How to Increase Your Conversion Rates By Up to 500% Using the Free Google Website Optimizer

Google recently released a new tool called the “Google Website Optimizer”. Those familiar with testing conversion rates know that the best way to do this is to “split test”. Google Website Optimizer makes split testing multiple variations of a page surprisingly easy and efficient.

For those of you who don’t know what split testing is, let me explain..

Say you have a page setup for gathering leads, it consists of a header, a few short bullet points, your lead capture form and your footer. Let’s say this original page has a conversion rate of 6% – for every 100 visitors the page receives, 6 of them fill out the form and submit it.

When you split test, you create numerous variations of this original page, each variation being slightly different (usually only 1 change per variation). So, in one variation you might change the header, in another you might change the bullet points and so on. You then use a split testing script that rotates your traffic to one of these various pages you’ve setup. You continue this process until you find the best converting combination possible. For a normal lead capture, most people aim for 30-45% before retiring their efforts.

With Google Website Optimizer, you can test all combinations of your page at once.

Here’s how it works…

First, you supply the original page you’d like to create variations of; this can be a lead capture, a sales page, whatever page leads to a conversion of some sort. Next, you supply the successful conversion page. For a lead capture, your conversion page would be your thank you page, for a sales process, it may be the “thanks for your order” page and so on.

Now you’re able to break the page you want to test into as many different sections as you’d like by inserting simple javascript into the page. For a common lead capture page, you might break it into a header, bullet points, lead capture form, and footer, but it’s entirely up to you how many sections you want to use.

After you’ve broken down your page into sections, it’s now time to create variations of each of the different sections.

The first site I tried with Google Website Optimizer was an old lead capture page that I hadn’t got around to optimizing. I broke the page into 4 sections (header, bullet points, form, and footer).

I then created 1 variation for each section. For the header, I tried a shorter version of the header with slightly different wording. For the bullet points, I tried shortening them and getting rid of one of the bullet points. For the form, I created a version with a custom question field (the original is just name/email). And for the footer variation, I added a post script that said, “P.S – You will only see this page once, so don’t miss out on this one time offer!”.

The results are in!

After letting it run for roughly 3 days and a few hundred visitors, I successfully took the original conversion rate of 6% and increased it by over 500%! That means I’m now seeing a conversion rate of 30% – all it took was 15 minutes of my time to setup the Google Website Optimizer.

So what was the best combination?

The winning combination was the original header, the shorter bullets with one removed, the original form, and the footer that had the added post script.

I’m going to continue testing this page with a few different variations and see if I can’t get it closer to a 50% conversion rate.

So what does this mean to my bottom line?

Well, if this were a PPC campaign I would have just cut my cost per conversion by 500%. If that was a large budget campaign, that could mean saving thousands of dollars per month.

Overall, I have to say, the Google Website Optimizer is a great product, and the fact that it’s free for Adwords advertisers is even better. Now if only they could clean up their search results..but that’s a whole other topic.

Optimizing for Google, Yahoo! and MSN

Google Search – Links, Relevancy, Content

A lot of people have been saying getting ranked high on Google for particular search terms can be the hardest comparing to the other two engines. It isn’t true if you actually know the game rules. The fact is that, Google puts a greater weight on the linking structure of a web page and rates pages on a logarithmic scale based on the inbound links. It normally takes from days to a month for Google to index a site.

During the first month or two, you will see your site ranked up and down on the result page, until you have built up sufficient link popularity (sites linking to you). On-page optimization seems to be weighted lower here for Google but it doesn’t mean you don’t need to do it. Having great structures can boost your result. In addition, Google takes relevancy as a huge factor. Many people try to leave links around other sites with low relevancy to build up their link popularity. This is treated as spam by search engines, and Google knows it too well. Only exchange links with websites that related to your content. Comprehensive directory registration and a variety of forum signature links can help keeping you in the search index. Always try to structure your link campaign so that it looks balancing. It is always better to have 1 links from 10 different domains, than 10 links from two domains.

It is not easy to see a webpage with hardly any content ranked on top on Google. This is because Google takes unique content very seriously. Fresh content is another way to get ranked high on Google, which is why you can see many Wikipedia pages getting top ranking on various keywords in recent years. These wiki pages are written with resourceful content, enough relevant outbound links, images and properly optimized structures. Google has the strictest requirements, regarding keyword density. No more than 2% of a web page’s words should be the targeted keywords. Any more will be considered spamming.

Yahoo! – Links, Keyword Density, On-page Structure

Again, to do well in Yahoo!, great link popularity is a must. The best way to get your site indexed is by building a strong linking campaign, or you can use its Paid Inclusion program, which was charged per annum. There is a myth in seo field that Yahoo! tends to link sitewide links but that’s not officially confirmed. Unlike Google, Yahoo! puts more weight on keyword density and on-page structure of a web page. Serving over 100 million searches per day, Yahoo! believes that a hybrid of human review and mathematics works better than simply just maths.

