Solid machine with a few minor issues.

First off, let me say this clearly: This is a solid machine. It has good hardware, is nicely portable, easy on the eyes, has a decent battery life, and so far rock-solid performance. It does not, however, offer a great deal of frills nor is it without a couple minor annoyances. 

Since getting the machine it’s been with been with me across the city and across the country without being a burden. It’s not exactly slim, but it’s hardly bulky. I’ve run a variety of programs on it from photoshop and Gimp to Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect on high settings. In fact I’ve run those with other programs running in the background and have suffered from neither slowdown nor problematic system temperatures. I should note at this point that it actually comes with an ATI HD4670 and not a 4650, which is a slight upgrade It’s wireless N card has made online gaming (Guild Wars) while running a downloads in the background do-able. It has five(!) USB ports. I’ve used its integrated webcam and mic for video calls over VOIP and received no complaints from other parties. In one case, I actually received a compliment. Express Gate has yet to take a full eight seconds to boot up and has proven rather useful. The speakers sound fairly crisp, with the mids and highs being rather good for a laptop. They don’t have a great deal of bass, but then there is no sub-woofer. The LCD is nice and crisp, but not phenomenal. Also, as it’s an Asus, it comes with a great warranty. (1 year accidental 2 year manufacturing) In all, it’s performed nicely with few complaints; though, now I move on to the complaints. 

While it’s touchpad is nicely responsive, the scroll bars on it are not, especially the horizontal one. They take quite a bit of getting used to, and even now don’t always perform quite as well as I would like. The mouse keys are rather stiff and rather loud. There are a series of buttons with dedicated functions near the top of the keyboard. Unfortunately, they blend in very nicely with their surrounding area and their labels are very difficult to see. I have had to Sharpie in the button functions in the silver trim beneath them. Further, these buttons are not programmable. This means the bluetooth button will always be useless, as this model does not come with bluetooth. While the keyboard is comfortable enough, it occasionally feels like I have the control key pressed down sufficiently when I, in fact, do not. Further, the bottom left side of the keyboard in addition to being a touch noisier gives a bit and feels a touch fragile; though, other than the control button (which is not actually the leftmost but the next to leftmost key on the bottom) it’s given me no problems. The screen only supports up to 1280×800 resolution, which is a bit disappointing, but at 14.1 inches not terribly so. Also, it is fingerprint magnet. I initially thought this wouldn’t bother me much, but I find myself wiping the mouse keys and palm rests down fairly regularly because they get annoyingly smudgy otherwise. 

These are minor gripes, though. They’re nothing that has significantly affected the system’s performance or made me regret my purchase. At the end of the day, as I’ve said, this has proven to be a portable, reliable workhorse with a nice bit of gaming muscle. At the price I purchased it ([...]) it was a great deal. While I’ve yet to see it for the same price, I have seen it at prices not too distant from it and would recommend it unhesitatingly at a price point of 0 or lower. At higher prices, however, I would make sure to consider all available options, keeping in mind that for around ,000 you can get a system with an i7/i5 processor, bluetooth, and DDR3. Personally, I had no need for a system with that kind of power, and have been happy with how this one has fit my needs at a solid price.

Asus 14.1 N81 laptop Review

I bought this laptop about 2 months ago and i love it, it has a great design with a robust case, generally speaking great laptop. 

Pros: Its the perfect combination between a portable laptop and a gaming laptop, it a 14.1″ but still has a great processor and a great video card so you can run games in it or use it to work on. It runs very cool, hardly makes any noise, you can run games without any problems in it. Mouse, keyboard and screen have great response. 

Cons: The mouse buttons are a bit stiff but i guess that way they will last a bit longer, the Fn(function) key is where the control key and no bluetooth but that’s not a big deal for me. 

Overall great laptop specially for gamers on the move, will definitely recommend this laptop to anyone.

Good gaming Laptop with a few tricks

I’ve been play with this laptop for few days now, and here are some things that I would like to share with all future buyers. 
This laptop serves it’s purpose ok – playing latest games, I have been playing DAO with very high setting and it plays smoothly, NWN2 also works great with very high settings. 

But, there is no Bluetooth in this Laptop, period. Although seller indicates “with Bluetooth”, that is not correct. 
ASUS will charge you .00 to process your rebate, therefore, rebate is actually , not 0 and I doubt if I will actually receive rebate, there might be some hidden fees they don’t want you to know in advance. 

