The music player also benefits from the speakers and the 3.5mm jack will accept any headphones you plug in. Motorola have included a 2GB microSD card in the box but you can upgrade the memory to 32GB without a hitch.
Motorola have insisted that a 2.1 version of Android will be released for the Backflip soon, so you won’t have to put up with the 1.5 version for long. The Motorola Backflip is an intuitive, innovative device with plenty of support for online activities and messaging. The Android Market will supply you with enough new stuff to keep you entertained and its e-mail integration will help keep you in touch, Motorola have a tough contender for the Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro and Nokia C6 to tackle.

Device Kindle Review

Great e-reader!
The Device Kindle is a great purchase for anyone who loves reading and will read a lot. I just received it last week and already I am reading more for pleasure than I have in the past few years (and I ordered it because I made a commitment to read more for my own pleasure, since graduate school has a tendency to take over everything you love about leisure time).
The reading takes an adjustment period, especially if you love not only reading but the physical experience of being engrossed in a book. The Device Kindle is thinner than a magazine, so it’s awkward to hold – not in the physical sense (actually it’s far less awkward to hold than a book) but in the sense that if you’re used to reading books this will feel less than genuine to you. Over time, though, it begins to feel super-convenient. I ride the subway a lot and I rarely take out a book because on a short ride, finding my page and keeping the book steady is more hassle than I want. With the Device Kindle, I just whip it out and turn it on, it turns to the page I just finished read, and I can read for 15-20 minutes and then just put it to sleep again. Easy!
It took me a little time to learn to get lost in the Device Kindle like I get lost in books, but after a few days when I adjusted to it it just happened. I was immersed in the story and not in the newness of holding the Device Kindle. The e-ink screen really is more like the page of a book than a computer screen – there’s no backlight, ad the words look like they are printed on top of the screen instead of behind it the way a computer looks. It’s a very comfortable reading experience, although of course you will need lots of light to read just like you would with a book. I don’t have a little booklight because I have my own room and I just use my bedside lamp. Pages turn quickly, which was important for me because I am a fast reader.
The reason I gave the Device Kindle 4 stars instead of 5 is the PDF support. I bought this about 80% because I wanted to read books and 20% because I wanted to see if the PDF support would be good enough to chuck my stacks and stacks of scientific articles and just put them all on the Kindle. Alas, it is not. The Device Kindle basically reproduces a PDF that is readable on a 21″ computer screen to it’s 6″ display by squashing it down. You can’t make the text larger like you can on regular books, and you can’t zoom. The only thing you can do is rotate, which makes some PDFs readable but then you’re in the awkward position of having to press the next and previous page buttons vertically instead of horizontally. It’s just not even worth it.
Oh, and if you’re comparing the Device Kindle to the nook…there aren’t any fundamental differences between the two of them. The nook is thicker and slightly smaller on the face; most of the bells and whistles that distinguish it from the Device Kindle won’t be important to book readers (their biggest selling point was that I could listen to music while reading the book…why would I want to do that?) The largest difference was the touch screen at the bottom, but once you’re doing the primary thing that e-readers do (allow you to read books) it becomes a non-issue, as it’s only for navigation.
It’s actually slightly more awkward to navigate using the touch screen because you have to look between both screens, whereas with the Device Kindle you just use the directional rocker in the planned direction. Easy cake. I would say check to be sure that you don’t have a large library of ePUB books that you want to read, and the nook has much better PDF support so if you want to read PDFs really badly, either get the nook or go for the Device Kindle DX. Also browse the holdings of Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com before you buy. I found that there were far more books I wanted to read that were offered by Amazon for the Device Kindle than by B&N for the nook.
Anyway, this is a great buy!

