Keywords, Competition and Being Number One- Uncovering the Algorithm

Keywords, Competition and Being Number One- Uncovering the
Algorithm

By following these steps you will see that most closely guarded
secret– the search algorithm. Remember the movie “the Matrix?”
The Matrix is there, you just can’t see it. So is the search
algorithm.

It’s easy to pay a Search Engine Optimizer to give your pages
some ranking power. Unfortunately, given the inherent time
factor involved in climbing the ranks, your money may be long
gone before you know if you’ve spent your money well.

THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL

Forget any advertisement you see for instant number one search
results or automated this or that. Most are scams, and the ones
that aren’t might get you positioned, but it will be very short
lived.

Search engine optimization is an ongoing process. Achieving and
maintaining a high rank, especially on highly competitive
keywords, requires constant maintenance. If you do find a
legitimate SEO firm, it is well worth the money to pay their
monthly maintenance fee and let them continue to help you after
the initial project. At least for 6 months or a year as you
establish yourself.

In this article we’ll look at some of the intricate and complex
tasks of optimizing a page for long term ranking power. You will
learn how to read between the code and the content to find what
is necessary to bring you to the top. Being number one is easy
to say, but is quickly overwhelming when you stare at tens of
thousands of pages you want to out rank. So how do you begin?
The starting line on the road to that first page SERP (search
engine results page) ranking is not as blurry as you might
think. In fact, you can uncover the starting line, the route,
and all the scenery along the way to the finish line without
knowing the search engine algorithm.

STEP 1- YOUR KEYWORDS ARE THE CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT OF GRUELLING
DAYS OF WORK

If you have investments in the stock market you know how much
research and thought goes into choosing those securities. Now
take that same effort and multiply it by three. That’s how much
planning and revision your keywords should take.

A simple, broad key phrase like “shoes” could hypothetically
bring you up in a countless stream of different searches.
Women’s shoes, baby shoes, sneakers, high heels, etc. If somehow
you manage to settle into a good ranking (which would be
difficult) you would have more traffic on your site than you
could handle. But traffic is worthless is it doesn’t get to it’s
destination. Chances are, you weren’t that destination.

Your keywords must be focused and precise, specific to what you
are selling. Using a key phrase like “Gucci mens black leather
loafer” will bring a targeted lead to your site. You may not
reach as many people as the more generalized keyword, but the
people that do come to you have a much deeper interest in the
specific product you are selling.

Therefore you have much greater chance of converting that
targeted lead to a sale. Your keywords are your magic beans,
your winning lotto numbers, your energizer bunnies, your sales
force, whatever you want to call them. They must be perfect.

STEP 2- WANT TO BE NUMBER ONE? LOOK AT WHO ALREADY IS

Competition Analysis- no SEO book can give you this information.

Now take your keyword list and type them into a search engine.
Who comes up in the first ten results? That company that is
number one is because they have most closely matched what the
search engine algorithm says should be number one. You can learn
a great deal from them.

A. INTERNAL FACTORS

Take that number one page, and the other top 9 pages and study
them, look at the code, break them down. You are looking at the
first half of what is needed to rank in the top 10 pages for
your key phrases on that particular search engine. The list of
what to look for is enormous.

Studying the Internal Factors on a page is taking it apart to
see how it’s put together. Not how it works, but statistical
research into the precise construct and layout of keywords and
phrases in relation to each other within the page.

Start with these areas:

URL address, Page Title, Meta description, Meta Keywords, First
sentence on the page, Body copy, Bold or Emphasized Phrases, H1
or other tags, Alt Tags, Navigation system

In each of those sections, look at:

Keyword densities- the number of times your phrase and each word
in your phrase appears compared to the text around it

Where and in how many times the same phrase and words appear in
different sections

The word and character position of each phrase in each

The total number of characters

The total number of words

The quality and thought of the content

Beginning with these comparisons should keep you quite busy for
a while. A spreadsheet is quite useful. Some commercial products
are also available that can make this daunting task much more
feasible. Keep looking for other patterns and differences. You
want to duplicate them in your own page. NOT copy and steal. You
want to mimic the patterns that are bringing that page to the
position it is. Then move onto to examining the external factors
of these pages.

B. EXTERNAL FACTORS

External factors of a web page deal with the links to, from and
within a web page, both inside the same site, and out into the
web. This analysis usually takes more time because it involves
more dissection of pages beyond the one you’re trying to
optimize. In this analysis as with Internal Factors, you want to
compare and contrast your page versus the top 10 competitors,
find similarities and differences. Here is a list of criteria to
get you started.

Number of internal (to the same site) on that page

Number of external links

Number of links pointing TO that page* (see below for details)

The link/anchor text- which keywords are used and where

Google Page Rank value of incoming links

Alexa Rank of incoming links

*To get a listing of the links that point to a site, type the
following into Google, MSN and Yahoo searches:
“link:www.domainname.com”. Google tends to only show a small
portion of the links back, but MSN and Yahoo will give you much
more pertinent data.

