INTRODUCTION
As usual when a new generation of graphics cards are is released, the first cards out on the market are the high end cards. In this case the HD 5870 and HD 5850. Later these have been followed by the 5770 and 5750 and we will soon see some lower end versions coming out too.

The release of the HD 5800 series brought a couple of new technology innovations with it. The “ATI Eyefinity” is a technology which enables one single card to support up to 6 monitors. “ATI Stream” enables GPU accelerated calculations, OpenCL gives us parallel GPU-CPU processing. However, the most important update is the support for DirectX 11 which in itself incorporates full support of Windows 7. This time around, Microsoft promises that the update of the DirectX API means a direct increase of the ratio between the graphical quality and the use of system resources.

AMD says their new GPU can achieve 2.7 TFLOPS, which really doesn’t say much about what the GPU performs like in real world (gaming) situations, but it does tell us that it is truly a very powerful data processor. The manufacturing technology is now down to 40nm, which should mean less power consumption and heat development.
Talking about the power consumption, AMD now promises that the max consumption will not exceed 190W in full load and in idle mode the card will not surpass 27W. If this is correct it would be a big improvement compared to their previous generation of cards.

Asus hasn’t added any physical alternations on this card; it is basically Asus’ version of the generic AMD 5850. However Asus has a series of software tools which help us overclockers to reach the maximum potential of this card; the “Gamer OSD” and “Smart Doctor”. This last application will be most useful since it allows us to play with the voltage of the core.

ASUS EAH5850, FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The card comes in a nice looking card board box with loads of aggressive printing on it. As is customary with graphics cards, ASUS pushes a lot on the overclocking tools. Also, the bundle (EAH5850/2DIS/1GD5) includes the game DIRT 2. When I opened the box, I almost got a little Apple feeling for a moment when I saw the black cover with the Asus logo in gold. Underneath the cover I found two boxes. The bigger box contained the graphics card itself, enfolded by a standard anti static plastic bag and protected by a white foam plastic material. The other box contained the accessories.

Except for the DIRT 2 game (digital download, no DVD), I wasn’t overly impressed by the accessories; CDs with drivers and applications; a printed manual; a power adapter (2 molex to 1 x 6 pin PCIe), a DVI-VGA adapter and a CrossFireX bridge.

ASUS EAH5850 IN DETAIL
My first impression was that it really looks powerful with its red and black finish. The card faithfully follows the AMD reference card in all aspects. This is a big card, the length is 240 mm and it takes up two slots. The fan is a 70mm and I hope it will not bee too noisy, but looking at the rather small air exhaust in the back of card, I don’t feel overly positive.

The front of the card holds two 6 pin PCIe connectors which would theoretically provide 150W to the card. Although I wanted to take the cooler off and have a closer look at the PCB I decided to let go of that intention since I would have to loosen a multitude of screws and it was impossible to remove only the housing without also clearing the cooler itself, which felt a little too risky. AMDs new cards</a> is their connectivity. They include two DVI-I, a HDMI and a DisplayPort. With the ATI Eyefinity technology, it is possible to use 3 monitors simultaneously with this card, not bad.

The main changes in my test setup are that I have included the benchmark software “Unigine Heaven” and removed Lightsmark 2008. The main reason for this is that it enables me to compare the difference in performance between DirectX 10 and DirectX 11.

BENCHMARKING RESULTS
I will not compare these results to the result I have received in previous graphics cards reviews since my test system has been updated. I was very interested in what the performance comparison between DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 would produce. As you can see from the graphs above the results were opposite of what I had expected, the performance was actually lower with DirectX 11 than with DirectX 10.

GAMING TESTS I
It is interesting to note that the performance remains high even when adding filters. This is something that AMD has corrected from their previous series which really suffered when filters were added. Otherwise, same here; the performance is very good but I will not make any direct comparisons to previous reviews.

GAMING TESTS II
The second batch of games includes more demanding games as usual. This test clearly shows that the EAH5850 has a lot of power under the hood and it was only in two games where the FPS rate didn’t hold steady above 30 FPS with the highest possible settings.

