I love this Device Kindle

I’ve been showing my Device Kindle to everyone. This is the best purchase I’ve made in a long time. I’m a psychologist and it has been really helpful in doing some research for a PTSD therapy group I’m starting for members of the military.

My vision isn’t the best, so I really like the ability to change the text size. I use the text-to-speech feature at times. I’ve shown it to one kid who is dyslexic and he volunteered that he thinks it would be helpful to him. I showed it to a girl who also has a reading problem. I downloaded a sample of Twilight for her to try and switched on the text-to-speech. She couldn’t put the Kindle down, reading along with the audio. Her parents were very pleased and I’m sure they ordered a Device Kindle within a day or two.

My Device Kindle 2 arrived yesterday and I wanted to post a review before I forgot my initial impressions. The first thing I noted was the shipping package. It appeared to be in the standard Amazon brown box that all Amazon shipments come in, but upon closer look I saw that it was a custom package exclusively for the Device Kindle. The brown box had a pull tab to ease opening, no need for a cutting tool. Next to the pull tab were the words “Once upon a time…”. Cool.

The interior packaging was black and stylish, but it could have been a brown paper bag for all I cared. I opened it and looked at the Device Kindle. Right on the Device Kindle’s main screen is all you need to know to get the device setup. Basically, just plug into the wall to start charging and flip the switch to start using. It is that simple.

There was a Getting Started document and guide as well as a welcome letter, but after glossing over these quickly I found I didn’t need much help. You can pretty much figure everything out by just trying the buttons.

I went to the Device Kindle Store and noticed that it had a list of suggestion based on my past Amazon purchase and viewing history. Nice touch as I was able to easily find a book that I had intended to purchase. I clicked that books link, hit buy and within a few seconds I had the item in my library.

Reading on the Device Kindle 2 is practicaly effortless. With no previous experience with Kindle, I was still able to feel comfortable reading and paging within minutes. I read while exercising, lying in bed and on the train ride to work this morning. You really do forget the device is there. Ok, here goes. I don’t usually write reviews for products. That being said, I do rely heavily on reviews when I make a purchase. Everything from my new car(2009 Honda Fit, which is the BEST economy car on the planet, but that’s for another web site),to a deep fryer….Even movies and books.

I first learned of Kindle while watching Oprah of all things,(I’m Peggy’s husband writing this review)which I never do….I SWEAR!! She was talking about her favorite gadgets, and had the Amazon rep. there. They thoroughly reviewed the Kindle 2 Device, and by the time they were thru, I knew it was perfect for my 13 y.o. daughter. See, she reads about 3-4 books a week, wears the library out, and her room walls are covered with more books! We own a small townhouse, and I finally had to tell her to only buy “special books, ones she really had to own. She’s an Honors Student, jumped two grades in school, and is now a freshman in high school, earning college credits.

OK, enough bragging! The cost of the Kindle 2 Device made me wait awhile before ordering it, but Oprah had an offer for two weeks after her show, you enter her name in the promotion code area and you got .00 off. So I ordered it and it came in time for Christmas. When she opened it on Christmas morning, she had no idea what it was. I had saved the Oprah show on my dvr, and just played it for her. As the explanation went on, she began to “get it” and held it tighter and tighter! I spoil my daughter, and she received dozens of things for Christmas, psp, rock band, etc…. I SWEAR, for the first 48 hours, she didn’t touch any other gift!

Now, my wife starts to look at it, and proclaimed she wanted one for her birthday. So on 12/28,I ordered her one. It came on herb. day in Feb., and with her being an English major and a school teacher, she too quickly fell in love with it. I must explain, in between the first one and the second one, the Kindle 2 Device came out, and Amazon automatically sent her the Kindle 2 Device.At first I thought wait a minute, no memory chip, no exchangeable battery, a few other diff.’s. But within a day, I liked it way better.

Now my wife and daughter were sitting by the pool reading their kindles, and I commented on how I didn’t have one….. A week later mine showed up in the mail! My sneaky wife had ordered me one.

This thing is amazing!! Things you should know: If u end up like us with more than 1 Kindle 2 Device, any book bought by one can be shared by both, or in our case, all three. They are archived at amazon, just click on archive list, and you can access all books bought, even put on computer if you want. This also takes care of the memory issue with Kindle 2 Device.If by some chance you fill up your memory, you can delete books from your device, but it will ALWAYS be stored at Amazon for you. Did you know you can access the internet, such as espn, cnn, google, I even access my local paper. Most pics or video does not show though. People comment it can get expensive buying books, and it can, but there are dozens and dozens of books that are free also! Most of the classics, a lot of romance and adventure, it’s amazing.

Just browse books from least expensive and you’ll see what I mean. ANY SERVICE issues, we’ve had two, are promptly handled by Amazon. When you click on help on the Kindle 2 Device website, it asks you for a phone number, to call you right back. I thought sure they will. I swear, as soon as I pressed enter, my phone rang, it was Amazon and someone in America who spoke English!! Within seconds they reset my kindle and we were done. My wife’s kindle wasn’t holding a charge very long, when I called them, they ALREADY knew about it! How often she was charging it, how long it was on, etc….they promptly sent her a new Kindle 2 Device.

