMA phones, GSM phones are easier to unlock. But then again, in either case, buying an unlocked Blackberry Pearl phone is more sensible than purchasing a phone and then going through the problem of unlocking it later. So to make the equation much simpler: buying unlocked Blackberry Pearl phones is the only way. But before you take out cash from your pocket, ask the seller and make sure that they truly understand what it is you are asking of them about Blackberry Pearl.
Once you have your unlocked Blackberry Pearl, it is an easy matter already to determine if it is truly unlocked. All you need to do is try it out and the Blackberry Pearl phone will tell you its status. If it is unlocked you will be able to use the Blackberry Pearl to connect with whatever service you wish to use.
Social Entrepreneurship & Social Media Marketing Go Together, Like Peanut Butter & Jelly
Social Entrepreneurship & Social Media Marketing Go Together, Like Peanut Butter & Jelly
By Melissa S. Barker
Why have so many people risked everything to undertake new ventures, when over half of all new businesses fail within five years? Until the late 20th Century, the answer was simple–the lure of riches and being your own boss. However, a new breed of social entrepreneur is combining societal and environment concerns with wealth creation. Today, more and more people are finding innovative ways to make capitalism work for them, their communities, and the environment.
Many social entrepreneurs still dream of making money and being their own bosses by forming traditional sole proprietorships or corporations, while others join together in nonprofit cooperatives. Nonetheless, they are all united by a single purpose—to improve the world, either through environmental or societal advances. Despite the altruistic goals, social entrepreneurs are just as driven and ambitious as conventional businesspeople to deliver groundbreaking solutions.
For example, social entrepreneurs build low cost shelters for the poor from recyclable materials, develop inexpensive solutions to widespread health problems, create water cleaning systems for drought-stricken areas, bring educational resources to remote regions, promote the arts to the underprivileged, and develop efficient means to transport freight and people over rugged terrain.
Social entrepreneurship success stories abound, such as Wendy Kopp, who launched, Teach for America, a highly successful movement to eliminate educational inequity in the nation by signing up the most promising college graduates to teach in low income communities. Since 1989, Teach for America has recruited, trained, and supported over 17,000 recent graduates in teaching for two years in economically depressed districts.
Mimi Silbert, founded Delancey Street, one of the foremost residential self-help organizations in the country, working with everyone from the illiterate and homeless to junkies and ex-convicts. Delancey Street equips those who have hit bottom with marketable skills in just six months. The organization is financially self-sufficient, with most of its funding coming from the businesses founded by Delancey Street graduates, such as moving companies, restaurants, and delivery services.
Although there is no single path to becoming a successful social entrepreneur, the following five steps provide a roadmap that can markedly boost your odds of success:
1. Find a cause that inspires and holds a profitable solution
The first, and perhaps the most important, step to becoming a successful social entrepreneur is to identify an environmental or social ill that motivates you to act. However, that’s just half of the challenge; the other half is to find a profitable solution to the problem. Even nonprofit organizations must survive financially, so you must secure an ongoing means to fund your venture. It is worth noting that government grants come and go, while revenues from selling products and services tend to be a more consist source of money.
2. Craft a solid business plan
Whatever form of social entrepreneurship you wish to pursue, certain elements must be present for it to succeed. Research show tat poor planning and insufficient financing are the two major reasons businesses fail. Fortunately, creating a well researched and carefully thought out business plan can go a long way to ensuring success. Creating a business plan forces you to consider your organization’s fundamental mission and its objectives, as well as whom you want to serve, their unmet needs, and how to organize your marketing mix to satisfy those needs. In addition, a good business plan provides operational details, financial forecasts, and spells out how to monitor performance and adjust course accordingly.
3. Securing financing
Without question, the most significant challenge a social entrepreneur faces is finding the necessary funding to launch and sustain a new enterprise. In addition to traditional equity and lending sources, social entrepreneurs can seek assistance from the following organizations:
Ashoka provides funding and support services to social entrepreneurs Echoing Green offers seed capital and support to entrepreneurs with pioneering ideas to bring about social change. Skoll Foundation invests with social entrepreneurs primarily through its Skoll Awards for Entrepreneurship and connects them with key people and resources that can advance their causes. Tides Foundation partners with social entrepreneurs to promote economic, social, environmental progress through a variety of efforts, including fiscal sponsorship. Schwab Foundation identifies, connects, works with selected companies to advance specific social entrepreneurial initiatives.