OVERCLOCKING, REFRIGERATION AND CONSUMPTION
On the packaging, Asus emphasized the “Voltage Tweaking” which is done with the Asus Smart Doctor software which also lets us modify the frequencies of both the core and memories.
It’s a dream to work with Asus’ tool for overclocking the card and it is impressive just how far this card can be clocked.
The cooling system of the card is very effective. The fan is noisy at full power but mostly it didn’t bother me too much.
I measured the total power consumption of my system in idle mode and in full load, here are the results:
Clearly the difference is enormous and it should be since AMD’s PowerPlay technology has drastically diminished the power consumption in 2D.

OVERCLOCKING RESULTS
OK, so here are the results from the overclocking tests:
The increase in the 3D Mark Vantage was truly impressive and this is also confirmed by the increase of 6 FPS in Far Cry 2 and the increase is there with filters enabled as well.

CONCLUSIONS
I must first praise AMD for the work they have done with this card. It is both energy efficient and a high performer, very impressive. Asus has taken AMDs reference design and added a lot of value to it with their smart technologies and software tools. The main advantage with this Asus card is of course its overclocking abilities which are nothing short of fantastic. ASUS EAH5850 is already on sale at a price that oscillates between the 0 and 0, which is very competitive given its performance, overclocking abilities and the fact that it includes DIRT 2.

Now the A7G isn’t exactly thin or light, making us wish ATI had included a higher end GPU for gaming; candidates could have included the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800GTX or ATI’s somewhat outdated Mobility Radeon X800XT. Around we love the style and also the screen, Asus could have included a little punchier speakers being a multimedia machine along with a more powerful GPU would certainly have been welcomed by gamers. A higher resolution screen option is noticeably absent, but we imagine that higher resolution panels would sacrifice the grade of this ‘low resolution’ WXGA display. Overall the A7G is a solid, nicely built, feature filled, and powerful machine; it is just too bad it isn’t available within the U.S., yet. I got this little guy to carry to work and travel with. I am not a techie and know little about the inner workings of computer stuff.I just wanted something I could tote all my digital stuff around on so I did my research and read other reviews by people who were techie smart and decided on this netbook, as having the fastest new atom processor, the webcam and mic I wanted, and the right hard drive size as well as a matte screen. I am very very happy with this product. I have downloaded kindle for pc onto it, so I can carry my ebooks with me…what a great idea Amazon…thanks. I have networked several movies onto it as well as my music, so now I have a dozen movies which play fine with good color and no hesitations, half a dozen books, and loads of songs where ever I want to take them, plus I can surf the web and type a letter, even work on my photoshop when I want. and it’s all in a tiny space. it sure seems sturdy enough, well made,not cheap feeling, the keyboard is easy to use and almost regular size, the keys aren’t too small or mushy feeling… I LOVE the matte finish on the outside and the matte screen is perfect. I get at least 9 hours of battery life, and that is reading while having a movie playing at the same time (split screen)you can have kindle open on one side and real player going on the other. Plus it recharges really quickly with the little cord that comes with it. Maybe 2 hours at most and it’s ready to go again. It is really intuitive and found my home network immediately with no headaches and finds the wifi in places that have it with the click of a button. Although the owners manual is seriously lame, you basically just insert the battery, charge it and go. Even I could figure it out and that is saying something about just how easy it is. 
what I would change…how it opens, it has just a tiny tiny spot to lift with, and you basically have to use 2 hands and pull from the sides like a clam. and it’s heavy in the back. not a deal breaker, but if you are holding it while reading (like in bed or in the car) it can be a bit awkward. the sound…it comes from the very front somehow and is low and kind of tinny. But, sounds just fine with earphones, which I use most of the time anyway. 
I would recommend this to any body looking for a portable multi-media toy.

