Landing Your Dream Job: The Art of Sucking Up (a.k.a Impressing the Boss)

Landing Your Dream Job: The Art of Sucking Up (a.k.a Impressing the Boss)

While many people think that finding a job is hard to do, keeping the job can be half the battle. With the way the economy is these days, turnover rates in many industries is higher than ever, and it takes a strong professional to hang onto their jobs for an extended period of time. While it is a joke among co-workers, there is some merit to be had when it comes to impressing your boss. While brown-nosing and conniving are never encouraged, there is a level of ’sucking up’ that must be done in order to hang onto your job.

Why Worry About Impressing the Boss?

While many people feel that it is never okay to suck up to the boss, to a certain degree it is necessary. No, this does not mean to spy on your co-workers and deliver top secret information to the big wigs about the comings and goings of your peers, because you have to work with them too. What it does mean is going that extra mile to prove yourself to your employer and show them that they made the right decision when hiring you. If it ever comes time to make cutbacks or other tough decisions, you want to be one of the employees that stand out in the mind of your boss as somebody worth their paycheck, somebody worth having around for the long-term.

The DOs of Impressing Your Superiors

For those who may be having a tough time discerning between what are some of the good ways to impress your boss, here are some good ideas for ways in which it is okay to go out of your way to go the extra mile. Some or all may apply to your field of employment.

- Make an extra cup of coffee when you see they are swamped; one for you and one for them.

- Hold the door open when they pass by and you are already standing near it. People appreciate that.

- Ask them how their day is going when you pass them in the hall.

- Pick up the mail or the newspaper if you get there before they do in the morning.

- Start the coffee pot in the morning or refill the coffee pot if you make the last cup before the end of the day.

The DON’Ts of Impressing Your Superiors

- Compliment them on their outfit every day. Once in a while is fine, but too much is borderline harassment.

- Tattle to your boss about what other people in the office or workplace are doing wrong. Mind your own business at work.

- Get involved in their personal life. This can be dangerous down the line; know only what they offer you about their personal life.

- Show up too early or stay too late. Chances are they are not willing to pay you for it unless they ask you to do so.

Making an impression in your boss’s mind is important if you expect to be very successful in your place of employment. There is a difference between brown-nosing and standing out; it is important to find that balance to have true success in your workplace.

Impress Your Boss And Get His Vote In Those Web Meetings

Impress Your Boss And Get His Vote In Those Web Meetings

Have you been in the dumps lately with your job because your boss is always after your scalp? Before you try to change your cell phone number so he can’t yell at you when you’re having a break at the water cooler, change your tactics instead. Surprise him in your next web meetings with a cool PowerPoint presentation.

When the Boss Is Mad

You’ll know when the boss is mad. Aside from flaring nostrils and piercing stares, he or she is always looking for ways to crucify you. Working with him has come to a point that you’re becoming a nervous wreck. You know you earned that ire because of your poor performance during previous web meetings.

But it is not the end of the world yet. You have time to redeem yourself in the next web meetings, so get yourself busy with those weekly reports and make your PowerPoint presentation early. Don’t rush. Any changes or additions can be done ahead of time. Just make it a point to update it and go over it with a magnifying glass to spot errors. You don’t want to be caught with your pants down again.

Time for Guerilla Tactics

There are several ways to put up a good show for the next web meetings. If yours is a consolidated report, remind the people to submit their reports ahead of time. While waiting for their submissions, you can go online and search for PowerPoint templates you can use for your report.

Enliven up your PowerPoint presentation with animations. Of course make it relevant to what you have to say. Say your piece briefly – about 7 to 10 words per slide. If you don’t know all the techniques, ask around. Or you can ask your kid brother to jazz up your presentation. Just for once, you can pay somebody to put together your piece after you have all the reports to consolidate.

Limit your time at the water cooler. Never mind if you’ll miss some episodes of the office romance or the latest gossip. You’ve got to focus. Those time-wasting encounters will eat into your productivity. Perhaps that’s a reason why the boss is implacable.

Perhaps you’re always late, often arriving an hour late after the boss gets in. That’s another irritant for the big boss, so rev up the volume of your alarm clock at home and ask your partner to help you in this crusade to gain the boss’s confidence in your capabilities.

