Open Video, Firefox, HTML 5 and The Future of Everything

Open Video, Firefox, HTML 5 and The Future of Everything

For years the options for playing a video or audio in a Web page (well, the decent options) were limited: download a plug-in for Adobe Flash or Apple QuickTime, or don’t watch/listen at all.  Use tools provided by a couple of corporate giants or don’t play.  Want to walk a different path than one laid out by these giants of industry?  Sorry,  the giants know what’s best for you … or at least that’s what they say.

Now,  finally,  in an time when half the silly links your friends are sending you are to gems such as videos of guys getting hit in the groin,  a new option is emerging.

To be fair, there are a couple of other alternatives.  RealPlayer was in the mix for a while,  but was widely known for being an obnoxious piece of software that nobody really wanted on their computer,  and,  although it’s still around, it’s fallen from favor and is far from the top of the online video player plug-in list.  More recently,  one of the software world’s great titans,  Microsoft,  has gotten a bit of traction promoting its Silverlight technology, which was built as a head-on competitor to Adobe’s Flash.

Notice a common theme?  If you said,  “Each one of these options is being offered by an entity with revenues that rival the GDPs of most small island nations” , then we’re on the same page.  If you also wondered if their motives are altruistic or born of self-interest, then not only are we on the same page, we’re on the same paragraph.  Luckily, we don’t even have to feel funny about our cynical musings,  because we’re in good company … quite a few distinguished members of the open source community,  savior of all that is good on the Internet,  have been thinking along the same lines.

If you’re a Firefox user and you’ve recently upgraded your browser, you may have noticed a note on the “what’s new” page stating that your sexy, newly updated browser supports “open video formats.”  This is code for “now people can build web pages for you that contain video,  require no plugins,  don’t require the web page creator to pay for special software to encode the video, and can be put up with way less effort than the proprietary stuff.”

All this bodes well not only for our penchant for guy-getting-kicked-in-the-groin videos, and for Web innovation in general.  Bold claims?  Here are some points you should know about “how”, “why” and “who” that,  I hope, will convince you:

Open Source Innovation:  The video format being supported when most people talk about “open video” goes by the curious name of Ogg. I know,  it sounds like what a couple of nice cave people might name their first child,  but the technology is quite the opposite of pre-historic.  The video and audio “layers” that can tag along with the Ogg file format (called Theora and Vorbis,  respectively … props to the folks naming this stuff!) are,  along with Ogg itself,  are all completely open.  Patent-free,  royalty free,  and open to anybody who wants to see or even contribute to the guts under the hood.  Once adopted by many contributors,  as Ogg has been,  this sort of openness leads to rapid innovation.  Case in point: Ogg used to be slower/bigger than the proprietary formats that dominated the online video world,  but now, thanks to developer contributions,  it’s at least as fast/small as the closed formats,  if not a tad better in both areas.

The Best Browser: Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer?

It all started with Nexus in 1991, the first worldwide web interface. That year marked the beginning of the browser war. Just type in ‘list of browsers’ in Google and you can find at least 50 web browsers to choose from. This ‘storm’ of applications just to access the ‘cloud’ is mind boggling but one doesn’t have to find out which three browsers fight for the throne every month or so with there newer versions, add-ons, better UIs and what not. You can just keep switching from one to the other every week just for the fun of it. Google’s Chrome has finally beaten Apple’s hyped up Safari which was, honestly, good for nothing. It demanded more memory, wasn’t much of a fast browser and the add-ons made the browser more difficult to handle instead of tweaking it up.There are 3 main aspects through which one can judge, which browser is the one for them; security, privacy and performance. The Big three, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome will be discussed under these factors.SecurityIt is a very basic but important issue. You wouldn’t want be shopping online without proper security of course. There are two main kinds of threats that need to be attended to by any web browser; Phishing and Malware.Phishing refers to high – tech security threats referring to websites that trick the users into providing personal, financial and password information. Phishing sites cannot be easily detected as they look the same as the usually trusted websites like banks and mortgage companies.Malware are a kind of virus that infiltrate computers without the user’s consent and can retrieve vital information from it. The Big 3 have latest security technology for tackling these issues. IE is equipped with ‘Phishing Filter’ and ‘Malware Protection’ and Firefox is equipped with their equivalents. Saving the best for last, Chrome uses ‘sandboxing’ technology which actually is quite genius. The term ‘sandbox’ is used by developers which means running operations in isolation. Chrome uses this technique by limiting access of the browser operations within, meaning nothing can infiltrate the user’s computer as the browser treats itself in a completely isolated environment.PrivacyThis one is a tie. ‘InPrivate’ for IE, ‘Private’ for Firefox and ‘Incognito’ for Chrome let you use the browser without saving anything on the hard drive let it be passwords, history, cookies or cache. The only difference here is the fancy names they use. These features can be activated quite easily and can be found often under the ‘Tools’ menu.PerformanceThe humorous ‘legendary’ claims made by Microsoft in their infamous ‘browser comparison chart’ [can be found on their website] comparing the Big 3 are quite bogus but one has to admit what they said in the performance section, ‘knowing the top speed of a car doesn’t tell you how fast you can drive in rush hour’, is sadly true. The Big 3 are almost the same in performance if u test them through YouTube and time them until they load a video. So, the answer to the question, ‘which browser is the best?’ depends on you! If you like the user interface to be customized to your favorite rock band or your dream car, Chrome is the one for you, or if you like seeing the boring ‘E’ icon in blue all the time, go for IE. For tech savvies who want everything to be the way they want it to be, the Firefox add-ons do it for them.

Google Chrome Vs Mozilla Firefox

The hype hasn’t even settled on Google Chrome’s release and already Mozilla is reeling under its influence. Google claims that Chrome is the fastest internet browser than anything currently available on the world wide web. Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier. As of now it supports almost 43 languages and it automatically detects your language. For now, Google Chrome seems to be the fastest internet browser in the online industry. In response to this Mozilla is gearing up with Firefox 3.1 which the company claims will be faster than anything Google can muster with Chrome. In February 2008 Mozilla announced that they had reached 500 million downloads of Firefox, and 150 million active users.Let’s see how many people switch to Google Chrome and how many stick to the usual Mozilla Firefox.Try both the browsers you will easily make out the difference. With the competition heating up between the two giants its the common internet users who can look forward to benefiting the most from this.

Google chrome is running v8, an open source javascript engine which is written in C++ whereas Mozilla will be using TraceMonkey, an evolution of Firefox’s SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine for Firefox 3.1Performance wise Tracemonkey was found to be better than Chrome beta.In Firefox if one tab crashes we can see its impact on other tabs but its not the same in case of Google Chrome. Google Chromes each tab is an independent process. If one tab crashes there won’t be any effect on the other tabs. Every tab is on its own due to which memory management becomes very easier, eradicates the reasons for memory seepage.

Top 3 Firefox Add-ons for SEO Campaigns

The Mozilla Firefox has been one of the most widely used internet browser in the world competing with some of the most popular such as Internet Explorer and Safari. Though it was once as dormant as a sleeping dragon, Mozilla Firefox became the most popular web browser mainly because of its wide uses.

Mozilla Firefox does lack many features found in other browsers, but in an effort to combat interface bloat, developers made it to allow the browser to be shipped as a small, pared-down core which makes it customizable to meet individual users’ needs or interest.

The developers thought that instead of providing all features in the standard distribution; why not rely on the extension system to allow users to modify the browser according to their own preferences. SEO is one of the many that benefited on this. Today, there are a lot of extensions and add-ons for Mozilla Firefox that is made specifically for the purpose of SEO and internet marketing.
