Kindle Amazon Best Deal Check It Now!

Kindle Amazon  User Review…

By: Joe

It’s how you use it that counts

I’ve been tracking Kindle Amazon reviews ever since the first model came out. Once the second Kindle came out, and I saw the majority of reviewers slant to more of the postiive side, I decided that it was time to invest. After using it for about a week, I am quite satisfied — but you should understand that I didn’t buy a Kindle Amazon with the intent of “recovering my investment”, as it seems like so many other folks want to do.

Yes, the Kindle Amazon is expensive. If I wanted to buy the Kindle strictly from a return-on-investment perspective, I wouldn’t have bought it at a 0 price point. I don’t read enough for the Kindle Amazon to recover the money I would save if I just continually bought best selling hardcovers. I bought it as a gadget, as a way to get me more into reading, make it more fun, and make it more convenient for the occasional travel or novel in bed. From that perspective, I’m very happy with my choice.

I also don’t use all of the functionality to the fullest extent possible. I don’t highlight, take notes, or anything like that, and I only occasionally buy books. So take this review for what it’s worth.

Here’s what I like the most:
— Lets you read the way you want to read. Books are easy to find, sample, purchase, and then read (since you can adjust text size to your liking).
— Instant access to the web & bookstore without monthly fees. It’s not the bset web browser, but to look at simple static content on the go, it’s more than fine. Even with newspapers and magazines, you don’t HAVE to buy a monthly subscription. Once you have the Kindle, you are allowed to purchase a single issue if you want.
— Easy navigation between books, lists, and the web once you get the nag of it.
— The built-in dictionary. I don’t have to swallow my pride anymore and glaze over words I don’t understand — I can look them up on the fly. GREAT idea.
— Battery life (with the wireless off).

Here’s what I like the least:
— Book prices for books that have been around a while. Amazon itself lists older best selling paperbacks for a penny used plus shipping. So I basically have to pay a premium for a book that came out five years ago if I want to read it on Kindle, since I can get it cheaper on paper.
— No cover shipped with Kindle. Tack on at least for a suitable protective cover, unless you want to use the original packaging (like I did for a week while waiting for my cover — I don’t recommend doing this, it’s bulky).
— Text-to-speech is okay but clunky.
— Samples are a little unpredictable in terms of what you will get. I assumed you received up to the end of the first chapter in all cases, but it seems to vary widely by the book.
— No backlight. I understand Amazon took this out to preserve battery life, and I would have done the same thing. Hopefully in the next version they find a way for the two to co-exist.
— No integrationw with Amazon wish list. There is no way to directly add a Kindle book to your Amazon wish list, and even if you could, you can’t access your wish list from the Kindle Amazon. This is tough for me since I use my wish list as an all-encompassing “here’s what I want but don’t want to pay for right now” list. My workaround though seems to work. Go into the Kindle edition on Amazon.com, download the sample, then go down to Customer Reviews & click on “see all reviews”. Once there, you can add it to your wish list. Then I just leave the sample in my Kindle Amazon until I read it and decide one way or the other whether I really want the book.

It doesn’t really bother me that there’s not a color or touch screen. But then you’re reading the review of a guy who still uses a 1st generation iPOD mini & sees no need to upgrade.

Overall, as a casual reader, I’m very pleased with my purchase. I didn’t really do much comparison shopping with other readers, so I can’t speak to how it’s better or worse than anything else. I also haven’t experienced tech support yet, on which I’ve seen mised stories. But overall, I’m quite happy.

I hope if they come out with a Kindle Amazon 3 that they give Kindle Amazon 2 owners an opportunity to upgrade at a major discount (which they didn’t do with Kindle 1).

Wireless Kindle 2 Best Deal!

Wireless Kindle 2 Customer Reviews…

Wireless Kindle 2–many things to love

As one of the original Kindle’s biggest fans and an owner for over a year, I can speak to the Kindle from two perspectives–the benefits of owning a Wireless Kindle, and Wireless Kindle 2 improvements (as I’ve now had it for half a day)

The benefits of owning a Kindle (these do not change)

– Absolutely, Jeff Bezos is right that the Kindle ‘disappears’ as you read it…as I read other reviews (and non-user critiques) about the Wireless Kindle, this point is often lost. Once you have the Wireless Kindle in your hands, you forget everything and become immersed in the content of what you’re reading. Isn’t that really the whole point?

