Display Advertising – The new traditional online advertising

Display Advertising – The new traditional online advertising

Many will remember the days before sponsored advertising, huge shopping comparison engines and dominate search engines. These were the days of Display Advertising.

Considerably expensive, hard to measure and even harder to get a Return on Investment.

Display advertising was the right solution at the right time though. Before the internet; many marketers invested considerably with traditional advertising such as TV, Radio and Print. The only way to measure these efforts was by forecasting impressions. This being the case, display advertising had an added value to at least be able to provide specific impression counts and even some sporadic sales data.

Along comes cost per click and cost per sale advertising. With the ability to measure the specific return on marketing dollar investment, these solutions became far more desirable. Display advertising was relegated only to the most exclusive branding campaigns.

Who could blame marketers for allocating budgets towards such a measurable and targeted sales channel? Compare an impression based campaign results against a good CPC campaign and it’s difficult to argue the merit of impressions to a CFO.

Unfortunately, there has been too much of a shift towards CPC and CPA. The market is affectively too competitive and many of the traditional channels true benefits have either been forgotten or were never understood in the first place. Many small to mid size businesses cannot efficiently compete for Sponsored Advertising placement against “Big Boxes” no matter how savvy they are.

The reasons for this are many but in my opinion, the primary reason is the downturn in the economy.

“Big Boxes” still have their roots in traditional advertising. They understand the value of customer loyalty and lifetime value. Their interest is more on customer acquisition then on return on investment. Therefore, they are willing to take a marketing loss on initial sales in order to either drive the customer to the store or retain customer information for future sales offerings.

Due to the current climate, there has been resurgence in Display Advertising. These changes have adopted the measurable practices of CPC solutions. Many of which are provided at a cost per sale option. An entire industry has developed based on customer loyalty display advertising and customer retargeting/remarketing. Even Google has launched a version of this by utilizing its extensive Double Click and YouTube networks.

It is understandable if marketers are apprehensive about display advertising. Many have not seen results in the past or have not been exposed to ways to measure traditional advertising.

Consider the plight of print advertising. We all know the affects the internet has had on Newspapers and Magazines. Before the internet’s popularity, display Ads was their chief source of revenue. Now with more people getting their news online, print advertising is more reliant than ever on Banner Advertising to survive.

Online News in particular is an increasing desirable area to consider.  People have not stopped reading news articles; they just are not picking it up from their front porch in the morning. Combine the Social media sites and you can see the potential. Facebook after all is the most visited site on the planet.

Even if the display advertising is built on cost per thousand (CPM), there are ways to properly measure the results to ROI. The most important thing to remember when evaluating display advertising is that you know you’re demographic and be just as selective with your Ads as you would be with keywords on sponsored advertising. You will also want to have a specific figure for what the customer lifetime value is. By properly managing a display advertising campaign, you will level the playing field with the “Big Boxes” and can uncover far more cost effective customer acquisition channels.

How to install a Pixel Qi display in an ACER laptop

How to install a Pixel Qi display in an ACER laptop

A few days ago Pixel Qi started shipping DIY kits allowing netbook users to add a 10.1 inch Pixel Qi 3Qi display to their mini-laptops. While the 5 price tag may seem a bit high, what you get for your money is a dual mode display that you can use outdoors just as easily as indoors. That’s because you can enable a low power, high contrast mode for use in direct sunlight. As an added bonus, the screen uses 80% less power in this mode.

There still aren’t any actual computers shipping with Pixel Qi displays, which means if you want one you’re going to have to pony up the cash for a DIY kit… but you’ll also end up voiding your netbook warranty if you open up the case, remove the old display and replace it with a new Pixel Qi display. So if you want to know what you’re in for before pulling out your credit card, you might want to check out the video after the break, courtesy of Make Magazine.See a ACER laptop battery

Basically, the 10 minute video shows how you remove the original screen from an Acer Aspire One laptop, and how you insert and connect the new display. If this all looks too difficult, then you should probably hold off on buying a Pixel Qi display for now and wait until you can actually buy a netbook or tablet with the screen preinstalled. It’ll probably be cheaper than buying an off-the-shelf netbook and a display anyway(acer battery).