Look up some tips on web meetings. If the boss asks you to facilitate the web conference, jump at the chance and immediately go online to find out what you are supposed to do. But don’t fiddle with your report. Work on it JUST IN CASE the boss’s devious mind goes to work. Just pray it is a small scale event, something you can handle. If it’s a huge crowd, sweet-talk your boss to let the web meetings service to handle it. Drop the hint that it pays to impress people to get their business, especially if the agenda is a sales presentation for a big company. The boss will listen.

On D Day

Arrive at the office early with your report ready for showing. You’ll have time to relax before the conference. Wear your best suit to further boost your confidence. Finally, when you give your report, don’t just read from your PowerPoint presentation. Instead, give brief elaborations and be ready to answer killer questions. That’s how you’ll get your boss approval and vote in the next web meetings.

Reporting during web meetings need not be dull with effective PowerPoint presentations. You can sample free web conferencing and learn how convenient and economical it is to have your next conference on the web. Visit Web-Conferencing-Zone.com today.

Apple Ipod Classic: the Real Boss

Author admin    Category Misc     Tags , , , ,

The new Apple iPod Classic is a portable media player coming from Apple Inc. There have been six generations of the iPod Classic that use a 1.8″ hard drive for storage. Until the sixth generation, these media players were called, simply iPods, but later they are referred to as iPod Classics. The Apple iPods with color displays use graphics and text, with sliding animations. These iPods from Apple used to come with five buttons but in their later generations these buttons are integrated into the click wheel design that gives an uncluttered, minimalist interface. Apple iPod comes with an operating system that is stored on its dedicated storage medium. Every model of iPod Classic has a 32 MB of RAM, even though the 60 and 80 GB fifth generation have 64 MB.

The first model of iPod Classic was introduced by Apple on October 23, 2001. The first iPod had a 5 GB hard drive that was capable of storing 1,000 songs encoded using MP3. The innovations of Apple iPod included its small size, with a 1.8″ hard drive, while its competitors were using a 2.5″ hard drive at the time, and its easy-to-use navigation, that was controlled with a mechanical scroll wheel, a center OK button and 4 auxiliary buttons around the wheel. The Apple iPod arrived with a rated battery life of 12 hours. Apple introduced a 10 GB model of the iPod classic on March 2002. The second generation of iPod Classic was launched on July 17, 2002. The new updated version had a redesigned hold switch along with an added cover to the Fire Wire port. The mechanical wheel of the old model was then replaced with a touch-sensitive wheel. The front place had the same rounded corners and edges.

Apple began selling PC-compatible versions of the iPod with the second generation. It came with a 4-pin to 6-pin Fire Wire adapter and were bundled with Musicmatch Jukebox instead of iTunes. Apple unveiled its first limited edition iPods, on December 2002

5 Hot Tech Gifts for the Boss Or Employee

Finding the right Boss Gift or Employee gift is always a problem at this time of the year, so it might prove helpful if you turned towards technology for a solution. Every holiday season has special hot tech gift items that everyone wants to see on their wish list, and this season is proving no different. So this side of a Zhu Zhu Hamster, here are five tech gifts you might consider putting on your list for that favorite boss or employee:

1. E-Readers. In case you’re wondering, E-Readers is just as the name indicates, these are hand-held electronic devices which let users read books. They are also called digital or electronic readers. Probably the best known E-Reader is the Amazon Kindle which was introduced in 2007 and according to a recent Time article, Amazon has already sold 1.7 million units. Not to be outdone, Barnes & Noble has launched its own E-Reader call the NOOK , which retails for around $260. There’s enough memory for holding 1,500 books (2 GB) and there’s a microSD slot which could give you another 16 GB more.

Other companies are also offering E-Readers such as the Sony Reader, Asus Eee-reader and Irex Digital Reader. According to the Association of American Publishers, total revenue from digital-book downloads has risen 149% this year, while they estimate e-book readers sales to top 3 million by Dec. 31. Plus, according to Forrester Research around 1 million of these gadgets could be sold this holiday season, and sales in 2010 are projected to double, to 6 million.

2. Netbooks. These are the smaller cousins of the laptop, often referred to as mini-laptops. They usually have screens of 10 inches, although some displays can be slightly larger or smaller. Netbooks have smaller Intel Atom processors, one GB of RAM and run Windows XP. Prices are well under $500. Keep in mind, the category of “netbook” is a fairly recent one – Asustek launched the netbook category when it released its first Eee PC in the fall of 2007.