Now you want to compare the content on each of these pages to
the one they point to. Is it of similar theme, in what context
does the link back appear and where. Subject of much debate, the
consensus is that Google Page Rank does not mean what it used
to. However, if it is in some fashion a measure of how
significant or “important” a site is, it is worth looking more
closely at the sites that link back that are of high page rank.

EVEN A SURGEON USES TOOLS

Now, this is definitely a ton of work to do all by hand. There
are software programs that can help do some of the digging and
mathematical computations for you, figuring out densities and
organizing information.

Tools like this are definitely ones a professional SEO will have
in their arsenal. But remember, these are tools, not miracle
workers. It takes a human being to evaluate and realize
connections, similarities, draw conclusions and interpret the
data. Then, you have to extrapolate this data.

Remember, you want to do one better than every site you just
examined. To do that you have to draw some conclusions and make
some educated guesses and link to even better sites.

FINAL THOUGHTS

You have access to the inner workings of every page that you
want to beat. Learn from them and do one better. This process is
not a one-time shot. It is ongoing. Check your key phrases every
week. Do the same people still rank in the top ten?

Some have probably moved. Remember too that they’re going to
adapt to maintain their positions too. If you want the ranks,
you have to spend the time, and not just once, or pay someone to
do it for you.

Don’t ever believe anyone who says they can guarantee any kind
of results. And ask them how they will optimize your pages. If
they explain to you something like the above, then you’ve
probably got yourself someone experienced and honest. You money
will be well spent and you’ll quickly recover it

Marketing and Being a Guerrilla

Marketing and Being a Guerrilla

What is Guerilla Marketing and how can you use it? Guerilla Marketing is the use of avant-garde marketing techniques intended to get greatest results from the smallest amount of resources, which let’s face it; in today’s economy plays an important role. Today, guerrilla marketing is a non-traditional, low-cost, and highly effective marketing endeavor, which when used properly can reap huge rewards for the diligent user.

To further your career or business, it is imperative that you market in ways that are new and unique in order to catch someone’s eye and get ahead of your competition. The first step into the guerilla marketing zone is to think outside the box. What does that mean? Don’t do what everyone else is doing. Here area few ideas to get you started:

1. The use of podcasts has become very popular in the past years, so why not use them to broadcast your business, book or product, helping to expose it to a lot of people who may have never seen it before. Make sure that you plug your website and where they can purchase your products.

2. Check out your library system! Why not go to your local library and see if can do a free speaking engagement there in exchange for a percentage of your sales of product after your show. Libraries are in dire need of funds. Additionally that will help you align yourself as an expert in your field for future marketing purposes.

3. A very easy and free way (free is for me!) to get your name out there and seen is to write reviews on every product your own, have used, read or CDs you have listened to. Then post the reviews on places like amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com. Amazon and Barnes and Noble will no longer let you put a two or three line sentence / bio at the end of each review that has any personal information so don’t go there. Recently they changed their policy and will take down all of your reviews should you do this and they find them. However, you can post your URL in the Real Names attributes. When you post your reviews, put your vanity email address inside your “real name.” While those sites won’t allow you to post your URL, if your URL is part of your “real name,” they don’t say a word. Check out amazon.com and look for one of my reviews. This is what you will see: “Jaci Rae raeofhope@jacirae.com.” (Don’t use a real email address or you will end up with a lot of spam. That is my website, but the email address if fake.) Why is this an important step? Because people will read your reviews and you get your name out there. Most consumers are Internet savvy and if they are interested in you, will check you out.

4. Junk snail mail. Why not use it to your advantage? When you receive junk snail mail, many times inside with their ads they have kindly sent a pre-paid envelope. Why not put your brochure, business card or a letter inside announcing your product with a note that says something like, “Since you were kind enough to send me your information, I am returning the favor.” Also, inside of all the bills you have to pay do the same. I have gotten business doing this.

With a few ideas of your own and a little leg work you will be surprised at what your efforts will yield. A very important part of the guerilla marketing process is the business side. The trick is that if you want different results and what you have been trying in the past always turns out the same, then you must do something different! Guerrilla marketing is what you need to do differently. Go after your audience with fervor and diligence, but think outside the box to get the results you desire and the exposure for your product that you need.

The greatest reward of being a freelance copywriter is to earn a good income while working from the comfort of your home. Below, I have discussed some special strategies to become a successful copywriter by writing freelance articles.

Provide the best service

While it may sound obvious, but often we fail to provide the best service possible. For example, a very minor careless mistake may ruin an otherwise perfect piece of writing. Proofread the articles you have written for a couple of times carefully. Make sure to abide by the deadline if you have any and try never ever to submit your articles beyond the deadline.

Create an office-like environment

In case of freelance copywriting you are typically working from your home. This sometimes may make you quite lethargic as the environment in your home must be relaxing and laid-back as opposed to the office atmosphere that is surcharged with competitiveness that keeps you always on your toes. Do everything you can to create an office-like atmosphere at home at least when you are working.