– I read more now that I have my Wireless Kindle, 10 years out of college than I did when I was in school, and I really enjoy it. Books look a lot less intimidating when they aren’t sitting on your bookshelf and 3 inches thick. I recently finished Team of Rivals, and I am sure that if I had to read it in book form, I would never have gotten through it because it would have felt so intimidating.

– Heft and weight is a complete non-issue with the Kindle. I like to read in odd positions (in bed, on the couch, on a plane, poolside, shifting around in a lounge chair) and I’ve always had trouble with real books because unless you are in the absolute middle of the book, it always is weighted to one side or another and frankly, my arm and pinkie finger gets tired holding it up. The Wireless Kindle is balanced and portable, and entirely usable in any situation.

– I can be in the middle of a lot of different books at once…not much more to say here. You never run out of space on the Kindle, and though it may be a little bit hard to maneuver around a lot of books in your library, it’s still better to have access to all your books at any time.

– I now read newspapers. I always found physical newspapers to be clumsy and take up too much space to actually subscribe to. They are great for short content pieces, but terrible for reading in transit because the pages are so big. I also read some articles on my BlackBerry, but find myself scrolling a lot and waiting a long time for page loads. On the Kindle, you have wireless delivery, easy navigation, no ads, no need to flip to page D17 and find the place where you left off. You also have a searchable/annoted/bookmarked archive of all your newspaper articles if you ever need to find something again.

– All of these things can probably be accomplished with any eBook reader. The difference with the Wireless Kindle is that you have wireless delivery of content. This means, literally, that I can be sitting on the plane, start talking about what good books the guy sitting next to me has read recently, look it up on my Wireless Kindle, read the reviews and download it before the rest of the passengers have boarded and the plane doors close. This has happened.

– My biggest complaint, which I’m sure will be addressed in due course is that the entire wireless benefit does not exist outside of the US. I have taken my Wireless Kindle to Canada, Mexico and China, and I found that I had to (gasp), decide what I wanted to have on my Wireless Kindle before I left the US. Foreign language support would also be a plus, but again, I see why this might come later.

Now, onto improvements with the Wireless Kindle 2

– There are the obvious ones: sleeker look and feel (it feels solid in your hands), sharper screen, no longer accidentally depressing the next page button by accident and having to find your place in the book again…you can read about these from various sources)

– The 5-way button, though a bit small, allows you to select left and right, and not just up and down like the original version. This is very helpful when you want to select and highlight.

– There are now two layers of interaction…before when you were reading a paper, you could only go back to the previous screen to select the next article. Now, there is an option at the bottom of the screen to skip to the next article when you tire of the current one.

– Page loads are much faster. I can feel that the delay between pages is much less. Only issue is I need to recalibrate now–in general, I try to anticipate how much time it will take the next page to load, and when I’m two lines from the bottom, I would hit the next page button. Now I need to push the button later.

– Text to speech is cloogey, but fun. I’m not sure how useful this will end up being. I tried to have the voice read the user’s manual to me and it paused at commas and periods, but skipped right over hard returns. It also scrolled the page as it was reading, so if you are trying learn English and don’t mind developing a metallic accent, it could really help. :-) You can also choose, male/female and speed. I think this could be a nice feature, though probably won’t be using it all the time.

– Managing your books is much easier. It’s easy to see what is in your archive and re-download onto the Wireless Kindle. Also easy to delete and manage your books. That 5-way button is magical…though a bit unintuitive–you need to train yourself to think that there might be something useful if you scroll to the right.

– Dictionary is improved. Now you can highlight a word and it automatically gives you a definition at the bottom of the screen. It also lets you look up words (that are not in the text), which is an improvement since the last version.

I’m sure there are still a bunch of things that I haven’t yet discovered about the Kindle 2. I don’t really bookmark/annotate/highlight that much, but for those who do, I think this has also been improved upon.

