I received a Kindle DX as a gift and that had been waiting to get one for some time. I had four in as many weeks in my attempts to find one that I was satisfied and could not get the quality I expect for a device of this price. One thing to note is that if you request a replacement from Amazon that will try to accommodate your request with a machine used. If I spend almost $ 500 on a brand new machine and I am pleased with it I expect to be replaced with another new car, not a renewed. Great customer service failure is (unusual for the normally stellar service Amazon).

Here are the pros and cons:

Pro:
1. Excellent system for content delivery. It could not be easier to find and download books and newspapers for the Kindle. Amazon has done a great job of organizing and prices.
2. Breadth and depth of content. Amazon has a large selection of reading material.
3. e-ink is extremely easy on the eyes. Lacks the appeal of color screens but lasts for a week between charges and you can read for hours without eyestrain.
4. Lightweight and thin – even the largest Kindle DX does not add much weight to the bag.

Cons:
1. The construction quality is pathetic for a device close to $ 500. Rattle, line buttons and a plastic case with cheap sentiment. Reading is also a tactile experience and the Kindle DX fails miserably to deliver in this regard.

2. Everything is on the right side of the device. At least put a previous page button on the left side belongs logically (as the best definition of Kindle 2).

3. The main problem with this device is the way the buttons work. My wife and I have both Kindle DX and when we are both reading silently all you hear is click, click, click …. drives me crazy. This should be silent in operation! The device feels and works like something from 1990, not 2010.

4. All the “experimental” features are practically useless, especially those related web. Other than a small website based on text hangs or fails to load.

5. No Epub format. This seems to be heading for the status of the industry standard as Amazon better than the updated firmware or could miss the boat. The initial investment is compared with purchases moderately higher. I know that if they invest in content that will be compatible with the technology of the future of my choice.

6. No sharing. For centuries people have visited libraries and lent books to each other. That’s what people do with books. Read, recommend, render. There will still buy books, but it would be nice to lend and borrow from time to time.

I had high hopes for this device and tried several times to get what I could live. If it was $ 150 I could overlook the shortcomings, but at almost $ 500 I expect to be well built, well designed and relatively future.

I love Amazon and buy or sell a lot of stuff here so this is not an anti-Amazon review by any means, I just think this is a very disappointing product.