Have a do-not-disturb signboard hanging from the doorknob of the room you are working in. Explain to your kids that you are actually working from home, which is not different than working in an office, and ask for their cooperation. Have a fixed time of working and before you sit down to work, make sure that you will face no distractions in between by completing all household chores that need to be taken care of.

Tell your spouse/partner, friends and family not to disturb you while you are working unless there is an emergency. Take small 5 minutes breaks after every one hour. Discipline yourself to remember that you are working against a deadline just like office works.

Set up a target

Setting a target helps a lot with freelancer copywriter jobs. You can have a target of writing a specific amount of words in a single day. You should consider both your comfort level and the payment structure in order to set up a target. For example, a freelance copywriter job may offer you for every 100 words. Now, you have to see how much you can comfortably write in one day to earn a certain amount of money in a month. Don’t burn yourself out by taking us a lot of work that you cannot handle.

Network with other writers

When you are doing online writing, networking with other freelance copywriters really help. Join online forums, discussion groups, social networking platforms where you can interact with other writers such as you. If you have a work overload, you may give it away to another writer whom you know and vice versa. Remember, co-operation makes more sense in the world of freelance copywriter jobs.

Get A Free Ipad By Being An Ipad Tester

Apple recently launched Apple iPad, the new technology that triggered “iPad craze” among the people. Many are eager to get the new Apple iPad and they are seriously planning to buy one. While others can afford to buy a new Apple iPad, there are also those who want to get it for a very cheap price and even determined to get it for free.  Is it possible to get an iPad for free?  Yes it’s possible. You can get a free Apple iPad completely free by just trying it and giving comments about it. Of course commenting about iPad and getting it for free is worth your opinion, isn’t it?

To evaluate and analyze the performance of the iPad product, Apple is currently searching for people who can test the iPad and give their honest comments about their experience with this new gadget. After testing, these people can own the product completely free. In fact it is not only Apple who is doing this consumer testing.  Many major companies also evaluate their newly launched product through this method and this gives a good opportunity for people who are willing to share their opinions after trying the newly launched product.

To test the new product, you simply need to use it normally. You try every feature and then give your comments, suggestions and tell the company about your experiences with the product. It’s like receiving the iPad, test it and then tell Apple about your experiences with the new iPad. In that way, Apple can now evaluate whether the features of iPad meet their consumers’ expectations. If not, they already know how to improve the gadget. So, it’s really great to get involved in this process.

When you have decided to get involved in any iPad testing offer, you have to be very cautious because some sites asks for a small payment in exchange. And there are surely lot of these type of “test and keep iPad” sites. Always remember that legitimate companies doing the consumer testing strategy do not ask for any payment. They only need you to test the iPad, give your opinion and have the gadget without any cost. That is how you can have an iPad for free.

Most of these consumer testing offers are only available for a limited time so those who are eager to participate on this have to act quickly. Many are eager to get involved in these types of offers such that any delay will become a loss that can no longer be recovered.  Isn’t it great if you are one of those lucky people to have the new released iPad gadget that is acquired for nothing but through testing and sending feedbacks? Surely it is.

There are those who already have acquired Apple iPad for free through testing. As I’ve said these offers normally live for a short span of time. So why not try it for yourself too? Go to this link now and become a new iPad tester. Get one now without shelling out any penny from your wallet.

Cup of Joe: The Care Bears Hold the Secret to Being a Successful Entrepreneur

Care Bears?

Have you lost your marbles?

Well I’m not sure yet, but here’s the story.

This week I was taking a break from some coding to relax a little bit with my 21 month old niece. We decided to turn on Care Bears. This specific episode is called Lucky charm. Here we see the story of a young girl with low self confidence who is taught to believe in herself and to create her own luck.

I think this is an incredibly important message not only for children but also for entrepreneurs and businesspeople alike. It’s easy for us to write-off doing something worthwhile by making excuses for ourselves or our companies. By doing so we are able to hide behind our own insecurities and never move forward, taking risk and confronting the challenges they are required to do amazing things in life and business.

It’s interesting that as adults we tend to forget these important lessons that children are taught on a daily basis. This is generally because as adults we have responsibilities that force us to be rational and conservative with the decisions we make. But what’s important is that we don’t confuse our responsibilities with our insecurities.

Being an entrepreneur is all about risk management. Trying something new whether it be a different business model or product idea requires taking a risk and the best entrepreneurs are the ones that minimize risk by laying a foundation through a solid business model or funding strategy. But even before that, the best entrepreneurs are the ones that believe in themselves. They create their own luck and write their own rules.

So if you want to be a better entrepreneur then you have to take risk. But first you need to believe in yourself and create your own luck. Unfortunately, the Care Bears are not real. They are not going to fly down in a cloud car and teach you an important life lesson. You have to do that on your own. But, in doing so it’ll make all the risk and scary moments more worthwhile.
