Apple’s Ipad Pleases, But Is It Essential?

Apple announced it sold 300,000 iPads on the first day it was available, so the device is off to a good start. But as I’ve said before, I think we need to see how people are really using the iPad after they’ve had it for a couple of months before we’ll know whether this is really a game-changer or just a fun gadget.

My iPad arrived mid-morning on Saturday, and despite the beautiful weekend, I was able to spend some time with it. So far, I’ve found a few annoyances, but in general, my experiences have been quite positive.

As usual, with most Apple devices, the iPad just looks great. After I got it set up, I immediately found myself fighting my family for time on the device. The metal case and the tapered sides make it look thinner and lighter than it actually is. The brushed aluminum case felt a bit slippery, but in general the iPad handled well. At 1.5 pounds, it’s notably heavier than a newspaper, magazine, or Kindle, but I don’t think that’s going to be a real barrier to people using it.

Setup was straightforward. The iPad works with iTunes, just like an iPod or iPhone, and you select the applications, music, videos, and photos you want to transfer within iTunes. However, to get your iPad to work, you need to download and install iTunes 9.1, and for some reason, that version took about 40 minutes to process my iTunes library.

So far, I’ve mostly used the device to try out a few of the media applications. I’ve found a lot to like about applications from the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, Marvel Comics, ABC and others. In general, I have been pretty impressed by the creativity theses applications have shown, and expect we’ll see more in the future. (See my take here.) I’m still not convinced that many people will pay for these applications if the same content is available for free on Web sites, but there is something to be said for the fact that you now can take the information with you offline.

I found the iPad generally quite easy to read. In normal lighting at home and in the shade outdoors, it looked pretty good. Like most LCD screens, it doesn’t work in bright sunlight, and I found the reflections on the screen a bit annoying when trying to read newspaper applications on the train. So far I’m generally happy with the LCD display, though I haven’t really tried reading books for any length of time yet. (The book I wanted to read this week isn’t out in electronic form.)

I have tried both Exchange and Web mail on the device, and the new UI for the mail client is pretty interesting. When you hold the screen horizontally, you see a list of messages on the left and the actually message (with HTML formatting) on the right. When you hold it vertically, you see one message at a time, but you can tap on a button to see a scrolling list of all your messages, or a list of all of your folders.

My Yahoo mail account seemed to work pretty well offline, but the Exchange mail really needed a connection (as it does on the iPhone). I like the way that the iPad indexes mail messages and contacts along with files from the main search screen. In general, I’ve been pretty happy with the iPhone mail client. I find it does more than the mail client on the Motorola Droid, for example; though Mac and Windows mail clients have lots of capabilities.

The Safari Web browser works the same on the iPad as it does on the iPhone, with all the same pros and cons, except, of course, you can see a lot more of the page on the larger screen. And that does make a huge difference. A laptop will typically have at least as big a screen as an iPad, naturally, and will support Flash and Silverlight–and that’s a big deal, at least right now.

For instance, in email this weekend, I had several messages with links to YouTube videos or sites with music, and they just didn’t work on the iPad. (One of these was a link to the OK Go “This Too Shall Pass” Rube Goldberg-type video, which has over 10 million views, but clicking on it on the iPad just gets you a “could not load video” box. You can find a similar version using the YouTube application, but it’s not the same.)

The iPad doesn’t have nearly the battery life of an e-reader, owing in part to the LCD display. But it wasn’t bad. I got about 8 hours before I saw the “battery low” message, which is a bit less than what Apple claims and notable worse that many of the first reviews. My guess is that a weak Wi-Fi signal draws more power from the battery than a strong one.

Sitting on a couch using the iPad for Web surfing e-mail was a pleasant experience. The machine is relatively light and seems snappy. But did I miss features I have on my laptop? Absolutely.

The lack of a physical keyboard is obvious. The onscreen keyboard isn’t bad; it’s perfectly fine for responding to e-mail messages, but I wouldn’t have wanted to type this review on screen. Tim Gideon of PC Magazine wrote his review that way, but it’s not for me. If we all were using onscreen keyboards only, a physical keyboard would seem like a huge advance.

Multitasking is another obvious issue. You can play music from iTunes while running other applications, but not from Pandora or Rhapsody.

On the other hand, it is very easy to pick the iPad up and just use it without thinking about booting (assuming it’s charged), and I didn’t find myself really minding the absent keyboard, multitasking, or Flash all that often. I’m going to have to give this a try for a bit longer and see how often I end up reaching for the iPad and how often I’m going back to my laptop.

I’ve used other tablets before, and the iPad clearly offers a better consumer experience than what has gone before. But I think the jury is still out as to whether it will move from being a fun gadget for early adopters to a really useful addition to the technology that most people use.

Microsoft Corp, the software giant has introduced a touch-screen tablet computer which is manufactured by Hewlett-Packard Co. The company’s CEO, Steve Ballmer said that the new device will be available this year and added that US sales of PCs running Windows jumped 50% over the holidays.

According to the company, the new device will be easy to use like Smartphone, but as powerful as a PC running Windows 7.  HP, a pioneer name in the touch computing, will ship the full-fledged tablet computer. However, the question is – whether Microsoft and HP could generate as much consumer excitement as Apple’s tablet?

Meanwhile, Microsoft has added that the new device will not confront Apple’s initiative as the PC space is enormous and expanding rapidly, with a lot of innovation.

Earlier this week, it is reported that the iPhone maker, Apple Inc will announce its tablet PC by the end of this month and will start shipping in March. According to sources, it has been working on its tablet PC since July. At present, out of total PC sales, tablets hold less than 1 percent market share. Microsoft and HP have already announced various models in the segment. HP had launched various models based on Microsoft’s touch-enabled operating system; one out of them was a slate design that could be docked on a desktop computer.

