When you think about another culture, don’t fall into the trap of dwelling on their tradition. A tradition does not define a culture. Many groups within the country exist and if you wish to target a specific audience you will need to immerse yourself within those groups to see what will best speak to them.

If you don’t create something for a culture simply localizing it will not sell it. You need to make a conscious choice to reach those global audiences. Your audiences globally will choose a local product if you are not reaching them with your branding and marketing campaign.

Communication and language will be essential when software localization or Website localization is being established. Make sure you are choosing professionals that not only know the language but also are fluent in the culture as well. Further, depending on the type of product that is being translated make sure they are well-versed in how to write/translate copy for that particular type of communication. For example, the same document translation professional that might be perfect for your software audience may not be the best fit for your Website audience or marketing campaign. Each type of communication developed requires a unique set of language subtleties that make it essential to hire someone well-versed.

We all want to connect with the product or service we are purchasing. We want to know that it will meet our needs or solve our problems. However, each country and each subgroup of people within that country have very specific ideas of what their needs are, how they perceive them and how they want them to be solved. A product that works for one group of people won’t work for another group of people if you don’t sell it to their individual needs. This is why understanding how to communicate on a cultural level is essential when undertaking the daunting task of localization.

Localization is a great way to reach a global audience. However, with the task of localization comes a big undertaking – cultural awareness and cultural marketing decisions. Make sure that the localization expert you hire is well versed in the culture you wish to target so that your work to reach a diverse audience won’t be lost.

3 Quick Techniques for Learning About Your Audience

As a copywriter, you are expected to find not just a voice for the copy and content you produce. You are also supposed to write the copy in a way that ‘resonates’ with your target audience, ideally in an authentic way. Often, you don’t always have an accurate picture of your audience, or even a lot of time to get to know them on any level.

When I started out as a copywriter, I learned a very quick series of techniques for getting to know my audience. Some of these techniques overlap with User Experience techniques, and tasks you may have done in marketing or journalism courses. I hope you find these techniques will save you time, and even some re-writes along the way.

1. Ask your client for more audience insight

Obvious one right? Maybe. But, if you’ve ever been under a tight deadline with not much time for research, you know how likely you are to just ‘get it done’ without first getting more insight into your audience.

Talking to your client about the target audience shows you are professional, that you care about your work and that you are doing what you’re supposed to do as a copywriter – write for your audience.

Most clients will know far more than you about their target audience, and because of this familiarity, they don’t always think to include pertinent information in their briefs to you. That’s okay – just ask.

The most useful bits of audience insight you can get from your client are things like what of magazines the audience reads, their level of education (giving you an idea of the type of language you can use), country of residence (should you use British English or US), what TV programmes they enjoy, where they shop, and what websites they frequent.

Getting these nuggets of background information is copywriter gold. By reviewing the magazines and TV programmes and websites, you’ll know what kinds of information they like to consume. Once you have the background you can move on to technique number 2.

2. Spend 15 minutes writing a detailed persona

What’s a persona? It’s essentially a story about the person you are writing for. This is the best way to figure out who it is specifically that you are targeting. By writing the story of this person’s life, you will come to an understanding of what drives them as a human being, what concerns they have, what habits, and you’ll discover what it is about the product or service you are writing about that will turn them on.

The key here isn’t to spend a long time getting this 100% accurate. You’re writing a story about a typical person in your target audience. What you want to do is quickly sketch out that picture of the person:

* What is his or her name?
* Where does he or she live?
* Is he married?
* What is his or her typical day like? What things to do they do from morning to night?
* Where does she work?
* What does he eat for lunch? Does he brown bag it?
* What websites is she visiting and when?
* Who are his friends? How often do they spend time together?
* What sports does she enjoy?

And so on. The important thing is to do this quickly, and include as much of the reasearch you previously did either on your own, or by speaking to your client. Share the finished persona with your client for a quick approval so that you know you’re on the right track. I trust you’ll nail this exercise because like all humans, you are already a student of human interaction.

3. Interview some real people

Time doesn’t always permit this one, but it is simply the best way to get to know the real audience. Maybe your client has a contact list from user-groups, or interview transcripts from past marketing research. It’s best if you can ask your own questions, but if someone has already covered this ground for you, you’ll be saving some time.

The kinds of questions to ask are the sorts of things you’d want to know from writing the persona (see #2 above). The great thing about talking to real people is that you get to hear how they speak, how a conversation with this person unfolds, and if you pay attention, you’ll be able to spot what gets them excited and motivated to share with you.

These techniques will help you craft better copy by writing to a specific target person, you’ll be able to find the motivations, influences, and conversion points that will make them leap.

What common experience does your target audience share? Quickly describe it and you’ve got them hooked, at least until the next paragraph.

3. Offer a clever twist on your “picture” to draw readers into the rest of your offer.

Here’s an example: Remember how it felt to go to Gino’s Steaks on a Friday night to get a cheese steak with extra Cheez Whiz and onions? There was no better way to spend a Friday night if you grew up on the streets of Philadelphia.