Install A Pixel Qi Screen On Your Netbook

As we saw earlier, Mary Lou had delivered on her promise and finally put up a batch of Pixel Qi display kits for purchase over at Maker Shed. The first batch of 5 screens either sold like hotcakes or there just wasn’t that many selling because stock ran out quickly.

Now comes the part where we wait for all the hackers to show off their shiny new Pixel Qi kits on their netbooks. First, we saw the Samsung N135 compared with a Kindle and the other day there was an Acer Aspire One (with Flickr photos) fitted with the display and compared with an OLPC XO 1.5 notebook which sports a slightly older version of the Pixel Qi technology.

And most recently, a semi guide on how to install a Pixel Qi display in your netbook – in this case on one of the more recent Acer Aspire One netbooks. If you’ve never taken a screen out this is definitely worth a look – Makemagazine does the switch in under 10 minutes.

I’d love to try one myself but you know.. the cost is really too much. Anyone going to buy one(buy a dell laptop battery)? Head on over to MakerShed to preorder.

DO You Make An Impression With A Banner Stand Display?

DO You Make An Impression With A Banner Stand Display?

Everyone wants their business to get noticed. When doing a trade show or working a convention, it can be difficult to catch the eye of passersby unless there is something about the display that truly stands out. A banner stand display can bring your product to the forefront and literally put your product out there for everyone to see.

The problem many people are faced with is that when they do a trade show, they are just lost in the crowd. There booth display is not even seen by most people because there is nothing that people can notice from afar that will draw their attention to it. Unless the person is standing out in the aisle like a pitchman, people will come and go without ever noticing their presence.

A banner stand display is a great way to get that attention and start converting leads into sales. One of the best features of the banner stand display is that they can be purchased in varying heights. For someone that is working a show that has several hundred vendors, your banner display as that stands 8 feet tall may be just what is needed to turn some heads.

What goes on the banner stand display is just as important at that is your one shot at being impressive. While it should have some information, it should not be overwhelming. After all, that is the whole purpose of the person that is there working the show. It should be just enough to catch their attention and make them curious.

Knowing the type of set up that is going to be used for the show is also very important. Some people will make the mistake of having only one banner stand display for all of their shows and this can work against them under the wrong circumstances. For instance, what the display is mostly a bright blue background and upon arrival, all of the pipe and drape that is put up is the same exact blue that is on the banner ad?

If the banner ad is the same as the background, it is going to blend right in and will not even be visible to anyone. An effective banner display stand will be a contrast to the area around it and will truly stand out. This is how you get the attention of people from both near and far. It is always best to have a few options to make sure that your display does not get lost in the crowd.

Something else to consider is what is going to happen when more than one person approaches the agent that is working the display. There needs to be something that can occupy the visitors until the agent is freed up to talk to them. A banner stand display with literature pocket is always good for this as they get something to read that has more information and will keep them occupied until someone is available to talk to them.

A banner stand display is a great way to catch the attention of the attendees at any trade show. By taking the time to make sure that the display is truly unique from other companies, your company will separate itself from the others and be the one booth that people are talking about.

Design your banner stand display appropriately to match your targeted demographics. Make yourself noticed with an attention grabbing roll up stand!

Yahoo Wants Local Display Dollars

Yahoo is the top display ad seller at this point in time. That may come as a surprise to many because Yahoo has had a rough go of staying on top of anything lately. Now they are coming off a rough transition year and the tumult of the Microhoo deal is behind them (from a public perspective at least) so Yahoo needs to get in gear.

One of the methods it will be using to keep its top spot in the display ad sales category is to do what everyone seems to figuring out as of late: go local. Forbes.com tells some more

National advertisers spend more than $120 billion on advertising in local markets and Yahoo wants it.

This year the Sunnyvale, Calif., company’s sales reps are going after big companies with outlets that advertise in local newspapers and on regional radio stations and Web sites. These marketers include Dunkin’ Donuts, Burger King, Pizza Hut, State Farm Insurance and Home Depot. The list goes on and Yahoo intends to call every advertiser on it, offering them the opportunity to target regionally and reach millions of people online.

