The Table PC is Finally Making It

A tablet PC is a light weight slate shaped hand-held computer or a slim note book PC. The idea is to replace the traditional pen and notebook with a tablet PC and stylus or digital pen. Historically the tablet was used by the Egyptians to write on clay tablets with a writing stick. In the present day the clay tablet has been replaced with a screen and the writing stick with a stylus. The tablet PC may be considered the pen and notebook of the future. They typically weigh around 2-3 pounds and their main feature is portability. The idea of a tablet PC was floated by Alan Kay of Xerox but was a commercial failure until now, when the prices have fallen down and it is expected that the prices will fall in future. The first widely sold Tablet PC was Newton of Apple Computers.

The hardware consists of a slim touch screen, stylus, optional wireless keyboard and mouse. In this type of computers the data input is not through the traditional mouse and keyboard but through a stylus or a virtual keyboard on the screen. It also has the facility of data input through wireless keyboard and mouse. The stylus is used to write directly/tap on the screen or fingers are used to input data through the touch screen. There is a magnetic field over the screen which interacts with the stylus electronics, hence the user can rest his hands on the screen without distorting the image and only stylus movement affects the screen. They come in various sizes like 8.5 inch, 10 inch and 14 inch.

There are different types of tablet PCs like slates, convertibles and hybrids. Slates consist of just the screen and the stylus. If a slate is attached with a keyboard it is called a convertible. Typically the keyboard is attached with a single joint and it folds/opens onto the screen. The Hybrid has a detachable keyboard so that it can be used both as a slate or a convertible.

Tablet PCs come with resident softwares like handwriting recognition software, speech recognition software, shorthand entry software, virtual keyboard etc,.

There are various advantages like portability, users who are not comfortable with keyboards find stylus more friendly, they do not interrupt line of sight as they are kept on the table and are helpful in meetings and are handheld so can be used in giving presentation while standing up. The disadvantages of Tablet PCs have been cost till now but since the prices have fallen and are falling, hence is not a constraint anymore.

Various companies like Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba Fujitsu, HP, Gateway, Compaq, Motion, NEC etc are manufacturing Tablet PCs.

Are they future proof?Till recent years the Tablet PC was a commercial failure but with the advances in battery technology, handwriting recognition software, wireless internet access, larger memory, better screen resolution they are being accepted as commercially viable option. Many popular science fiction movies portray the use of Tablet PCs.  Tablet PCs are bound to replace the notebook & pen and future books, magazines, newspapers.

Twitter Ads Finally Set To Make Public Debut

It has been a long awaited and long talked about prospect but it looks like Twitter is finally letting us all know at least one way that they plan to make money. To literally no one’s surprise it will be through ads that Twitter calls “Promoted Tweets”.

The New York Times reports

Twitter will unveil on Tuesday a much-anticipated plan for making money from advertising, finally answering the question of how the company expects to turn its exponential growth into revenue.

The advertising program, which Twitter calls Promoted Tweets, will show up when Twitter users search for keywords that the advertisers have bought to link to their ads. Later, Twitter plans to show promoted posts in the stream of Twitter posts, based on how relevant they might be to a particular user.

Twitter has had its feet to the fire for quite some time as to what they would do to mine their millions of users for the gold that they represent to advertisers. This program is the first phase of that process.

John Batelle offers some interesting insights into this big development. His reaction to the same quote from the NYT is

The news is not so much that Twitter will show sponsored tweets in search results – after all, we’re pretty used to that, thanks to AdWords. The real news is the second part: Twitter will include sponsored tweets in the “the stream of Twitter posts, based on how relevant they might be to a particular user.”

Regardless of where Twitter users consumer their Twitter feeds, the reality is this: Twitter’s new ad platform will mark the first time, ever, that users of the service will see a tweet from someone they have not explicitly decided to follow.

This will certainly attract every opinion from every person on the planet. Some will predict the demise of Twitter as a useful tool. Some will hail Twitter for finally wanting to be a real business. Others who are new to Twitter will not know that there ever was a time where Twitter was ad free. In other words, we are at the announcement stage of what is likely to become a long and closely monitored (meaning picked to shreds) process. To make the definitive statement on if this new platform will be the new AdWords is premature at best and foolish at worst.

As for my opinion. Well, I am not an influencer, per se, but I am a Twitter user. As a result I will be the target for these ads. As a result, my biggest question is can Twitter deliver on its desire to deliver the most relevant ad at the most appropriate time? Pretty simple. If I start to see ads for all kinds of junk with no apparent relevance to my Twitter use then I will be aggravated. Will it mean that I leave Twitter? Not likely. My hope is that they can do a better job than Facebook does and at least offer some variety of ads.

So let’s look at how these ads will work for now.

When a Twitter user searches for a word an advertiser bought, the promoted message will show up at the top of the results, even if it was written much earlier. The posts say they are promoted by the company in small type, and when someone rolls over a promoted post with a cursor, it turns yellow.

Note that for now these ads will appear following a Twitter search on the Twitter site. These two features alone will limit just who sees any ads from the onset.