Overall, the Wireless Kindle is an amazing product. It did the basics well in the original model, the Kindle 2 has improved on a lot of dimensions, and I look forward to seeing what new bells and whistles are still to come.

If you are considering buying one, and need to see before you order, find someone in your city who has one and can show you. There is now a special board for this on Amazon. Wireless Kindle owners (at least this one), are always happy to talk about it, and you will be delighted with the screen and the possibilities in such a compact package.

Kindle Reading Device Best Deal “Today” Check It Now!

Kindle Reading Device Best Deal “Today” Check It Now!

Kindle Reading Device User Review…

By: Donald W. Stein

Kindle Reading Device 2 Great Reading Gadget. Review Compared with BN Nook.

I had the Kindle Reading Device 2 in my shopping cart for months before I finally bought it. The person on the bus home one day had the Kindle Reading Device and was reading. A chance to look at the Kindle Reading Device in person locked it in for me. It’s too bad Amazon doesn’t have a way other than arranging a meeting with a Kindle owner to demo it in person. I think it really helps in sealing the deal.

The other thing that locked in the deal for me was making the Global version of the Kindle Reading Device the only version at 9. The price is still high for a gadget that does really only one thing in grayscale but hopefully the price will come down one day and there will be color e-ink.

The Kindle Reading Device was very easy to get started with. Unboxing was easy and Apple product-like. The device was pre-registered to my account and it had an friendly welcome letter from Bezos.

There was a recent firmware update that increased battery life and removed some restrictions on pdf documents. It was not pre-installed as I thought it would be. I had to follow Amazon’s online instructions to update the Kindle Reading Device manually since I didn’t want to wait until it updated on its own.

The Kindle Reading Device e-ink technology is great for reading. I can read for a long time with no eyestrain. I was using the Kindle Reading Device iPhone app occasionally before I got the Kindle Reading Device and the difference in reading is very noticeable. The page transition does take a little getting used to as it is flashing when re-draiwng each page but you soon ignore it. The text really looks etched in and is very readable even in bright light. I love the inline dictionary. The grayscale works very well with pictures and diagrams.

Battery life is great. It’s awesome to have a gadget that doesn’t need to be charged everyday. The advertised battery charge life is accurate and if you’re on a long train or plane ride you will be able to read without charging.

Navigation is a little confusing at first. The 5-way controller is useful once you get used to it. Navigating in the Kindle Reading Device store is still a little cumbersome though. The keyboard looks and feels weird but works fine.

The Kindle Reading Device e-book store has a pretty good selection. I’m disappointed that some new books are above .99 and that some authors are delaying the Kindle Reading Device version release to allow time for hardcover sales. I find it hard to believe that e-book sales are cannibalizing hardcover sales. Once you make the investment in an e-reader I don’t know why you would shoot yourself in the foot by buying the hardcover. I can’t think of any book that I wouldn’t wait for in e-book format. Browsing the Kindle Reading Device book store on the Kindle Reading Device for random good reads is problematic. You get some recommendations but random discovery of SF or mystery books really doesn’t work. Also,in general older books from authors are harder to find.

I’ve heard some people say they don’t want to give up the smell and feel of books. IMHO,a good leather cover takes care of that. DRM is a problem though. You’re buying books in a proprietary format that can’t last for decades like current books and also cannot be shared with friends. Hopefully,with time,new technology and finally real competition there will be some changes.

Durability was one of the major concerns I had in buying a Kindle Reading Device. I had read some of the reviews of how easily a Kindle Reading Device can be damaged. I’ve noticed that the drop test video Amazon used to have up is gone. The Kindle Reading Device does feel a little delicate in your hands. I have dropped it once now from about 2 feet onto a carpet and it survived unscathed. I don’t think it would fare well on a hard surface though.