I love this Device Kindle
I’ve been showing my Device Kindle to everyone. This is the best purchase I’ve made in a long time. I’m a psychologist and it has been really helpful in doing some research for a PTSD therapy group I’m starting for members of the military.
My vision isn’t the best, so I really like the ability to change the text size. I use the text-to-speech feature at times. I’ve shown it to one kid who is dyslexic and he volunteered that he thinks it would be helpful to him. I showed it to a girl who also has a reading problem. I downloaded a sample of Twilight for her to try and switched on the text-to-speech. She couldn’t put the Kindle down, reading along with the audio. Her parents were very pleased and I’m sure they ordered a Device Kindle within a day or two.
People universally have thanked me for showing them this Device Kindle.
Goodbye paperbacks, hello Device Kindle!
By: Tim S.
My Device Kindle 2 arrived yesterday and I wanted to post a review before I forgot my initial impressions. The first thing I noted was the shipping package. It appeared to be in the standard Amazon brown box that all Amazon shipments come in, but upon closer look I saw that it was a custom package exclusively for the Device Kindle. The brown box had a pull tab to ease opening, no need for a cutting tool. Next to the pull tab were the words “Once upon a time…”. Cool.
The interior packaging was black and stylish, but it could have been a brown paper bag for all I cared. I opened it and looked at the Device Kindle. Right on the Device Kindle’s main screen is all you need to know to get the device setup. Basically, just plug into the wall to start charging and flip the switch to start using. It is that simple.
There was a Getting Started document and guide as well as a welcome letter, but after glossing over these quickly I found I didn’t need much help. You can pretty much figure everything out by just trying the buttons.
I went to the Device Kindle Store and noticed that it had a list of suggestion based on my past Amazon purchase and viewing history. Nice touch as I was able to easily find a book that I had intended to purchase. I clicked that books link, hit buy and within a few seconds I had the item in my library.
Reading on the Device Kindle 2 is practicaly effortless. With no previous experience with Kindle, I was still able to feel comfortable reading and paging within minutes. I read while exercising, lying in bed and on the train ride to work this morning. You really do forget the device is there. The reading experience is much easier than flipping through a dog-eared paperback.
I am happy with my purchase knowing I got the best digital reading device on the market today.

The Kindle Device 2 is a back saver!
I travel A LOT, and the Kindle has been the best addition to my travel bag in years! Not only do I get to carry an assortment of books to suit whatever mood I’m in on a plane/train ride, but all the manuals for the equipment my team uses are all loaded into one little Kindle Device.
In addition to electronic books, the Kindle Device 2 reads PDFs and (simple# Word documents. I simply send 100+ page manuals to my Kindle email address and voila! They are at my disposal on the road, without my having to lug around pounds of paper.
The business applications for anyone who has to read large documents are great. I’ve recommended the Kindle Device to the attorney’s on our staff. You can’t really ‘red line’ a doc on a Kindle Device, but you can certainly read through a contract on a plane/beach/etc, make notes, and then easily email those comments and notes to yourself #or someone who works for you# when you are near a wifi connection once again.
Plus the Kindle Device starts up in 2 seconds so documents can be retrieved quickly – and straight to the page upon which you left off – or quickly to any bookmarks or notes you’ve already made. It’s become much faster for me to get right to what I need on my Kindle Device, than a doc on any laptop or smart phone.
This is an incredibly handy device if you have a love for, or work extensively with, the written word.
Oh and one more thing – I’ve discovered that if you turn of “wifi” (easy navigation) until you know you need to send or retrieve something, the battery lasts for many many more hours.
Kindle Device 2

I read a lot of reviews before purchasing this item and many of them cried about all the things it didn’t do.
The Kindle Device 2 is a portable library. It is light-weight and compact. The screen is supposed to be similar to looking at the paper pages in a book and therefore easier than staring at a backlit computer screen which I certainly do enough of each day. It is all of these things. And in all the complaints I read about the things it didn’t do.. well, those people just need a regular computer. That’s what they are looking for and there are plenty of tiny little computers out there. You want apps? Can’t live without twittering and updating facebook? Then get an I phone you can download books on that too.
I wanted something to carry with me where ever I went and not to have to choose which book to bring along. I needed to stop collecting shelves and shelves of books that are collecting dust and taking up space.
The Kindle Device 2 is everything I thought it would be and then some.