4. Be smart in implementing your plan
Since social entrepreneurs are especially cash-strapped, with little or no money to finance their operations, marketing, and delivery of services, they must exploit the least expensive and most effective strategies and tactics. Most importantly, social entrepreneurs must efficiently find the people and communities they seek to serve and identify their unmet needs.
This is where social media marketing comes into play. Social media marketing enables organizations to identify and interact with their constituencies, access opinions, gather valuable feedback, and influence views about the organization and its offerings. Social media platforms include everything from blogs and video sharing to social networking and social bookmarking.
To use these freely available social media platforms wisely, social entrepreneurs have to decide which platforms are best suited for their purposes and how to use them productively. This means crafting a social media marketing campaign, which lays out clear measurable goals, investing the time to become familiar with the platforms and participants, creating compelling content, monitoring campaign results, and making the necessary adjustments to succeed.
Done right, social media marketing provides a cost-effective way for social entrepreneurs to make contacts, find support, influence constituencies, form collaborative efforts, as well as establish an image of trustworthiness, integrity, and dependability.
5. Monitor for success
The focus of social entrepreneurship, whether for-profit or not, is social change. Hence, the evaluation process should assess the progress made in achieving specific environmental or societal improvements. Clear and well-defined goals greatly simplify measuring the impact of a program on its intended eco-system or recipients.
In addition, it seems appropriate to evaluate the leadership performance of the social entrepreneur. After all, that individual is at the heart of social entrepreneurship, acting as the proponent, champion, and steward of a driving vision to improve the environment or society. Thus, assessing the social entrepreneur’s leadership, management, and spokesperson capabilities is essential to ensure the sustainability and ultimate success of the enterprise.
Finally, as with any startup, the economic performance of the organization should be analyzed using the same methodologies applied to traditional for-profit businesses. Although profit can be a secondary or even nonexistent consideration for some social entrepreneurs, every enterprise must receive or generate sufficient funds to survive, if not thrive.

Five Reasons Marketing a Small Business is Like Playing Football
Five Reasons Marketing a Small Business is Like Playing Football
Marketing a small business is one of the most difficult activities any entrepreneur will face. It’s full of challenges and obstacles that demand preparation, dedication and determination to win the game. It’s just like playing football – success will ultimately be determined by your commitment to win and your desire to compete.
Running a business is a lot like playing an intense game of football. Essentially, both are organized chaos with competitors who aim to prevent you from gain ground and scoring points. In business, you win the game by scoring mores sales than your competitors rather making touchdowns or field goals. The one who become the champion of your industry is the company with the best marketing which attracts the most clients or customers.
There are five key similarities between marketing and football that every business must implement if they want to become champions:
1. Preparation and Planning
Any successful football coach will tell you that preparation and planning is the key to winning. It’s not the will to win, but the willingness to prepare to win that is important. Countless hours go into scouting opponents, developing plays and practicing for specific situations before the game is ever played.
As a business owner, you must also invest the time to research and planning. The only way for you to create competitive advantage is to understand your market, know your competitors, and create a plan that will score consistent sales. This begins with committing to working on your marketing every day. By dedicating an hour each day to marketing your business you’ll create momentum that your competitors can’t stop.
2. Aggressiveness
It’s simple – you can’t compete if you don’t play. Marketing your business demands that you get in the game and take on your toughest competitors. To achieve victory you must be aggressive and execute marketing plays which positions your company as the best choice, lowest risk option to fill a need or solve their problem.
Being aggressive is a positive, go-for-it attitude. It’s not about being out of control and acting recklessly with your marketing dollars. Instead, it’s about being focused and taking action before your competitors have a chance to beat you.
I tell my football players, “Be the hammer, not the nail.” This means you deliver the hit and not take it. During a football game the more aggressive team wins, just like in business.
3. Positioning
Football is a game of exploiting gaps in the defense to advance the ball down the field and across the goal line to score. Marketing your business is the same – you must find a gap in the market that is not being filled with a product or service that people are looking for. When you have an offer which none of your competitors can match you position company as the obvious choice.
You’ll score more sales and become a champion quicker by finding a gap in the market that is currently unfilled and not crowded with competitors. Creating plays which have an easy path to a score is the goal of every football coach. Your goal as an entrepreneur is to score a sale every time you execute a marketing play. Understanding the value and strategy of positioning is the best way to achieve it.
4. Play Calling
In football, calling the right offensive play in the right situation against the right defense becomes the highlight which is shown on SportsCenter over and over again. When marketing your business the offer that attracts a huge response and generates massive sales is very similar in stature.