Sorry for the long review, in short, lol, BUY one, the are worth EVERY cent, you won’t regret it! Oh yeah, spend the extra ten bucks, and get an M-Edge book cover, they are way better than the cheaper Amazon cover. BTW, it doesn’t come with a cover.

Excellent, but…

The packaging is elegant cardboard(!). I’m not kidding.

Since I purchased Kindle Wireless Reading Device as a gift, the kindle did not come pre-registered to an Amazon account. Naturally, I wanted to read something more interesting than the user guide; so I called customer service to see what the deal is when transferring a Kindle Wireless Reading Device from one person to another. This call ended up being a fairly extensive conversation with an intelligent and articulate service-being about a great range of issues involving ownership transfer, sharing, privacy, and copyright protection.

Here is a summary of how kindles and the material purchased for them are related. When you buy reading material, it is associated with the Amazon account, and six licenses are granted with each purchase. That means that up to six Kindle Wireless Reading Device can be associated with an account, serially or in parallel. They will all have identical access to the materials bought on that account. Thus informed, I registered the kindle to my Amazon account and immediately bought a Jared Diamond book (). Seconds later it was aboard the kindle. Way easy, just like they said. There’s a bunch of free stuff available, too, including the Bible. Worth every penny, probably even more.

Now to the thing itself. Very, very nice. It looks good, feels good in the hand, has good buttons, which are easy to operate on purpose but not so easy accidentally. But how does it read, you ask! Extremely well. In fact, it’s much easier to read than a glossy magazine because of its low-glare surface, which hardly shows fingerprints. I can read it without strain in low light, high light, bright sunlight. It is easier to hold than a real book, because it’s not always trying to close itself. What’s more, it’s easy to change font size. Heck, who needs fonts? A couple of tolerably good robot voices will read to you, male or female, slow, medium, or fast. I tried reading to the robots but got no response. Black and white illustrations display fairly well, even photos. The kindle is the size of a medium size book, but much thinner. Its screen is the size of a small paperback.

There is an unobtrusive cursor “|” which is moved around the page with a nubbin-sized joystick (the “five-way controller”). While reading, the page’s bottom line shows the first line of the built-in New Oxford American Dictionary’s definition for the word after the cursor. A button click brings up the dictionary, starting with that entry. A most excellent feature.

It’s very easy to page forward or backward through the text with the dedicated buttons. It takes about second to page to or fro. Faster would be even better. You can get to the Table of Contents pretty quickly and thence to the beginning of any chapter. The kindle does not recognize page numbers, since they would change radically when you change font size; so Amazon provides the notion of location which is display independent. The bottom of the page shows the percent of the way through, the current location range displayed, and the location number for the end of the text. You can go to an arbitrary location.

You can also set bookmarks and return to them. Unfortunately, if the book in question has an index, it may not be useful, because it probably trades in page numbers, not locations. However, by way of compensation, you may search for arbitrary text strings. Kindle kindly displays the context around the locations where it finds the sought string and lets you jump to any of these locations and back to the search results at will. Search works well, better even than most indexes, and can do things no index can do.

I tried reading in bed. It was much easier to hold and use the kindle than any kind of book. It was more like holding a rigid magazine.

The Kindle Wireless Reading Device comes with a charging cable. I thought, that’s ok, but do I have to supply a USB cable to connect to a computer? The answer is no: The supplied device is a USB cable that plugs into a compact wall charger. Very nice.

The big drawback, so far, is the huge issue of illiberal rights management. Related to that is Amazon interposing itself between your documents and the kindle. You may not directly put documents onto your own kindle. You must send a document to Amazon for conversion to the kindle’s ultra-secret proprietary format, which they then return to you via Internet for free or via 3G network for ten cents. This is a privacy and control issue and not a trivial one.

In summary, it’s totally wonderful if you ignore the digital rights management and privacy issues.

No Wireless Access Not A Problem

Thank you to all who have submitted reviews. I think I read every one before taking the plunge and ordering the Reading Device Kindle 2. I love it!

First, I bought it because I’m running out of room to store books and, second, I never buy hardbacks and have to wait until they come out in paperback. I don’t like reading hardback books and they’re expensive – problem is solved with the Reading Device Kindle.

Definitely get a cover, as the Reading Device Kindle 2 is slippery. I returned the Patagonia (cheap) and ordered the M-Edge Go, which I love.

The main reason I might have returned the Reading Device Kindle 2 is that, unfortunately, my rural home is not in the wireless coverage area, which I didn’t know until I tried. I can drive 20 minutes to find wireless access or download books to my computer and then to the Reading Device Kindle, which I thought would be a tremendous hassle, as my rural internet connection is agonizingly slow.