The LCD is not so brilliant, it’s not a LED backlight LCD, it’s just a normal Active TFT LCD, although the brightness is good, but the view angle is not very wide.

I like it and just what I need for airtravel but when it arrived from Amazon it was DOA, couldn’t get Windows to start up and set the thing up. After spending 30 min trying to get it started up I was about ready to contact Amazon for an RA to ship it back, but then went ahead and did a system recovery (F9) on it and reinstalled every thing. That did the trick and now it works like it should. That was faster than getting another one sent to me.

After about 2 months of use, here are my thoughts on using this netbook: 
1. The tiny right side shift key is hard for to hit and I’m always hitting 
the enter button by mistake. 
2.Battery life started at 11 1/2 hours and has degraded to 8 hours 
3.The touchpad bar’s left clicker has a cheap clinky feel and sound. 
4.The “what’s in the box” did not include the recovery dvd disk,….an 
important to have since those f-key recoverys don’t always work. 
Neither Amazon nor ASUS were willing or effective in getting me the 
dvd’s despite numerous calls and emails to complain. 
5. It does boot quickly and I like the size and weight. 
6. Spec for Spec, there are less expensive netbooks such as made by ACER

I’ve only had this a week; I followed the instructions about fully charging the battery. AND I am getting only a four hour charge, and that shows as 100%. This is a major disappointment.

This netbook has everything I need to surf the web, Skype, check and send e-mail. I’m very satisfied with the battery life and performance of this product. I have nothing negative to say about this netbook.

I bought this ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU17-BK 10.1Inch Black Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life). I followed all the directions on charging the battery. I even exercised the battery and the most I can get it to stay charged is 6-8 hours. I love this netbook, but I paid more for it because the battery was suppose to last up to 14 hours, but it doesn’t even come close. I should have gotten a little cheaper one, and it probably would’ve lasted just as long.

I like it and just what I need for airtravel but when it arrived from Amazon it was DOA, couldn’t get Windows to start up and set the thing up. After spending 30 min trying to get it started up I was about ready to contact Amazon for an RA to ship it back, but then went ahead and did a system recovery (F9) on it and reinstalled every thing. That did the trick and now it works like it should. That was faster than getting another one sent to me.

After about 2 months of use, here are my thoughts on using this netbook: 
1. The tiny right side shift key is hard for to hit and I’m always hitting 
the enter button by mistake. 
2.Battery life started at 11 1/2 hours and has degraded to 8 hours 
3.The touchpad bar’s left clicker has a cheap clinky feel and sound. 
4.The “what’s in the box” did not include the recovery dvd disk,….an 
important to have since those f-key recoverys don’t always work. 
Neither Amazon nor ASUS were willing or effective in getting me the 
dvd’s despite numerous calls and emails to complain. 
5. It does boot quickly and I like the size and weight. 
6. Spec for Spec, there are less expensive netbooks such as made by ACER

The Battery only last 6-8 hours

I bought this ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU17-BK 10.1Inch Black Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life). I followed all the directions on charging the battery. I even exercised the battery and the most I can get it to stay charged is 6-8 hours. I love this netbook, but I paid more for it because the battery was suppose to last up to 14 hours, but it doesn’t even come close. I should have gotten a little cheaper one, and it probably would’ve lasted just as long.

For netbook, it’s outstanding

OVERALL: It’s hard to beat this netbook right now, especially its battery life. 

PROS: 
- Battery life easily tops 10 hours even with heavy use. 
- Runs fine on just 1GB of RAM (starts to slow down after you have 4 major applications running). 

CONS: 
- It’s heavier than it looks (mainly because of the battery) 
- Win7 Starter doesn’t let you easily change the desktop wallpaper (search for “regedit windows starter desktop wallpaper” to learn how to get around the limitation) 
- I wish there were dedicated page-up/down buttons (you have hold the Fn key to page-up/down). 

CONCLUSION: 
- Windows 7 Starter is a fine OS for this netbook. People like to complain about it, but most casual users will find it easy, familiar, stable, and quick, even on on just 1GB of RAM. If you don’t like it, install Linux over it (or Chrome OS in 2011). 
- I highly recommend this netbook.