Now you don’t have to run to Gino’s anymore to have that same great Philadelphia cheese steak that’s famous the world over. Of course, the reader isn’t necessarily from Philly, but after reading that first paragraph he wishes he were – and he wishes he had one of those cheese steaks.

4. Use negative pictures, too.

Try describing something your audience desperately wants to avoid, their worst nightmare. You’ll have their complete attention because they can feel it in their bones that you’re going to tell them about an easier way to eliminate at least one headache in their lives.

Whichever picture you choose to paint, make sure it draws out an emotion from your audience. Once you have that emotion, use it to make your readers feel with every ounce of their beings that they need your product or service right then and there.

 Blogger: there are many blogging sites out there (WordPress, Blogdrive, LiveJournal), but Blogger is our personal fave.

Use your blog to create personal brands, which can then in turn add value and credibility to the corporate brand. Make the content useful and entertaining. Do not simply blog about company achievements – make the copy personable, and give readers a reason to return. Make your blog title catchy and your headlines creative. Keep is short and sweet. Include links and keywords.

 Add the “Add This” function to your blog. This will allow others to share your posts.

Has anybody ever fell asleep in one of your presentations? I hope that you’re saying a definitive ‘No!’ But how could it happen?

That’s an easy question to answer. And the answer is this – forget that the audience are there and deliver the presentation to please yourself.

Let’s think about this for one moment… Why has the speaker been booked and what is the speaker’s number one priority?

Simple – It is to deliver a speech or presentation to the needs of that target audience.

The biggest mistake a speaker can make is not to prepare thoroughly, and a key aspect of that preparation is to understand who will be in the audience.

So, let’s assume that you’ve done your homework. You have a good handle on who’ll be in the audience, so far so good, but what else can we do to turn them off?

There are so many opportunities to build a communications barrier between you and them and I’ll be discussing some of them in this article.

Imagine a short wave radio. You know the one that whistles and crackles a lot. You can hear a voice delivering a message, but those whistles and crackles are breaking up the words, and although there is a message, there is also interference. The message is incomplete and sometimes unintelligible.

It’s the same in public speaking. If we can remove the interference then our message becomes so much stronger. A major problem is that we are not aware of the frequency or the nature of the interference that we introduce.

Lack of eye contact is a popular omission from a presentation. Or the speaker often feigns eye contact by actually looking over the top of people’s heads. The secret is to make everybody feel that you are speaking to them individually. Make them feel special. Be generous with your eye contact. Nobody will bite you for looking at them, but they might growl a little if you don’t. Just three of four seconds to each person and keep it moving to cover all of the audience segments.

Have you ever noticed a speaker swaying from side to side? Shifting weight from right to left and back again, rather like a pendulum. It is distracting and it also can have a hypnotic impact on the audience. Ten minutes of that and you’ve usually lost the audience. Equally, rocking backwards and forwards, especially on an old wooden floor can result in an incessant creaking like the mast on a 17th century war ship.

Playing with keys and coins in the pockets is another regular mistake. How can you make natural gestures when your hands are tucked away from view? And that jangling of the coins and the key ring is so annoying and distracting. For gentlemen in particular, it is to say the least… unsightly.

Every day, we all hear lots of unwanted and extraneous verbal material like – OK, right, y’know, um, ahh, init, yeh, wicked, now, so… But that’s normally delivered in every day chatter. However, when these words are used within a speech or presentation, they are magnified and distorted out of all proportion. The recommendation is simply – leave them out, the interference will be reduced and the message will carry greater clarity.

If you are delivering a technical presentation to a non-technical audience, please avoid jargon and acronyms. It is best to distribute a list of acronyms and their meanings, otherwise, you will lose the audience and mentally they will drift off. I hope that most people would know acronyms like NATO, MEP, NSPCC, PDSA and KBG, SLA, TLA, but even people who are mostly up to date with their essential reading will not know them all.

In Britain we have an organisation called SAGA, which runs special events for the over-fifties. I used to ask people if they knew what SAGA means as an acronym. One rather energetic lady in her seventies gave me one hilarious answer, but I can only tell you what she told me if you attend one of our workshops.

If you wear glasses, be aware that they can be a major distraction. It’s simple, either keep them on, or take them off. At college I used to have a lovely professor, but he was at that age, rather as I am now, where his eyes were beginning to fail him. He couldn’t see his students without the glasses and he couldn’t follow his notes without them. The answer again is simple – invest in a pair of (sometimes) quite expensive bifocals. They are an investment, not an expense.

In a one hour session, myself and fellow students once counted his glasses on/glasses off movements 78 times. Yes, that’s pretty distracting.

Finally, avoid ambiguity, unless you are doing it for comic effect.

Groucho Marx gave us the famous, ‘New York man shoots elephant in his pyjamas.’

The key message is this – once you begin practicing your speech, just concentrate on removing those distractions from your presentations as they are barriers to communication. Ask a collegue to give you some objective feedback focussing on the distraction factor. Think of the short wave radio and keep that frequency of speech clarity clear.