Great little computer for travel

I have owned this netbook now for about a month-purchased for a trip to Italy so I could load photos, Skype back home and also have internet available to look up things about the places we were going to or had already been. It was perfect for that. Also handy for the long flight-my wife plays scrabble and we downloaded the game and this kept her busy for a while. The matte screen is fantastic, it is bright and glare free. Windows 7 starter loads quickly and has just about all the features you need. It also has a faster loading operating system (FastBoot) if you want to use it for just browsing the internet. It has bluetooth and I got a great little Microsoft Bluetooth mouse to use with it. Also battery life is more than adequate but not sure if it goes up to 11 hours. A lot of thought went into designing this netbook and I think overall it’s perfect, especially for the price.

Netbook Review

I had researched many netbooks before settling on this netbook with its large hd and long battery life. It was a excellent choice. Prior to this purchase I used to leave my desktop on all day and now only boot it up when I need specific files or applications not installed on this netbook. There is a mode that lets you bypass windows for really fast access to the net. I bought this netbook for when we travel so I keep most personnel data on my desktop but have found that I and my wife are using it daily. Definitely consider this one when choosing a netbook.

Asus with No fingerprints and Matte Screen

I have owned this netbook now for about two weeks and it is perfect for what I use it for, outside and in the car at work. The Matte screen is fantastic, it is bright and glare free. I have used other Asus models before with Glossy screens in the car and they can be a nightmare with all the reflections. For my use, it fits the bill perfectly. I find windows seven starter to be easy to work with, you can change the wallpaper and customize the screensaver very easily, just google it and follow the instructions. It will save you some money from upgrading to home premium. The screen is very bright and the fan is exceptionally quiet. I like the the looks of the “chicklet” keyboards on other Asus models but the functionality of this keyboard is easier to type on and has a full size right shift key. Like all Asus models, you can turn off the mouse pad by hitting FN+F3 in case your thumbs tend to hit the mouse pad and make the cursor jump when you touch type and it has a dedicated mute by hitting FN+F10. The sound is acceptable for a netbook and better than the toshibas I listened to. I keep the brightness all the way up, use a bluetooth mouse and keep the setting on super preformance and I get between five and six hours of use on battery. The textured lid and wrist rest surface inside won’t show fingerprints and the lid has a small ridge to use to open the netbook without touching the screen. Alot of thought went into designing this netbook.

Replace my 24 inch Ibook

Since I got this netbook I take it everywhere with me. It does everything that you need-email, internet browse and other things. I use it for book reading instead of my Kindle. It is light weight and I can read while in bed with it. I absolutely recommend this netbook for anyone. 
Perfect product-I have had it for several weeks now and have had no problems. Try it-you will love it.

This is my 2nd ASUS Eee netbook and let me say that I am really plEeeased!

I have several computers (as I think many people do now) and I wanted a little netbook for long plane flights and for just around town. I bought my first one in June of 2009 (a PC 1000HE) and really enjoyed it. Everyone that I showed it to wanted it. This happened so often that I eventually gave it to one of my sons who’s Apple notebook had just suffered a horrible death (it was drowned by a glass of beer). 

Several months went by and when my primary notebook computer suffered a similar fate (we are Irish after all) I decided that it was time for me to get another netbook. I was happy with my old ASUS Eee so I saw no reason to switch to another brand. This is a great little computer! As a matter of fact I am using it right now. Here are a few of my non-technical observations: 

* Many people are worried about the small keyboard but I wear XL gloves and have had no problem getting used to the 85% sized board 

* I bought the ASUS USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive (SDRW-08D1S-U) for this one and am very glad that I did. I had to download a different media player so that I could watch DVDs on it but once I did I was able to watch DVDs on a plane with little bulk 

* I have downloaded some of my favorite video editing software programs and they run just fine on the ASUS 

* If I don’t get upgraded to First Class on a flight I usually don’t get enough room to use a regular sized notebook computer. This one is the perfect size for when you have to fly coach. 

O-K, this is not a full-featured or full-powered laptop. However, it’s really small and it’s less than 400 bucks including the drive and a case! If you are looking for just one computer to do everything you might want to look elsewhere, but for what this was designed for it is great.