Great little computer

I am not any kind of expert with computers. I bought the netbook because I had spilled wine on my 19″ laptop with disastrous results and wanted something smaller for traveling. This little machine is great for my uses. Also, because it has 3 USB ports I can run my printer/scanner/copier and any other machines I need. It really weighs almost nothing and I hardly notice it when I carry it with me. The wireless function is excellent as is the webcam for Skype. The only disadvantage is that it doesn’t have a DVD player to install software from disc. For the price, it is a great value. I also purchased the 3 year guarantee with accident protection. I don’t keep liquids near to the computer anymore, but just in case….

Great value netbook. Asus developed the netbook . We started with their triple ‘e’ 7″ a few years ago. That served its purpose very well; a easy to use web machine to be used by my wife in the family room. Virtually no memory and the Linux operating system was a very good entre into netbooks. That little computer got a ton of use by everyone in the family. Alas, its time drew to an end as the limited memory and the inability to upgrade the operting system plus the small screen finally became too much to bear. Then along comes the Asus 1001. Addresses all the issues, and everyone is delighted. It has a nice shell. Overall fit and finish is generally good, though there are a few minor fit issues. Nothing major. It’s Windows. Enough said. Linux was a lot easier to run and maintain, but what are you going to do? For a few bucks under 0 it is a great value, and if you are looking for a light, inobtrusive, general use web machine, it really hits a home run.

The netbook comes at a cheap price, but it isn’t a cheap product! Sure you may have heard about so many netbooks with many flaws, but this one has minor flaws, which, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t bad at all. 
The keyboard feels just right, the webcame is crystal clear, the only thing I still havent been able to figure out is that whenever I record a video i have no audio, but I’m sure there’s something I’m missing and havent figured it out yet. 
The screen isnt glossy, it hardly reflects any light at all and is easy on the eyes. 

Overall, if you need this for internety type of things (I know thats not a word), then I highly recommend this product. It comes at a great price (I got it for 281), especially for how great of a computer it is.

Will not replace desktop, but will suffice…for now.

Long story short: my laptop crashed and needed to replace my hard drive; didn’t have the time to do that so I stopped by microcenter on the way back to school (I’m a college student) and bought this little bugger. I had already been doing some research on netbooks. 

I thought this would be able to replace my laptop. WRONG. As much as I wanted this to replace my laptop, it will not. It just can’t. Drop that dream right now. 

I don’t know if it’s just me, but the netbook is unbearably slow compared to my laptop. This is probably because 1) it’s still on windows 7 starter and 2) I haven’t upgraded to 2GB of memory yet. This is even when I am only running Microsoft Word and google chrome. Also, if I am trying to watch videos…don’t even get me started! Gchat is kind of laggy… 

Battery life is excellent. First day I got around 7 hours on a full charge (running word, chrome, anti-virus) 

It’s convenient because it’s small, light, etc. Not a fan of the “texture” – thought it would be more like the 1005peb, but I was wrong again. 

Nevertheless, I will live. However, I am looking to purchase a laptop/desktop. 

CONCLUSION: This will not replace your laptop/desktop. It is literally only good for browsing the web and maybe taking notes.

My wife wanted something for surfing/email/etc, so I told her that I would find a good deal on a netbook and get here one. I was worried about how the performance would be but I was pleasantly surprised with it. For what she uses it for, it is perfect. Would definitely recommend to anybody looking for something similar.

I WANT to give this a 5, but…

This Netbook is an amazing buy for the money. I bought it and immediately upgraded to the 2GB RAM chip and therefore cannot couch for any performance difference. 
So, I’ll give the bad before the good, the list is much shorter and the god far outweighs the bad. 
DO NOT TOUCH THE SUPER HYBRID BUTTON while any programs are running! Roughly half the time I’ve done this the screen flips out and displays bars of random static. Restarting via the power button solves the problem. This is the only reason I did not rate this product as a 5. 
Now for the good, and there is plenty. 
- Speed, with the 2 GB of RAM I’ve been able to run 2 Chrome tabs, Skype, Word, Windows Media Player, and Excel all at once. 
- Wireless, very fast and reliable. 
- Keyboard, solid and easy to use. 
- Webcam, good resolution and easy to use. 
- Weight, light as a feather, easy to carry and move. 
- Battery Life, I haven’t gotten the advertised 11 hours, it’s still on the first dozen charge-discharge cycles, but I was running it hard, music, Chrome, Skype, Facebook, all open and it lasted for over 6. Not too shabby. 
- Price, OUTSTANDING VALUE.