A marketing play is any advertisement, promotion or communication you execute to get a prospect to take action. Calling the right marketing play that meshes with your audience is essential to your success. However, this takes time, testing and persistence. Most marketers give up after their first marketing play fails. Entrepreneurs become champions in their industry because they persistently try new marketing plays until they find the ones that perform and score consistently.
Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi said, “Perfection is not attainable. But if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.” Marketing champions are the ones who never stop chasing perfection no matter how big the challenge.
5. Consistent Scoring
An old football coach once told me, “It’s hard to win if you don’t score!”
In business in scoring a sale is not only important but the required to survive. Without people buying what you offer, you will soon be out of business. All of your business activities should be in support of creating sales. Accounting, production, engineering, distribution and any other area of your business must help to create the conditions to make more sales.
Unfortunately, most business cut marketing when business slows down. This is a big mistake! No other activity in your business can increase your sales except for marketing. This requires commitment to the marketing process and understanding how to play the game. Like football, reaching a sale is usually a sequence of steps that gets you closer to the goal line and the score – not a one shot “Hail Mary” pass. By focusing all aspects of your business as part of marketing you will no doubt become the champion in your industry.
These five keys are a few of the essential building blocks of creating winning marketing. However, the biggest point of leverage any business owner can have their marketing attitude. Are you marketing offensively or defensively? Are you the aggressor or accepting what the competition dictates? How you approach your marketing is the single biggest determining factor of your success.

Tablets may not grow like netbooks have in the last couple of years
Tablets may not grow like netbooks have in the last couple of years. Microsoft began trying to promote tablets years ago. Intel’s app store, the AppUp Center, is designed for a range of devices using Atom CPUs, including netbooks and smartphones as well as tablets.
“The strong first quarter builds on the fourth quarter rebound and shows rising confidence in the PC supply chain and commercial client base, along with persistent demand from consumers,” said Loren Loverde, a vice president at IDC,in a statement. “The commercial gains are a cornerstone of a market rebound that we’ve been expecting and are now seeing in the data. Despite continued strengthening of commercial demand and solid consumer and emerging market results, year-on-year growth is likely to slow in coming quarters as year-ago comparisons get more difficult.”
In the months after the release of Windows 7, Microsoft also dealt with complaints of poor battery life for some laptops upgraded to the operating system, with a percentage of users reporting a drastically reduced charge. In a Feb. 8 posting on the Engineering Windows 7 blog, Windows president Steven Sinofsky suggested that the fault ultimately lay in the laptop batteries themselves, not anything having to do with Windows 7.
To cut down on the time and effort you spend on each sale, you may want to consider going to a handful of Websites cropping up that serve as a broker for sales of used tech.
Sites such as Gazelle and BuyMyTronics will let you immediately get a price quote on (most) of your used stuff. Just go to the site, pick your device from the menu, and fill out a few details such as the device’s condition and included equipment (manuals, cables, and so on), and you’ll get an estimate.
“The U.S. PC market exhibited encouraging signs of recovery in the first quarter,” said Andrew Hanson, a research analyst with IDC, in a statement. “While part of this growth is a correction from a dismal 1Q 09,some of it was driven by new PC refresh projects in the commercial markets. This is in addition to ongoing consumer appetite for more mobile devices as price points remain attractive and the multi-device per user environment expands.”
That’s one of the issues with refurbs. You might get a great deal, but you might also buy a headache if the device is not as advertised. At least you can take comfort in the fact that manufacturer refurbs are sold with warranties, so if there’s a problem with it, you will eventually get a working unit. You’ll be out some time, but you’ll save money.
And sometimes refurbs can be superior to new items. After sending a new Seagate hard drive with a vibration problem back to the store, only to get another wobbler, I sent the drive directly to the manufacturer. Seagate sent me a refurb, which was quiet, fast, and has been working like a champ in my MacBook(MacBook Pro 15″ Batteries) for a year. As I said, I like the personal touch I know I get from refurbs.
Unless, that is, your itinerary includes the beach, where the bright light largely renders the screen unreadable, and where concerns about thieves, sunblock and sand will probably outweigh any benefits the iPad might bring. So if you’re heading for the sand and surf, make sure you have something else to brag about.
“I tried in excess for seven hours and went to any forum I could that I thought would be helpful,” that administrator continued. “I made sure that I did local loads for printer drivers and then went looking for network devices. I also tried various host/server scenarios back and forth with older to newer OS’s acting as the server; still no sharing!”