Simple awesome laptop….

I own 3 computers – a desktop and 2 laptops. My second laptop is this Asus. It is the first Asus I’ve owned. I thought about a netbook because I was looking for something portable for a lengthy trip I was planning (9 flights in six weeks for a total of almost 25,000 miles). I wanted something to take with me so I could keep up with email, etc while I was away. I nixed the netbook because for the money it didn’t have the features I wanted – no dvd player/burner, poor battery life, small keyboard and screen (meaning too small for me – it might be great for someone else). This is the laptop that gives you all the features of a netbook and still offers things you’d like to have in a laptop. It’s lightweight and small, but offers a great screen size for viewing. I’ve seen some people complain about the screen, but I have no complaints. I trudged around and thru many airports – and security checkpoints. Trekking along with me my trusty Asus. Always there for me when I needed it. I don’t know why people have complained about the build quality on these – I haven’t noticed anything that even hints at poor quality with this model. I figured after 7 times being put thru the machines at checkpoints in everywhere from Tokyo to Manchester, UK (and points in between) it might not survive, but it is still going strong. I cannot recommend this laptop model too highly and I am very happy with it.

Much better than a netbook

Although the price was somewhat higher than a net book, you get so much more with this computer! What ultimately swayed me into my buying decision was the amazing 11 hour battery life. I also really like the full-size keyboard, the onboard dvd/cd burner, the Windows 7 Home Premium (this alone was worth a lot, compared to the OS’s on the net books), PC3 memory, and weight around 2 1/2 pounds, approaching that of a net book. 
I’m not really familiar with ASUS’s computers, but I have built several desktop computers using their motherboards, and every single one has been rock solid and reliable. With a two-year warranty, I’m hopeful that I’ll have a long, trouble-free life with this computer.

This is the third ASUS we’ve added to our stable and am very happy with what we’ve received from the company. You get a very high quality laptop without paying the premium that others charge. 

a) Build Quality 10/10 — was very nervous about the build quality given some of the previous reviews. ASUS LISTENED. This is better than the Sony VAIO (bought less than a year ago) that we just recycled, the Dell I have from work and the HP that we bought a few months ago. Everything is tight. 
b) Keyboard 9/10 — I actually care about how the keyboard feels when typing as I learned how to type of a manual, then selectric many years ago. This keyboard is almost on par with what you can get from Lenovo. And, no, there is no flex that I can feel at this point. I save 10/10 for Lenovo 
c) Screen 10/10 — One of the most clear screens that I’ve seen. Have watched HD movies and also have manipulated images using Adobe Photoshop. Cannot be beat. 
d) Video Card 9/10 — Hybrid Nvidia/Intel MHD is awesome. Cutting to the intel chip with battery is seamless and you really cannot tell that you’re in powersaving mode. Only reason why not a 10/10 is because the Nvidia chip only has 512Meg on the GBU… Should be 1 Gig. 
e) Case — 10/10 — as stated in build quality… this looks awesome. Had to really work to figure out which panel was aluminum and which was plastic. 
f) Hard Drive — 5/10. I was a bit surprised that the HDD was only a 5400 rpm drive. I immediately created an image, replaced with a 7200 rpm drive and reloaded. I have found the 7200 doesn’t seem to hurt battery life and does improve performance a bit. Given the prices of HDD’s today, there should be no reason for not having a 7200 rpm. 
g) RAM — DDR3. Need I say more? 
h) CPU — Intel. Need I say more? 
i) Battery life 10/10. I have done quite a bit with numerous laptops to try to extend battery life. I don’t like having to drag around power cords when visiting clients. I am able to get almost 8 hours in battery saving mode. 
j) Bloatware — ASUS seems to be increasing the amount of bloatware they install on their laptops. I just unloaded everything that said ASUS and the laptop still works very well… Some of the ’smart keys’ don’t work, but that doesn’t bother me. The trade off between quick boots and flicking keys to change power modes is worth it to me. 