I’ve used the Kindle Reading Device internationally in Japan and Singapore. I wasn’t aware there are separate Whispersync charges for international synching. It’s .99 per book and another charge per MB for downloading personal docs. Amazon really doesn’t mention this clearly enough on the product page. It only mentions “additional charges may apply”. However, when you turn on wireless for the first time internationally it downloads a document detailing the charges for you and the Kindle Reading Device store clearly mentions the .99 charge near the buy button. It was nice to buy the current issue of the NY Times on the plane before take-off in Tokyo. Oddly Amazon does not charge additionally internationally for the use of the Experimental web browser. I was able to login to Twitter easily and send a tweet.

Summary:

Pros:

* Awesome battery life.
* No need to lug books taking valuable luggage space when traveling.
* Cheaper books for the most part.
* 3G Wireless included in product price.
* Great readability with e-ink
* Built-in dictionary
* Global wireless

Cons:

* Still a little expensive.
* DRM
* e-books over .99
* Delayed e-book releases by publisher
* Tough to discover/browse for new books on the Kindle Reading Device

I have a friend who owns a B&N Nook and so I can provide a little comparison.

Nook Wins:

* Does look more advanced and cleaner.
* Color touchscreen and book cover.
* Actual page count progress instead of Kindle’s confusing progress bar.
* In-store demo booth.
* Loaning out books from Public Library. My friend was able to get new releases for free with this. Kindle Reading Device needs to get on this.
* Purchased e-book Loaning
* Font choices

Kindle Wins:

* Battery Life
* Global Wireless
* Faster page loading and transition. The Nook did seem slower than the Kindle Reading Device at times.
* You can get the Kindle Reading Device immediately.

Nook & Kindle Tie:

* e-ink display
* eBook selection

Overall for me the Kindle Reading Device still wins since I need the longer battery life and Global wireless since I travel alot internationally. I’m glad the Nook is here to provide some competition pressure. This competition is already causing price drops and more features from Amazon.

Find the best Deal for Amazon Kindle and why Kindle is the best portable reading device!

Find the best Deal for Amazon Kindle and why Kindle is the best portable reading device!

The Amazon Kindle experience is different to any other portable reading device today. Let’s explore more closely. The Amazon Kindle supports all PDF formats to ensure all popular book formats can be viewed on the Kindle with its stunning sharp resolution.  The Kindle uses a proprietary electronic ink technology which makes viewing on the Kindle look like you were reading from a real book or newspaper and is very easy on the eye.

Comparing the Kindle and Sony Reader in the UK

Ok, I will assume you’re looking for the best eBook reader for use in the UK if you’ve read this far. One of the top factors in my decision to buy the Kindle is the vast amount of book titles and publications available in the Kindle store when compared to other download stores for use with other eBook reader devices.

In particular, I looked at both the Amazon Kindle and Sony reader in detail before I purchased my Kindle. The Sony reader uses the Waterstones online bookstore for it’s downloads in the UK. Now while the most popular book titles are available, the quantity of electronic book titles available is very poor when compared to the Kindle store.

Text to Speech functionality on the Amazon Kindle

If you have read about the new Amazon Kindle DX you will have noticed the new “text to speech” function which the Amazon Kindle boasts. This is surely another key factor which puts the Kindle over its competition. So what is this “text to speech” thing?

Well the Kindle reading device supports PDF and other eBook formats so you can read all your favorite books to your hearts content. However, should you get tired of reading or say you need to take a drive, this new function reads the book to you much like an audiobook on the iPod. This new feature is excellent to pass time when driving, relaxing or going to sleep.

Can I use the Amazon Kindle for uses other than reading?

The simple answer is yes. The Kindle is a fantastic companion while away from the office. The Kindle has email functionality letting you stay connected with people while you’re on the go. The Kindle also lets you convert your emailed office documents into Kindle format allowing you to view your office documents directly on your Amazon Kindle.

The Kindle is a great companion for all those crossword lovers boasting a fabulous dictionary support. The Kindle can tell you the meaning of a word providing you with multiple related words and definitions. Master your vocabulary and crossword skill with the Amazon Kindle.

Amazon Kindle: The Wireless Device using Whispernet technology available in the UK

Amazon Kindle’s new wireless feature allows you to download books, read email and access the web by wireless using its Whispernet technology. Wireless access is free using Amazon’s proprietary technology.