But, after taking the Reading Device Kindle on vacation and loving it, I thought I’d at least try the computer to Kindle download route. It’s very fast, as the files are small, and the transfer to the Reading Device Kindle was just as fast – whole process took about 3 minutes (and I have very slow internet access).

So if you are hesitating as I was because of not living in an area covered by the Reading Device Kindle wireless network, it’s not a problem!

I have to put in a complimentary word for the Kindle customer service people – they were very patient and answered all my questions – wonderful customer service!

Tested in Iraq

Last year, before being deployed to Iraq with the Army, I had a problem–I had limited space to pack books. The Reading Device Kindle(at the time K1) was the obvious solution. I was a little unsure how the Reading Device Kindle would hold up in the desert heat and sand, but I decided to go ahead and give it an unofficial field test. After my first few months in Iraq, I was so glad that I purchased it. I didn’t have whispernet access, but I did have (a very slow) satellite internet connection in my room. When I wanted to purchase a book I would log-on to Amazon, download the book to my computer, and transfer it to my Reading Device Kindle.

All of those steps took less than five minutes, even with a slow connection. I wish I could say that I made it home with my Reading Device Kindle, but on a bus in Kuwait, a week before I came home, I accidently sat on it–it didn’t survive. I do, however, plan to purchase another Reading Device Kindle sometime in the future. I would highly recommend the Reading Device Kindle to soldiers and civilian contractors working in Iraq or Afghanistan…just don’t sit on it.

It’s how you use it that counts

I’ve been tracking Kindle Amazon reviews ever since the first model came out. Once the second Kindle came out, and I saw the majority of reviewers slant to more of the postiive side, I decided that it was time to invest. After using it for about a week, I am quite satisfied — but you should understand that I didn’t buy a Kindle Amazon with the intent of “recovering my investment”, as it seems like so many other folks want to do.

Yes, the Kindle Amazon is expensive. If I wanted to buy the Kindle strictly from a return-on-investment perspective, I wouldn’t have bought it at a 0 price point. I don’t read enough for the Kindle Amazon to recover the money I would save if I just continually bought best selling hardcovers. I bought it as a gadget, as a way to get me more into reading, make it more fun, and make it more convenient for the occasional travel or novel in bed. From that perspective, I’m very happy with my choice.

I also don’t use all of the functionality to the fullest extent possible. I don’t highlight, take notes, or anything like that, and I only occasionally buy books. So take this review for what it’s worth.

Here’s what I like the most:
— Lets you read the way you want to read. Books are easy to find, sample, purchase, and then read (since you can adjust text size to your liking).
— Instant access to the web & bookstore without monthly fees. It’s not the bset web browser, but to look at simple static content on the go, it’s more than fine. Even with newspapers and magazines, you don’t HAVE to buy a monthly subscription. Once you have the Kindle, you are allowed to purchase a single issue if you want.
— Easy navigation between books, lists, and the web once you get the nag of it.
— The built-in dictionary. I don’t have to swallow my pride anymore and glaze over words I don’t understand — I can look them up on the fly. GREAT idea.
— Battery life (with the wireless off).

Here’s what I like the least:
— Book prices for books that have been around a while. Amazon itself lists older best selling paperbacks for a penny used plus shipping. So I basically have to pay a premium for a book that came out five years ago if I want to read it on Kindle, since I can get it cheaper on paper.
— No cover shipped with Kindle. Tack on at least for a suitable protective cover, unless you want to use the original packaging (like I did for a week while waiting for my cover — I don’t recommend doing this, it’s bulky).
— Text-to-speech is okay but clunky.
— Samples are a little unpredictable in terms of what you will get. I assumed you received up to the end of the first chapter in all cases, but it seems to vary widely by the book.
— No backlight. I understand Amazon took this out to preserve battery life, and I would have done the same thing. Hopefully in the next version they find a way for the two to co-exist.
— No integrationw with Amazon wish list. There is no way to directly add a Kindle book to your Amazon wish list, and even if you could, you can’t access your wish list from the Kindle Amazon. This is tough for me since I use my wish list as an all-encompassing “here’s what I want but don’t want to pay for right now” list. My workaround though seems to work. Go into the Kindle edition on Amazon.com, download the sample, then go down to Customer Reviews & click on “see all reviews”. Once there, you can add it to your wish list. Then I just leave the sample in my Kindle Amazon until I read it and decide one way or the other whether I really want the book.

It doesn’t really bother me that there’s not a color or touch screen. But then you’re reading the review of a guy who still uses a 1st generation iPOD mini & sees no need to upgrade.

Overall, as a casual reader, I’m very pleased with my purchase. I didn’t really do much comparison shopping with other readers, so I can’t speak to how it’s better or worse than anything else. I also haven’t experienced tech support yet, on which I’ve seen mised stories. But overall, I’m quite happy.

I hope if they come out with a Kindle Amazon 3 that they give Kindle Amazon 2 owners an opportunity to upgrade at a major discount (which they didn’t do with Kindle 1).