Twitter will measure what it calls resonance, which takes into account nine factors, including the number of people who saw the post, the number of people who replied to it or passed it on to their followers, and the number of people who clicked on links.

If a post does not reach a certain resonance score, Twitter will no longer show it as a promoted post. That means that the company will not have to pay for it, and users will not see ads they do not find useful, Dick Costolo, Twitter’s Chief Operating Officer said

It’s when the ads move into a Twitter stream and reach third party apps that the real program will be unveiled.

In the next phase of Twitter’s revenue plan, it will show promoted posts in a user’s Twitter stream, even if a user did not perform a search and does not follow the advertiser.

For example, if someone has been following people who write about travel, they could see a promoted post from Virgin America on holiday fare discounts.

Finally, Twitter Search to Rank Tweets by Popularity

Twitter is often touted as the search engine to tell you what’s happening this minute.  While it is incredible to find out what is trending across the twitterverse at any given moment it is disappointing to find that tweets from the historical past (*ahem*..5 to 7 days ago) are no longer available in search results!

That has finally changed!

This past Friday Twitter API Announcements released information that it was working on a beta project to start ranking “the most popular tweets for a query, rather than only the most recent tweets”!  What this means is that Twitter search is starting to function more like a real search engine where authority (popularity) of a tweet is as important as recency!

Here’s an example to drill my point home.  Earlier this year Sun CEO, Jonanthan Schwartz (@OpenJonathan) created a lot of buzz by using a #haiku to announce his resignation on Twitter.

For someone searching for relevant or buzzworthy information on Jonathan Schwartz in general you’ll probably get his most recent tweets or @replies to him.  However, if you did a specific search for his resignation tweet using multiple search queries you get nothing!  Nada!

A similar search query on Google, on the other hand, yields the results below, answering my question what about Jonathan Schwartz has been most relevent or popular on Twitter, up to this minute or at any time.

Twitter has yet to divulge details of what is considered a popular tweet.  It might be number of retweets, it could be inbound links to a tweet from powerful blogs, it could be a combination of such things.  The key thing to note is this is a huge step towards making social search work better!

People are spending 7 hours a day on Facebook, and generating upwards of 600 tweets per second on Twitter .  In fact, Facebook has dethroned Yahoo! as the second largest site and overtaken Google in traffic growth.  Businesses must social-media-optimize themselves to be found in these social networks for relevant keywords.

In Twitter search’s current incarnation, all of the karma companies have acquired for creating buzz worthy tweets are lost.  However, with this small tweak in their API, we are a step closer to being social media optimized and found online for past efforts.

Finally, The Nokia N900 On O2 Is Released

If you are a dedicated Nokia fan and are looking for the latest piece of mobile technology then the Nokia N900 will suit well, there are still a couple more networks to pick up this new smart phone so even more tariffs will be on offer in the future if you cannot find a suitable one from the existing networks.

HTC also have a model which matches up to the Nokia N900, the HTC HD2 offers the largest touch screen currently available on any mobile phone currently available at 4.3 inches, also running on a 1GHz processor with a 5.0 mega pixel camera the HD2 is a fast and powerful handset.

Sony Ericsson have a few models on the market which don’t quite match up to the powerful N900, the new Satio which has be plagued with software problems offers a higher resolution camera at 12.1 mega pixels but the forthcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is probably the best alternative which will be the first Android phone from the manufacturer.

Another definite competitor to the Nokia N900 has to be the latest Google Nexus One handset, again offering a 5MP camera but lacks the physical Qwerty keyboard, however this is a powerful device running on the latest Android 2.1 operating system.

As mentioned, the top-end models from other manufacturers also make for good alternatives, the biggest competitor at present has to be the Motorola Milestone which offers a similar form factor by having a slide out Qwerty keyboard and also a 5.0 mega pixel camera although this is an Android 2.0 phone with lots of Google support.

The Nokia N900 is by far the most advanced handset to be released by the manufacturer to date and has little competition apart from within its own ranks and that of the flagshiop models from other manufacturers. These include the Nokia N97 Mini which is a ‘lighter’ version of the original N97 model making it a more pocket friendly device and the recently launched Nokia X6 which offers the same 3.2 inch touch screen as the N97 mini but is a more music focused mobile phone.

The main features of the new N900 include a 5.0 mega pixel camera with advanced features and video recording capabilities, a large 3.5 inch high resolution touch screen and a handy slide out Qwerty keyboard for an alternative to the on-screen Qwerty touch screen keyboard for text input when writing emails, updating social network profiles and text messaging.

The Nokia N900 is the manufacturers first device to feature their brand new operating system Maemo, this provides slick menu navigation, multiple homescreens and support for many new applications which can be downloaded from the Ovi Store.

The new Maemo powered Nokia N900 has finally found its way onto the O2 network with a range of competitive tariffs released for this latest Nokia phone. The N900 was originally introduced to the market back in early December last year as a SIM Free and unlocked mobile phone, since its initial release the Nokia N900 has gone on to be launched on Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile pay monthly contract deals and with this latest release now has more tariffs to choose from then ever before.