This new exciting feature allows you to access news, weather, Wikipedia and browse web sites to your heart’s content. The web browser is significantly faster than its previous model providing an enjoyable web experience while you’re on the move.

Final Thoughts and Conclusions

I hope you found the above review helpful and I have summarised the top features below which make the Amazon Kindle stand out from the other devices in the market.

-          Stores hundreds of books and can download from 90,000 books in the Kindle store

-          Downloads books wirelessly from the Kindle store without access to your home computer or having to be near a wifi spot

-          With the Kindle’s new text to speech function it can read the book to you. This is much like how audiobooks work on the iPod or iPhone

-          The Kindle is capable or viewing much more than books – blogs, newspapers, magazines, email, websites, etc.

-          Fabulous dictionary support to help with those frustrating crosswords

-          Email support on the Kindle

-          Converts popular office document formats to a format compatible with the Kindle allowing you to read on the Amazon Kindle wherever you are

-          Auto rotation allowing your book to change as you change when you rotate the Kindle. This works just like it does on the iTouch and iPhone.

-          Battery life is very impressive lasting a few days before your next charge even if you leave  the wireless on for emails. You can even read while the Kindle charges.

The Kindle is my favourite portable device. I love reading and I love the Kindle which combines  reading and online access allowing you to download more books without having to be beside your home computer or laptop. The Kindle experience feels just like you are reading a book or newspaper.

Amazon have certainly made excellent improvements on the DX model. With its new sharper resolution, wireless access via Whispernet and a vast unrivalled Kindle store for book content. You will love the new Kindle. Enjoy your books the Kindle way.

Amadeus Consulting: Silverlight® & Flash® in Mobile: What’s the big deal?

Amadeus Consulting: Silverlight® & Flash® in Mobile: What’s the big deal?

Everything, everything, everything seems to be moving mobile these days; we may have even talked about it a time or two, ahem. With all this talk of mobile applications, there are so many factors to discuss: What kind of app? How do I improve my retention? What is the business case for a mobile Web site? However, we’d like to zero in on one issue in particular.

Why are the full-fledged browser rich media plug-ins Adobe® Flash® and Microsoft® Silverlight® so important for mobile?  Why do we feel that Silverlight is a front-runner and early adopter?

Wooop hold up, let’s talk about WHAT are these Flashy and Silverlighty things?

Flash is a software developed by Adobe that handles lightweight vector animation and is designed primarily to create animations for Web Pages. It allows users to have interactive experiences, use Web applications, and view embedded video and a lot more.

Silverlight is software developed by Microsoft that is a platform that develops interactive applications for Web sites that is similar to Flash, but has surpassed it in terms of interactivity and multi-platform functionality: deep zoom, perspective 3D graphics, advanced skinning and styling, smooth streaming and out of browser.

It seems both Adobe, Microsoft and various other software vendors have had a lot of trouble translating their plug-ins into this environment because of lack of access to mobile OS and battery drainage among many issues. First of all, let’s lay out some statistics that discuss why Software giant’s care about this so much.

In 2009 alone, over 166 million smartphones were shipped worldwide; Symbian and RIM accounting for a significant chunk of that out-of US market. Particularly in America, we have prevalence towards the Apple® iPhoneâ„¢, the Googleâ„¢ Androidâ„¢, Microsoft’s Windows® Phones and various other hardware. The point of all of this is there is a HUGE market for these plug-ins. It has each of these companies chomping at the bit to be the front-runner in this ‘format war,’ and justifiably so. There is a ton of money as well as street cred to be had.

On to things we software developers, online marketers and mobile app users can relate to, why do we care!?

From Desktop to Mobile: Replicating Environments

This is a critical issue for those who seek to create a seamless transition from their Web sites to the mobile browsers. For instance, think about how an iPhone user would go about viewing a YouTubeâ„¢ video. YouTube has made an app so that users can access videos, but this goes outside the way users access them in a traditional environment.