WE OWN THREE!
Ok, here goes. I don’t usually write reviews for products. That being said, I do rely heavily on reviews when I make a purchase. Everything from my new car(2009 Honda Fit, which is the BEST economy car on the planet, but that’s for another web site),to a deep fryer….Even movies and books.
I first learned of Kindle while watching Oprah of all things,(I’m Peggy’s husband writing this review)which I never do….I SWEAR!! She was talking about her favorite gadgets, and had the Amazon rep. there. They thoroughly reviewed the Kindle 2 Device, and by the time they were thru, I knew it was perfect for my 13 y.o. daughter. See, she reads about 3-4 books a week, wears the library out, and her room walls are covered with more books! We own a small townhouse, and I finally had to tell her to only buy “special books, ones she really had to own. She’s an Honors Student, jumped two grades in school, and is now a freshman in high school, earning college credits.
OK, enough bragging! The cost of the Kindle 2 Device made me wait awhile before ordering it, but Oprah had an offer for two weeks after her show, you enter her name in the promotion code area and you got .00 off. So I ordered it and it came in time for Christmas. When she opened it on Christmas morning, she had no idea what it was. I had saved the Oprah show on my dvr, and just played it for her. As the explanation went on, she began to “get it” and held it tighter and tighter! I spoil my daughter, and she received dozens of things for Christmas, psp, rock band, etc…. I SWEAR, for the first 48 hours, she didn’t touch any other gift!
Now, my wife starts to look at it, and proclaimed she wanted one for her birthday. So on 12/28,I ordered her one. It came on herb. day in Feb., and with her being an English major and a school teacher, she too quickly fell in love with it. I must explain, in between the first one and the second one, the Kindle 2 Device came out, and Amazon automatically sent her the Kindle 2 Device. At first I thought wait a minute, no memory chip, no exchangeable battery, a few other diff.’s. But within a day, I liked it way better.
Now my wife and daughter were sitting by the pool reading their kindles, and I commented on how I didn’t have one….. A week later mine showed up in the mail! My sneaky wife had ordered me one.
This thing is amazing!! Things you should know: If u end up like us with more than 1 Kindle 2 Device, any book bought by one can be shared by both, or in our case, all three. They are archived at amazon, just click on archive list, and you can access all books bought, even put on computer if you want. This also takes care of the memory issue with Kindle 2 Device. If by some chance you fill up your memory, you can delete books from your device, but it will ALWAYS be stored at Amazon for you. Did you know you can access the internet, such as espn, cnn, google, I even access my local paper. Most pics or video does not show though. People comment it can get expensive buying books, and it can, but there are dozens and dozens of books that are free also! Most of the classics, a lot of romance and adventure, it’s amazing.
Just browse books from least expensive and you’ll see what I mean. ANY SERVICE issues, we’ve had two, are promptly handled by Amazon. When you click on help on the Kindle 2 Device website, it asks you for a phone number, to call you right back. I thought sure they will. I swear, as soon as I pressed enter, my phone rang, it was Amazon and someone in America who spoke English!! Within seconds they reset my kindle and we were done. My wife’s kindle wasn’t holding a charge very long, when I called them, they ALREADY knew about it! How often she was charging it, how long it was on, etc….they promptly sent her a new Kindle 2 Device.
Sorry for the long review, in short, lol, BUY one, the are worth EVERY cent, you won’t regret it! Oh yeah, spend the extra ten bucks, and get an M-Edge book cover, they are way better than the cheaper Amazon cover. BTW, it doesn’t come with a cover.

