Can Google challenge Microsoft’s dominance in 2010?
In 2009, Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. were fighting for each other’s market share and revenue stream by introducing new products and updated versions of existing ones. Various analysts predict that the year 2010 will see more action between the two giants as they compete in the fields of Internet search, operating systems, enterprise applications and web browsers. While, Microsoft leads in operating system, enterprise applications and web browsers market, Google holds the lead in search arena. However, in the field of web based applications, Google is slowly snatching the market share from Microsoft. For Google, it’s all about expanding, but for Microsoft, it’s about sustaining the lead in the world market. Meanwhile, few analysts believe that Google is the only one that could rattle Microsoft. Here, we discuss various territories, where the two giants fighting head on.Internet Search ShareAs per the November market share, Google remained the dominant leader with 65.6% share, whereas Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing reported 17.5% and 10.3% share. Besides real-time search interface, Google has also introduced new up gradations in its search engine, which include Google Goggles (a photo-based search), Instant Voice Translation, Location based search and Near Me Now service. Further, the company also introduced its faster variant called Google Caffeine.Google earns 90% of its revenue from web-ads, therefore to check the company prospects; Microsoft has to cut their ad revenue. Therefore, against Google’s monopoly, Microsoft and Yahoo had joined hands in the search and Bing will become the default search engine on Yahoo, creating a search player with close to 30% share compared with Google’s 65%. Further, Microsoft has developed the feature-rich updated version of its Bing maps and introduced another application, called Local Lens to figure out exact location as well.Operating systemsMicrosoft is presently enjoying 92% share in the OS market, whereas Google is under the process of developing its Chrome operating system for light PCs like netbooks. Last month, Google had released its source code for developers. It is reported that the search giant will also release its Android OS based netbook and Smartphone in 2010. The new systems based on Chrome OS will support cloud computing and will be web-connected via Wi-Fi and play only web-based applications such as Google Docs. Hence, Microsoft has to formulate suitable technologies and up gradations to counter the Google emergence in the OS arena.Web-based AppsIn last two-three years, Google has twisted the pattern of Microsoft’s Office market share. Consumers are now using web based apps of Google, which is available for as low as @ $50 per user, per year.Microsoft is aware of the growing threat from the search giant, and will counter it in Office 2010. The new productivity suite will include Web-based versions of its most commonly used applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for the first time. Microsoft holds more than 90% share of office tools.
Web browserAccording to December market share report, with 4.63% share, Google’s Chrome web browser has surpassed Apple’s Safari (4.46%) to become the world’s third-most popular browser in just 16 months after its debut. In comparison, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) has posted a drop of 0.92% to 62.7% in December. Further, IE reports continuous slip in its share since the second half of 2009.
Google Set to Challenge Apple’s Iphone
Google is set to develop its own mobile telephone and wireless Internet device to rival that of Appleâs iPhone. The technology community`s nickname for the Google project is called gPhone. However it is not creating the telephone for sale, but they are hoping to persuade wireless communication systems and cellular telephone makers to use their own software in this device.
The plan of action is to have Google offset the advertising costs of manufacturers to make the devices more appealing to companies to climb on board.
According to Byron Acohido of the USA Today, âGoogle`s widely anticipated — and top secret — GPhone mobile phone project could trump Apple`s glitzy iPhone — by going low cost and low tech.â
Google recently acquired Finnish company Jaiku who held a number of Short Message Service Patents (SMS), which is the technology that enables the exchanging of short messages between cell phones.
Google currently holds a 29% share of the US Market over 16% to Yahoo according to internet marketing research firm eMarketer, and would like nothing more than to control the mobile device market such as cell phones, blackberryâs and more, including their own GPhone.
On this news Googleâs stock rose to a whopping $600 per share recently, speculating that Googleâs profits may climb to as high as 50% over last yearâs numbers.
Acohido reports that, âRichard Doherty, research director at The Envisioneering Group, claims Google is driving toward getting device makers to produce basic handsets equipped with a “Gbutton” that takes users right to a Google texting screen.â According to Doherty, âTheir goal is to get GPhone texters in the habit of querying its vast databases for directions, phone numbers, movie times or restaurant tips and woo advertisers to sponsor GPhone-delivered answers.â
Apparently the hush-hush top secret project by Google (said tongue in cheek of course), is already in a phase where a model is being designed with rumors abound that includes a Google browser and access to Gmail and YouTube (both of which are Google operated).
The first question that all consumers will ask is of course, the cost. As we all remember the iPhone was introduced at a whopping price of around $600, only to have weeks later, Apple irritate its customers by dropping the price $200 after the initial buzz of the device wore off.
Google insiders claim that the GPhone will be offered at a fraction of the cost of the iPhone, Blackberry and Palm Trio. The reason why they can offer it low is Googleâs ability to offer advertising to companies, but one drawback according to Acohido, âcell phone carriers want a cut of the advertising revenueâ. A cut that many say Google isnât ready to let go, just yet.
Although nothing has been released as far as an agreement between Google and a cellular provider, manufacturers are said to have devices ready to go and according to Acohido, âcould be ready to be on the shelves in a matter of weeks.â
The Gphone will be aimed to the younger consumer, so if you are an early 20-something or you have teenagers, chances are this may be the next hot item on itâs way just it time, of course, for Christmas.

Learning everything there is to know about online marketing is not easy without practical application of these theoretical concepts. Such is the objective behind The Google Online Marketing Challenge. This competition, which is open to undergraduate and graduate students only, aims to teach participants how to achieve effective online marketing through meticulous marketing analysis.Competition mechanicsThe Google Online Marketing Challenge essentially requires participants to optimize, manage, and update their own Google AdWords campaign. Participants are given $200 to spend on a Google AdWords online advertising campaign for the website of a particular small-to-medium business that they choose to partner with. During the competition’s three-week duration, the teams optimize their campaigns as they see fit. Two reports, one detailing the initial campaign plans and one indicating how the campaign ended, are submitted as output. The Challenge is open to students from any higher education institutions. Student teams can have their professors serve as advisers for the contest. Professors using the competition as a supplementary class activity are expected to use sufficient class time to cover essential online marketing concepts and introduce Google AdWords technology. What is Google AdWords? When Google search results relevant to the user’s query are displayed, relevant AdWords are displayed on the page as well. These ads are separated from the search results and are labeled as “Sponsored Links.” These ads can be seen on the top and the right side of the Google search results page. AdWords is a great online marketing strategy. Advertisers are challenged to design their own ads for their business using keywords that they feel users will commonly search for. AdWords makes online marketing easier for advertisers, as they only have to supply keywords to promote their businesses and product or service offerings. Judging criteria Teams are judged based on five different criteria for their AdWords Campaign. The five criteria are as follows: account structure, optimization techniques, account and activity reporting, performance and budget, and lastly, relevance. Using these criteria, teams are divided into 7 categories based on how they and their ads fared under the deliberation of the panel of judges. AdWords tipsDesigning effective AdWords campaigns may initially seem like an easy task. However, it requires more than just writing a good ad campaign for AdWords to be of any significance. This is because in the world of online marketing, different strategies must be employed to be able design effective ads. One useful technique in designing an AdWords campaign is using keywords that will potentially match users’ phrases exactly. The more an ad’s keywords match the phrase searched by Internet users, the more likely the particular ad will be a top Sponsored Link. A great hands-on experience for studentsThe Google Online Marketing Challenge provides students with a great opportunity to acquire real world online marketing experience. The Challenge is a great venue for students to apply theoretical concepts learned in class. Additionally, it is a great way for students to possibly help local businesses improve their marketing effectiveness.