Though this may not deter video-seeking users, translate this scenario to someone trying to access something more important away from a desktop, like their own Website. Once users have the option to access something remotely, they will rely on its ability to be there when they need it. Companies do not want to alienate their customers in a mobile environment, especially those less-tech savvy and disposed to higher income.

User functionality and UI design are such hot button issues these days that it is worth considering the impact the lack of these plug-ins have on the experience of the mobile user.

Consistent and Advanced Engagement

Apple really set the stage for how people viewed mobile browsing, but Android has raised that bar with advanced functionality, multiple application capability and mobile desktop approach to their OS. More and more users view their mobile devices as so much more than a phone; it’s their mobile computer, pocket robot, their way to check something while still in a meeting.

Silverlight and Flash can significantly impact the level of engagement by raising the bar further. They have ability to have a rich mobile user interface. The use of Flash and Silverlight can allow users to view rich graphical Web sites with better rendering, view videos in browser, load those videos faster, play online games, etc.

It creates a platform where people are not just accessing static Web sites and viewing text, they are engaging with it in a Web 2.0 fashion. This assists not only with advanced engagement, but also lends itself to replicating environments, discussed above.

Advertising Opportunities

So this point may not be a popular one due to general dislike towards advertising, but it is a compelling one no less. Combining the two points from above, advertisers and companies have a huge opportunity if:

Mobile users treat their phone like a mobile computer
Mobile users engage their phone in an interactive way
Mobile users constantly utilize their phones, using them anytime and anywhere.

This means that there is a huge opportunity for advertisers to configure their ads to the mobile environment, increase the number of impressions because they have greater and more consistent access to end-users. Additionally, with the advent of Silverlight and Flash for mobile, they will be able to make more engaging and rich advertising, rather that the static options available now.

Apple just entered into this space by releasing iAd, which is a pretty big advancement not only for mobile advertising, but the Apple customer paradigm. This means that the other front-runners in mobile advertising are looking to continually one-up Apple to compete for ad dollars, and they need Silverlight and Flash’s engagement qualities to do it. We have a whole previous blog post about iAd; feel free to read more about it here.

The stage has been set; we need these plug-ins on our mobile devices, stat. So what is out there now to tackle this and get more engaging mobile computing experiences? Let’s discuss.

Silverlight Out of Browser

Now it may seem like this is similar to Adobe’s AIR®, but let’s discuss why Silverlight Out of Browser is the real deal. It features a sandbox-like environment where Silverlight is not dependent on a browser, and is perfect for mobile. In addition, it gives application developers an environment to offer file system access, multi-touch development, host HTML content, and customize the trimmings, as well as deep zoom, smooth streaming and a myriad of other engaging qualities.

Amadeus Consulting’s creative team is considered experts with all things Silverlight, so naturally they were quite excited about the transition from the Web to Mobile. Feel free to follow-up with our team about how we can create a unique mobile experience.

Adobe AIR/Flash Lite®

Adobe AIR is a sub-set of the Flash product that is positioned as an out of browser application as well. It allows developers to build rich Internet applications that run out of the browser, on different kinds of operating systems, while leveraging the suite of tools that Flash offers: advanced video streaming, vector graphics and other media integration. The limitation of Adobe AIR is that it does not currently run in mobile environments.

Flash Lite is a version of the Flash suite that is optimized to run on mobile applications, featuring many of the same features as Adobe AIR. However, the limitation of Flash Lite is that it runs only through proprietary hardware browsers, (i.e. Nokia, Sony Ericsson developed mobile browsers), and not on the giants Internet Explorer®, Safari®, Firefox™, Chrome™.

So Flash or Silverlight?

Don’t worry, we’re not trying to talk you out of using Flash, we’re trying to pinpoint the specialties of Flash and Silverlight for different needs. Flash is an incredible platform that has been well-tested and an industry leader for a long time. Silverlight is somewhat new to the sector, but is proving to have a very forward thinking and engaging approach to development.

The beauty of our collective team knowledge is that we know how to develop on all of these platforms. We like to make recommendations for our clients from the offset that gathers needs, and creates a better fit for one of these platforms.

Feel free to contact us to discuss which of these rich Internet application software products suits your needs best.