Broken Kindle Customer Service Review
There are plenty of reviews on the Kindle Reading Device itself, but I’d like to let you know of my experience with returning my broken Kindle Reading Device from Canada… this was the sort of information I was looking for when I made the decision to make such a large online purchase.
I had my Kindle Reading Device for about two weeks when the screen stopped working… I flicked the switch to start reading, and the screen froze with a bunch of lines on it that would flicker a bit when I hit a button, but that was all. Oh boy.
I went online and followed the advice to try a reset (holding the switch for 15 seconds to reboot), and to try fulling charging the Kindle Reading Device, but nothing was working. I wasn’t upset or surprised that it stopped working (that’s the nature of electronics, sometimes you just get a dud), but I have to admit I was dreading the trouble I expected to go through to get it fixed/replaced.
There is no 1-800 number for Canada for Kindle Reading Device support, so you request them to call you via a button on their site. I hit the button, bent over to plug in the Kindle Reading Device, and the phone rang before I straightened up. I had maybe a 20 second wait for an agent to come on the phone. (This could have been because it was 8am AST on a Saturday, but I was still impressed.)
The gentleman that answered asked for my email that I registered under, and said he was reading over what I had written earlier (I had emailed at first asking for other tricks to try to fix it). He asked me to go over the problem again with him. He asked how I reset it, and confirmed I had done it correctly, asked about recharging (which I had tried as well) and said that it was an issue with some of the Kindles Reading Device and I had done all I could.
Reassuringly, I didn’t get the reaction of ‘Well, what were you doing, throwing it? You must have done something wrong. I’m not sure that’s covered.’ or anything like that. There was no argument, just an apology that it broke down on me. While he did walk me through another reset, he never once made me feel like I was too incompetent to figure out how to reset it properly (which I have felt in dealing with other ’support’ people for other companies).
He confirmed my address, asked to confirm my credit card number (which he explained was required only in case someone decided to keep the first Kindle and not send it back, perfectly understandable), and then advised he would be sending a link to print a shipping label to attach to the box I return the Kindle Reading Device in, free of charge.
Then he apologized over the fact that my new Kindle Reading Device would be delayed in arriving because of storms in the area they are shipped out of, and sadly I wouldn’t get it until… wait for it… Wednesday. The following Wednesday. Not a month, or two, but 4 DAYS from then. And that was the big ‘delay’. I actually had to ask him twice to make sure of the date, because I was expecting a few weeks delivery, and not until after they received the broken Kindle Reading Device. But no, they shipped it out and I actually received it the day after I mailed mine out.
I opened it up, charged it, it was already registered to me. I downloaded again the books I had bought, copied over some free books I had backed up to my computer, and voila, good as new.
I can’t begin to tell you how impressed I am, and I’d like to think this is not an uncommon experience. I have had to return items before to local companies, and this was every bit as easy, if not easier in some cases. It’s sure reassured me about online purchases!

Kindle Wireless Reading Device User Reviews…

Simply amazing!
Loving all things tech and loving the read I have looked at the Kindle a lot since the Kindle came to Amazon. In reading the reviews however, I always found a reason to put it off…. until I received an email about the release of Kindle 2.
I deciced to purchase it immeditely with a couple of hesitations:
1) Living in Rural Nevada I was not sure about the wireless coverage; and
2) I was unsure whether I could get the books I wanted.
As far as books I would want, I spent sometime searching for the 10 or so books that I have read and round every one of them for the Kindle. My one disaapointment was to find ONLY 2 Alistair MacLean books (I’d love to have every one of them on my Kindle.
Yesterday my Kindle arrived – I opened the box, turned it on and by the time I read the package insert, the 10 or so books that I had already purchased… and USA Today, were on my Kindle and ready to go! I was really amazed to see the 3G logo on my Kindle.
After work, I rushed home and ready the users guide that came on the Kindle and began reading my first novel.
I’m not going to go into any details about buttons, speech (although I did think the text-to-speech was better than I expected based on reviews), etc. I will just say I am so glad I finally took the plunge and got me a Kindle!
LOVE MY KINDLE!!!!
By: Mrs. S.
I drooled and debated over this and finally bit the bullet and put all my saved-up gift money towards my Kindle. It’s been years since I’ve been able to read so many books!
The Kindle is easy to use (I also think the button placements make perfect sense) and it’s wonderful to take any book anywhere at anytime. I can read a couple of books at a time – something I have almost never done in the past because of the bulk, inconvenience, etc.
I got the Mighty Bright light and the leather cover. I like both. I can read in bed at any time, in any position with comfort and without disturbing my husband.
This is the best gift (thanks to all my relatives and friends contributions from C-mas, birthday, etc) I’ve had in a long time.
If you like/love to read – this makes it SO enjoyable!!
(I’ve kept the review more personal because so many have detailed descriptions of the product itself, I didn’t think I needed to be repetitive on those points)