However, due to their high prices, low connectivity and use of stylus in touch screen deter consumers from buying the device. Therefore, the two giants want to encash the opportunity, which is also eying by many new entrants like Motorola, HTC and Apple.

Various analysts are predicting that the company will introduce the dual-screen Courier tablet which was rumored late last year, but the present model has disappointed many. The upcoming WWDC is yet again generating a lot of excitement and the rumor mill has been buzzing about what we can expect to see at the conference.  Whatever it is that Apple has in store, we can be sure it will be unveiled in typical Apple fashion – surprise-filled with a hint at thrilling possibilities.

iPhone 3.0

Apple has already announced the in-app purchase feature of the iPhone 3.0 where mobile phone users will be able to buy new applications within applications.  Purchases go through the iTunes store and buying is as easy as a tap and keying in account details.  This feature certainly affords premium advantages to mobile phone users but more importantly, it provides third party software developers the opportunity to generate more income.  This will certainly motivate current developer partners to invest more of their time and effort developing applications for the iPhone.  This move will also attract more of the industry’s brightest so this elevates the iPhone’s status in the market to an even higher level.  

In-app purchase provides the same perks that developers get through the App Store.  They get to set a price on their applications and 70 percent of earnings go to the developer.

Mac Tablet in the Works?

There is also some speculation that Apple might in the future foray into the tablet PC industry.  Some industry watchers believe this isn’t such a distant possibility although there is general agreement that we probably won’t be seeing a product of this kind from Apple within the year, certainly not at the WWDC.  A netbook is definitely out of the picture as these devices are quite low-end and experts don’t believe that Apple would want to target that particular market segment.  A cheaper Apple netbook will also compete directly with the Mac and that may not be something that the company wants to deal with.

Consumers would certainly welcome an Apple tablet as it will surely provide an excellent user experience, perhaps quite similar to that of the iPhone’s.  And since Apple has pretty much gotten touch technology down pat, we can expect an Apple tablet to perform excellently.  Still, there are certain challenges that a Mac tablet will present.  As is the case with all touchscreen devices, it will be a chore trying to keep the screen free of smudges.   

Snow Leopard

There is still no official word as to the final release date for the Snow Leopard and while it isn’t likely that it will be released at the conference, there might be a preview in store.  Analysts concede however that Windows 7 may take the limelight from Apple on this front, at least initially.  There have been rave reviews of the Microsoft platform as there are massive improvements incorporated into the operating system.  The thing about the Mac OS is that it has been such an excellent platform from the beginning that analysts aren’t sure if there is anything more to add to Apple’s operating system.

It will be interesting to see what Apple will come up with to counter the huge appeal that Windows 7 has been generating thus far. GP

Innosight president, “vision: to use theory to predict industry change the future,” Scott Anthony, co-author of “Harvard Business Review” published an article, summed up Apple’s Dell Inspiron 8000 battery offer of three key innovative experiences.

That was in September 2005, a media company’s CEO said to me: “Trees are not always long to heaven.” The company’s core business strong, but the CEO told the team, in the changing environment, the need for innovation in order to remain successful.

A few days later, a colleague said to me: “In the past few years, you are a supporter of Apple. Do you think Apple’s stock how to buy and what?” I said: “The tree does not always long to heaven.”

Since the second half of 2005, Apple’s stock price has tripled in market value approaching 250 billion U.S. dollars, second only to Exxon Mobil and Microsoft, the world’s first company worth.

The amazing story has repeatedly been analyzed to tired, but still have enough warning significance. Would Apple’s iPad take time to hit Indian market?

After being launched worldwide on 3rd April 2010, iPad already noticed a huge number of customers brave out to buy Apple’s new device i.e. iPad. When the world of technology is abuzz with the new ‘iProduct’, can India be far behind? It is expected that Apple’s iPad would create a new user segment in the market of India soon. But when will it come to India?
Many tablets have already debuted in the market and we can easily say it is the time for tablet revolution. The concept of tablet PC, so far, is not very popular among Indian consumers, so iPad needs to go through this mass market hassles.
Experts say that this tablet category device would create a niche market for itself and Indian users are waiting for that product, which would emerge as a lifestyle product, and obviously not a mass product in India. 
Right after the launch of iPad, doubts and expectations have arisen from various corners. Would iPad outsell the iPhone? Will other tablets dethrone iPad? Even after all these doubts, market analysts say it seems like Indians are waiting for the iPad. But Apple has hardly responded to the questions on the availability of iPad in India. 
The iPad helps the users to browse the web, go for emailing, share photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games, read e-books and much more. But, the downside of iPad is, beside these intelligent features, it cannot multitask and doesn’t have an external keyboard, disk drive or a USB drive. So, according to market experts it can be a niche product rather than for the masses. It would create a new class who are always crazy for lifestyle products, and an Apple fan!
Some other experts doubt that the price sensitive nature of Indian consumer market may deter iPad from being a hit in Indian market. They are also concerned that iPad may remain limited only to the upper middle class segment in India. But at the same time it is true that iPad would face a challenge for several other branded laptops and tablet devices, which offer same features at the same range of price. So, Indian consumers may think twice before they invest in an iPad. Although, many people hope that the secret of this device’s success in India may lie in iPad applications and features that may take away the need of carrying hefty laptop.  
Of course, the naysayers may remark that iPad is not appropriate for Indian market, but the reality shows that there is a curiosity, an interest and intent. Crazy users may hope that Apple would plan for thousands of utility iPad applications to make it more popular. But how much of craze can be converted to sales – we would like to leave that to Apple. 
Meanwhile most of the iPhone and iPad Application development companies in India have already created various iPad applications. For the crazy users, e-Book iPad application would be interesting through which Users can easily access the newspapers, magazines through iPad.