Some of the most popular Netbooks include ASUS Eee PC 1000HE, Lenovo Ideapad S10, Acer Aspire One, MSI Wind U100 and the HP Mini 2140. But shop around because there are other very good Netbooks on the market which also deserve a prominent spot under anyone’s Christmas tree.

3. Blu-ray DVD Players. Blu-ray technology which offers glorious High Definition 1080p images and Superior sound, is becoming extremely popular with the buying public. Prices for Blu-ray DVD Players are also coming down which is further fueling the demand for these high-tech items of the moment. Keep in mind, to fully enjoy the benefits of a Blu-ray system you will need a full 1080p High Definition Television, the larger the better!

Some of the best rated Blu-ray players include the Sony PlayStation 3, OPPO BDP-83, LG BD390, Panasonic DMP-BD60k and the Samsung BD-P3600 Blu-ray DVD Player. Again, prices have fallen drastically and if you shop around you may even find ones listed for under $100.

4. Smart Phones. PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants), also known as smart phones are always an appropriate gift for a boss or an employee. These hand-held electronic devices are becoming even more dazzling and feature rich. Pretty soon, they will probably be bringing you your morning coffee! All joking aside, the smart phone is proving to be a popular gift as prices have dropped. The Apple iPhone has also opened up this market to a broader audience, further fueling the demand for this popular tech gift.

Some of the best rated smart phones and PDAs include the whole Blackberry line, the Palm TX, the Sony CLIE series and of course, the Apple iPhone. Again, shopping around will get you a lower price but be wary of Free PDAs offers in return for a service plan, unless that’s what you’re looking for.

5. Gaming Laptops. These laptops have high-performance Graphics Chips, fast powerful processors, tons of memory (including dedicated Video RAM), large high resolution displays usually backed up with a Blu-ray Optical drive. Despite their somewhat flashy exteriors, gaming laptops are not only used for gaming, many business people, graphic artists, architects, video producers… enjoy the benefits of having a powerful laptop which can do heavy-duty graphics without crashing. Of course, any boss or employee can also play video games on them too.

Some highly rated gaming laptop include the ASUS G71Gx-A2, Toshiba Qosmio X505 – Q850, MSI GT740, Alienware M17x and Rock X790 (Clevo D900F) which is basically the same laptop as the Eurocom D900F Panther, Falcon Northwest Fragbook DRX and the AVADirect Clevo D900F Core i7. Clevo is the Taiwanese OEM (original equipment manufacturer) of high-end quality laptop components, which these ODMs (original design manufacturers) such as Rock, Sager and Eurocom use to build their gaming rigs.

Check over these five high-tech devices and you may find a suitable boss gift and/or employee gift that will be very much appreciated by the receiver. Shop around and you will probably find many of these tech gifts at a very suitable price; if all else fails, go with the Zhu Zhu Hamster!

Web Designers And Small Business Owners, Should I Charge My Boss For Making Him A Website?

I am a secretary for a home security business (fire/smoke alarms, burglar alarms, security systems, etc). It is a small business, operated from the owner’s home. They have many clients and aren’t in any danger of closing from lack of funds, but the business has gotten by purely through word of mouth (client testimonials) and small phone book and/or newspaper ads. I know that a website would greatly help the business and bring in more clientele, more accounts, and broaden the possibilities for the future. I know my boss would love the idea of a website and I am HTML literate and can build websites sufficiently enough in programs like Dreamweaver for them to be professional and easily navigable.
My problem, is that I don’t know how much to charge him for the website maintenance, building, etc. I am not a web designer by trade, it has been purely a hobby of mine to fiddle with HTML. I’m not looking to charge him as if I were a professional web designer, but I don’t want to do all of this additional work free of charge — you know it takes time to design, build, and upkeep a website. I plan on being with this job for a long while and even if I left for another job, he would probably want me to maintain the website anyway. [He is a friend of the family and is not particularly computer savvy and doesn't know where to start looking for a dependable other to maintain the website].. Should I charge him a flat fee for the website creation and then a monthly fee? Or should I just get him to increase my salary a bit and make it a part of my job description so that it is a normal duty? Web designers and small business owners, please, your experience here would be much appreciated! I want your opinion, what should I do? Thank you!!