When it comes down to which company makes a better business notebook, I think HP(HP NX7400 Battery) and Lenovo both offer exceptional products. Although in the end, it’s about the look and feel you prefer. The HP EliteBook series offers a more refined brushed-metal appearance, while the ThinkPad line has a more rugged rubberized-paint old school-look. Overall, both notebooks deserve equal consideration if you’re looking to buy a 12-inch business notebook.

Apps The Way I Like It
Apps The Way I Like It
With competition in the mobile phone market growing daily, there are new handsets hitting the shelves on an almost weekly basis. With the main brands competing on camera resolution, screen size, OLED integration and myriad other small factors it can be a serious challenge to pinpoint the handset most suited to your needs. Sidestepping this minefield for the time being there is a way in which you can ensure that at least one aspect of your phone is up to date in the areas which matter to you most: through apps.
Apps allow the user to install additional functions, games and programmes to their handset with minimal effort and very often for absolutely free. So before you look into which specific piece of hardware is most suitable it is worth considering which software platform most matches your requirements. At present there are four main operating system-native platforms at the forefront of the field:
App Store
Apple pioneered the app concept and advertise this extensively, established in July 2008 the App Store service offers more than 140,000 different apps and has facilitated in the region of 3 billion downloads. Designed predominantly for the iPhone, it also caters for Apple’s iPod Touch, and iPad and is based around the popular iTunes format.
Android Market
Developed by web-giants Google and launched in October 2008, this application store built into the Android operating system is growing rapidly and hotly tipped to usurp App Store in the near future. With around 40,000 apps available and near seamless integration into the operating system it is tied to, it offers a very intuitive experience and generally has more free apps than it’s competitors due to the ease with which third party developers can produce software and distribute through the Android Market portal.
OVI Store
Nokia’s OVI is the brand under which the Finnish mobile phone masters operate their internet services. Initially OVI served mostly PC based applications and acted as a competitor to Apple’s iTunes and Google Maps. In May 2009 it made the leap into providing mobile phone apps and now offers more than 2500 (often 3rd party developed) handset applications through OVI Store alongside a mobile based version of their map software. By August 2009 OVI Store had been the conduit for 10 million software downloads.
Windows Marketplace for Mobile
Established in October 2009, this digital distribution platform for Windows Mobile initially served only Windows Mobile 6.5 operated handsets and personal computers but has since been tailored to operate within earlier 6.x editions. Although only offering 376 unique apps in November 2009 the platform is growing in popularity and available applications, particularly in the light of the imminent release of the Windows Mobile 7 operating system.
Other handset manufacturers and mobile phone operating system developers have either launched their own apps platforms or have them in the pipeline. App Catalog by Palm for instance was launched in June 2009 catering for Palm’s range handheld devices. It’s hard to see what the future holds for app download systems, but there is much excitement about software such as Google Android, which is non-manufacturer specific hence has the potential to become a more universal platform in the mobile computing world.

Motion’s new C5v and F5v include a stylus, as touch only tablets like the iPad aren’t quite business ready
Motion Computing has launched what it claimed are the industry’s first slate PCs built on Intel’s Core i5 and Core i7 mobile processors.
Intel’s high-end processors appear in two of Motion’s tablets: the Motion C5v, which is aimed at the medical profession, and the F5v, a more general-purpose slate aimed at the retail, engineering and utilities industries.(HP laptop battery)
Motion claims the new processors boost both the performance and the battery life of the ruggedised tablets, which both sport a 10.4in TFT touchscreen. Battery life is typically 4.5 hours, according to Motion, although both slates have hot-swappable battery bays that mean a remote worker can keep running all day with two battery packs.
The addition of Intel’s vPro technology also allows IT departments to support tablets being used remotely in the field and lock down data stored on stolen or lost devices.
Motion includes a stylus with both models, claiming that the finger-only operation of consumer tablets such as the iPad isn’t yet suitable for the business environment. Businesses still require the finesse of pen operation for applications such as signature capture, drawing and annotating documents, according to Nigel Owens, vice president of worldwide sales at Motion.(dell laptop battery)
One traditionally consumer feature that has made its way into the tablets, however, is front-facing cameras, with Owens claiming that businesses are increasingly turning to video conferencing with remote workers.(compaq laptop battery)
An optional smartcard reader is also introduced for the first time on the C5v, following a direct request from IT departments in the NHS, according to Owens.
The tablets will be available immediately from Motion resellers.