Granted, when you hear about a sales rep charge to make inroads into a hot market you can only hope that you aren’t on the other end of one of those calls. Despite that though, savvy local advertisers may see the value of Yahoo’s local display offering all by themselves (how about that idea?!) and can take advantage of the traffic that Yahoo’s site generates.

Hearing this kind of focus is being put into what Yahoo is actually good at is a great change of pace from the search “news” that still trickles out of Sunnyvale from time to time. In my opinion, Yahoo as a search entity is pretty much dead. They are a content company that provides a search option that will be run by another company who may or may not be a search company themselves. From a business perspective this push for display dominance makes sense especially since Google is flexing its muscles in this area as well.

Yahoo’s focus on local markets comes as Google is diving into the display world to grow beyond its core search business. Having launched a new ad exchange system similar to ones the stock market uses, Google is heating up the competition, adding more clients to its growing roster of display advertisers. Google is also going after some of the same customers–the burger joints and home-improvement centers–as Yahoo, pitching similar opportunities to reach TV-sized audiences without TV prices. It makes for a big battle.

With location based offerings becoming more prominent in the marketplace (at least by the social media industry types….The rest of the world? We’ll see.) and efforts like AOL’s Patch.com to generate local content for businesses to place ads around this space is getting the attention it likely deserves.

Most of our lives occur on some local level. Even if you live in a big metro area you do much of your regular life in close proximity to your home. Local is for everyone. Of course, it is also different for everyone so how this market plays out over time will be interesting as marketers try to find more ways to reach the consumer closer to home when they are closer to buying.

Display Ad Spend Up in 2009 Despite Q4 Dip

Display ads in the Internet space are always an area of lively discussion. Do they work? How should their effectiveness be measured? What is the real value of a display ad? You can insert your question here.

One tried and true measurement for the medium though is just how much is being spent on display ads especially when held up against historical numbers. A press release about a report from Kantar Media and shared with us by TechCrunch shows that the world of display ads vs. it’s competition is doing alright overall.

The curious number is why there was a slip in the 4th quarter spending because it is the biggest buying season in every year no matter how far the economy has slid down the crapper. Maybe there was a shift to more search at that point? I don’t know.

This next chart though takes an interesting look at particular sectors and their overall advertising spend.

Looking at the only sectors of this report to show an uptick in spending, I would have to conclude that during bad economic times people talk on the phone while taking alternate mouthfuls of Doritos, Milk Duds and Prozac. That last bit of data was extremely unscientific in its analysis but I stand by the observation nonetheless.

So now, that we have an idea of what has happened what do you think will happen with the rest of advertising for the year? Will this year see a rebound? Will traditional channels continue to decline? Where will the display ad number be for 2010? Let’s hear it.

Gain a Competitive Edge With Contextual Display Advertising!

A contextual ad system scans the text of a Web site for keywords and returns ads to the Web page based on what the user is viewing, either through ads placed on the page or pop-up ads. Sport your advertisements in such a way that it should match with the content you have published in a page. In other words, the content should be able to justify the advertisements you are providing. This will prompt the viewers to turn their attention to the advertisements also.

Contextual Advertisements helps a lot in this direction. These advertisements, select the advertisements automatically and to the context, which best suits the current content of a web. The publisher gets paid on each click generated by the advertisements. It thus, generates a lot of revenue with every click, the publisher gets paid and the advertiser gains visibility.

Contextual targeting places your ad on websites which have the content related to your ad. It is a good idea to use contextual ads because it adds to your exposure.

Online display advertising employs two basic models such as the contextual and behavioral placement of animated, trackable and sometimes interactive billboards. Users, normally tend to ignore the ads. Sufficient care should be taken to screen each and every ads placed and develop mechanisms to eliminate any noise if it’s prevalent and recognize what is relevant and avoid the irrelevant stuff.

Businesses today faces lot of cut throat competition and one needs to utilize the resources to be in competition, and in fact excel to stay ahead of them all. With technology advances, effective business measures and competitive rivals, companies need to look for the competitive edge of their business, their so called USP. Contextual advertising, reach their customers because they are targeting only the ones who are interested in their product or service. They show only the ads that interest their customers.