Device Kindle VS Sony
By: C. M. White
After using a Sony Reader since they first came out I found that the Device Kindle had some quirks( Sony does too). I’m not crazy about the menu setup (probably I can change that, I haven’t tried) Downloading books was a lot easier than the Sony. Our 3G coverage seems to fluctuate and I can’t always get online. I love being able to download just a sample for free and being able to switch from book to book easily and quickly.
The Sony takes 60 seconds (yes I timed it) to go back to the main menu and used an incrediable amount of battery. I had to charge my Sony much quicker than the Device Kindle. Sony promised 7500 pages of reading per charge and I think I got about 2000 if lucky. The Device Kindle charger is much smaller and lighter than the Sony but has a shorter cable and if I want to read while it’s charging it’s difficult.
Device Kindle is easier to read but harder to hold. I have problems with my hands and the Sony is lighter, smaller and easier to hold. Sony lets you add a memory card but the Device Kindle doesn’t. I haven’t had to re-download anything but other reviewers did have some problems. Until I can read the books on my Sony with the Device Kindle I will keep the Sony because I have 150 books on it.
I probably won’t download anymore from Sony. Device Kindle books are also cheaper than Sony. Overall I prefer the Device Kindle to the Sony.
Device Kindle 2 Review
By: Judith Doyel “Tutor D”
I love the Device Kindle 2. My family ordered me a Device Kindle for my birthday and I was one of the lucky people whose order was in the time period where it was automatically upgraded to a Device Kindle 2 and it was shipped with the first group out. It is easy to use, in fact I had already ordered a list of books for the device before I received it and it only took a few minutes out of the box before my books were loaded onto the device and I was busy reading one of them. I am enjoying reading my daily paper each morning on the device. No need to worry about weather delays or carrier problems.
I like the easy of ordering books from the web site and from the device. I can read a review of a book that sounds interesting and order it right away, if it is available.
I purchased the Device Kindle 2 cover which attached easily to the device and I also use the book light. I work 3rd shift and frequently read in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep and with the book light I can read without disturbing the rest of the family as they sleep.
I will consider this as a gift for my mother in law who reads a lot. She will enjoy the feature that lets you adjust the print size. I use that as well when it gets late and my eyes tire.
I have barely put this down since it arrived. I love it!

Kindle Reading better than Sony and Nook
Ok, I am a pilot and was looking for an electronic reader to carry my IFR approach plates on. I started with the Sony Reader. A good product, but I was frustrated with the user interface and the very slow speed it operated at. Additionally the resolution was not great. I found it difficult to read the fine print typical of the PDF approach plates.
Next I got the nook. I waited two months to get it and I thought it would rock, but I discovered that it is bulky and the resolution is very bad. It had several features like a touch screen display, but I was frustrated by no ability to zoom or rotate the screen, so PDF was impossible to read on it. Plus it was very limited for online access (couldn’t browse the web or get access to most of the news).
Finally I got the Kindle Reading…. absolutely hands down winner of the three. There isnt even a competition. The Kindle Reading is quick, with a well thought-out interface, excellent image quality, has text to speech, almost a full web browsing capability, books download in seconds. The Kindle Reading is also thinner and lighter than the nook, and has more default storage space. The keyboard on the kindle is a life saver. The best thing I can say about the Kindle Reading is its ease of use. So if you are on the line between the three readers, Kindle Reading is for you. There is no competition.
Dyslexic Kindle Lover
By: D. Williams
I’m 61 years old and I have dyslexia pretty bad. In fact, I’m dictating this review to my wife or it would never get written. I’ve never been able to sit down and read a book before, besides technical things because I can’t read fast enough or accurately enough to keep my brain stimulated. But with the Kindle Reading and the text to speech feature, I am reading books left and right and am thrilled beyond belief. So, if you have dyslexia, or if someone on your Christmas list does, this is the answer!
The text to speech feature on the Kindle 2 could use some improvements. There are a lot of mispronounced words but for someone like me, who is just trying to read along with the speech, it’s quite acceptable. However, if you were vision-impaired or wanted to listen to it while you were doing something else, you might not like it. To all the publishers who have not allowed Amazon to enable the text to speech feature because you fear it might affect your Books on Tape sales, you have nothing to worry about. I have listened, over the years, to many books on tape and believe me, there is no comparison between a computer that pronounces the year “1910″ as “I go” and the performance of a Frank Mueller! But, rest assured, I will never buy a Kindle book that is not text to speech enabled. I wouldn’t be able to read it.
We live in a very rural area with spotty cell phone coverage. In fact we have no coverage on our farm. However, my Kindle Reading is able to download books at my home.
I find the electronic ink display wonderful. It looks very much like a book and is easy on the eyes. I’m glad it doesn’t have backlighting. If it did, it would look like a computer screen instead of a book.
As for the Kindle Reading’s durability, it is a sensitive instrument, just like a camera or a pair of binoculars so it should be treated with care. So far, I’ve dropped mine twice onto a stone floor from the sofa and haven’t broken it, amazingly, but that’s not advisable!
All in all, I love my Kindle Reading 2.