I wouldn’t look much further if you’re looking for a laptop that can be lugged around all day. The secret for a 14″ screen is the laptop isn’t much bigger than a 13.3″ case, but feels as if you’re looking at a much larger screen.

Great thin-and-light laptop, portable, efficient, powerful!

I needed to get a laptop to take with me before going on an out-of-state summer internship. I did not want a “desktop replacement” type laptop since I already have a very powerful gaming desktop here at home. 

After much searching and deliberation, I decided to get the Asus UL80VT. My reasons were: 

1) Asus reliability and reputation: I’ve always had good luck with Asus motherboards for the PCs Ive build for friends and several family members; plus Asus laptops are consistantly more reliable than other brands ([...]) 

2) Battery Life: claimed to be 11.5 hours. Real-world resutls are about 7-9 hours unplugged. This time is for light surfing and word processing, and allowing the Asus “Battery Saver” power profile to dim the screen, etc. You’ll get much less times using discrete graphics, bright screen, DVD drive, etc. 

3) Powerful, battery-sipping Intel Core2Duo U7300 1.3 GHz processor: this low-voltage processor is plenty powerful enough for everyday tasks, light gaming, watching HD online videos, etc. Asus is even kind enough to include a feature which automatically overclocks the processor when on AC power and your games demand extra “oomph”! 

4) Came with Windows 7 pre-installed: Windows 7 is simply the best operating system Microsoft has ever made, period. 

5) Size/weight perfect for me: I carry this laptop to class every day in a Case Logic ENS-14 14.1-Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (Black) in my backpack. At 4.8 lbs (plus 0.8 lbs for the AC adapter = 5.6 lbs total), this is about the same weight as one of my textbooks, and infinitely more useful! 

6)Chiclet keyboard: I love the spaced-out keys, great for typing, easy to adapt to from a full-size keyboard. (No full-size number pad, but that’s to be expected in laptops this size. Get a 15.6″ screen laptop if you need that) 

7) Fit/Finish good for the price: I love the aluminum top of this laptop, much less smudgy than the black one. The screen bezel is still black on the inside, which does show fingerprints, but that area doesn’t get touched very often. 

7) Has an optical drive: I looked into 13.3″ laptops, but they typically don’t have DVD drives, which is a nice feature to have for watching movies on a plane trip, installing software, etc. 

Drawbacks: 

1) Glossy screen is very shiny, I have a custom screen protector for this I bought online at [...] which cuts down on most of the glare too. 

2) Right wrist rest sqeaks/clicks a little when you put your wrist on it. This is not very loud and I don’t anticipate being a problem. I knew this was an issue with this model beforehand. Don’t be surprised if it happens to you, although yours could be louder/squeak more, etc. 

Other thoughts: 
* Some people have complained about the track pad buttons being under one solid piece of plastic. This doesn’t really bother me at all. It is not difficult to press the left or right side. The left 1/3 is the left click, the right 1/3 is the right click. Only the middle 1/3 of the plastic is unresponsive as it is solid underneath. I should note that I am using the Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging], so to be honest, I am not using the trackpad very often. 

*People have also complained about the stickers present on the inside of the laptop. These peel off easily and leave no residue, in my experience. Those are mostly put there so people who don’t know any better can know what’s inside their laptop. 

*Finally, people have complained about the bloatware/junk software present installed on this computer. True, these programs are very annoying. But one could understand why a manufacturer would agree to install these trial programs and come-ons: higher profits. If you’re so inclined, take 5 minutes to uninstall the stuff you don’t want, this is not a difficult process. 

* People ask what kind of computer this is all the time! Classmates/coworkers/friends who haven’t seen Asus laptops (too many Dells and HP’s out there!) will ask where you got this laptop  

* I have installed Microsoft Security Essentials as my anti-virus program, and have had 0 issues so far. I highly recommend it. (Free download) 

Summary: Overall I would say the build quality of this Asus is about an 8.5/10. I still rate this as 5 stars though because the minor build quality issues are not enough to detract from the overall value of this fast, efficient, and powerful laptop.