When optimizing for Yahoo! search, always keep in mind that it places top priority on high keyword density for meta tags, alt tags, header tags, outbound anchor link text and content keywords. Try emphasizing your keywords by highlighting, making bold text, and widespread your keywords with around 3% keyword density, which is double Google’s. The title tag is one of the more important on page elements for the new Yahoo algorithm. Make sure your keywords are listed in your title tag as well as in your description and keywords tags. It’s funny but with Google, it hardly bothers them. Read about what Jill Whalen from HighRankings had said about meta tags. Suggested keyword density for Yahoo! is as follow:

  • Title – 15 to 20%
  • Body Text – 3%
  • Meta Tags 3%
  • MSN: Young Age, On-page Structure, Links

What makes MSN cute is that, it loves new website. With filled meta tags and keywords over your page plus a couple of low quality links, you can get your site ranked pretty high for the targeted keywords you set. MSN regards static pages being more important than dynamic pages, even though they do rank dynamic pages. It was reported that however MSN has lowered the weight of meta keyword tag and no longer index data from the it after a long history of being spammed. However, you should always include title and description tag. Another important thing for MSN optimization is that, keywords within url is extremely important. 85% of top ranked pages have keywords within their urls.

You can visit the site owner suggestion guidelines page setup by MSN officially for webmasters to follow for successful indexing on their search engine.

In conclusion, understanding how each engines work and what criterias they are looking for could make sure if you are doing the right thing. A list of combined factors for the three are as follows with the estimated weight:

The following are the top 10 ranked factors across the 5 categories:

  • Title Tag – 4.57
  • Anchor Text of Links – 4.46
  • Keyword Use in Document Text – 4.38
  • Accessibility of Document – 4.3
  • Links to Document from Site-Internal Pages – 4.15
  • Primary Subject Matter of Site – 4.00
  • External Links to Linking Pages – 3.92
  • Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community – 3.77
  • Global Link Popularity of Site – 3.69
  • Keyword Spamming – 3.69

Comparison of Google Vs. Yahoo SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Comparison of Google SEO vs. Yahoo SEO I’m certain webmasters have been debating Google vs. Yahoo SEO for some time now. It seems – at least to me anyways – that good positions on Yahoo usually net good positions on MSN as well. So one would think their ranking algorithms are somewhat similar.

I’m not sure that keeping good Google positions will benefit you on other engines. I’ve found – I can optimize for Yahoo & MSN – and they will not turn the tables on me at any given point. It may become so that in the future they are as dynamic as Google – but I have found Yahoo & MSN to contain more “static” results. By static, I mean that once you manage to get top positions on Yahoo & MSN (and especially for popular keywords) you usually are able to hold this rank for a while.

Other webmasters will agree, you either know the Google formula or you don’t. I have still not discovered the formula. I have had pages (and ones with good content too) rank well on Google for a short period of time, then disappear completely from those query results. Google is a strange creature indeed, and although I have been into Internet Marketing for over two years now (and it is my only income) I have a very hard time keeping up with Google and trying to optimize for it.

Quite frankly, I gave up after all that jibber-jabber about Update Florida and the “Sandbox Effect.” I figured such rapid changes, and such severe penalties for any given site – were uncharacteristic of Google. Google has a tendency to change their algorithms, and consequently their SERPS, almost overnight. If you’re able to hold a top position on Google for certain keywords, all the power to you. I wish I could myself – as I believe Google would supply more traffic to my site then Yahoo can.

But in the long run, optimizing for MSN & Yahoo is likely in your best interest. Unless you yourself can crack the Google code, or know someone who can/has, I would suggest sticking to optimizing for Inktomi. These old optimization methods posted for optimizing for Inktomi (a simple Google search will find them for you, I know, how ironic) actually still work very well for both Yahoo and MSN engines. I have been using them for a while now and am having no problems getting SERP listings for these keywords.

It does take a little bit of time what with link campaigns and all, but no empire was built overnight. For more information on link building, and other subjects, please read my other articles.

Website Optimizer is a tool that can help you improve the effectiveness of your website or web pages. By allowing you to Split Test different versions of your website content, you can determine what content best attracts users to lead them to convert on your site.

Example: You have a Name Squeeze Page where you are offering a Free Report in exchange for your visitors Name and Email Address. Using website optimizer you would test two slightly different versions of that Name Squeeze Page to see which one converts best.

If you put all your efforts into SEO and none of your efforts into Split Testing some of your SEO efforts will be wasted.

Again you will need to get your website designer to insert a code into your web pages in order to get website optimizer to work. The key to all successful marketing and online marketing is testing and measuring. It is essential to get the most from your marketing campaigns, and without the numbers how are you going to know what’s working and what’s not.

    Google Search Engine Optimization Principles

Google has come to be seen as the most complicated and innovative search engine as it really armed with an array of anti-spam technology. Google’s expanding use of anti-spam features has meant that optimizing websites for Google has become significantly harder and it’s now not merely a case of opening your internet sites source files in notepad, including a few key terms into your several HTML tags, uploading your files and looking forward to the results. In reality, this sort of optimization, commonly referred to as onpage optimization, will only ever is 20% efficient at attaining rankings for any keywords and phrases happen to be even slightly competitive. People who aced maths in school know this leaves us with 80% unaccounted for.

This 80% refers to offpage optimization. Offpage optimization is all to do with the amount of links pointing to your internet site and its pages, the exact linking text (anchor text) of these links plus the top quality of the pages which the links are on. Offpage optimization is now for sure the extremely dominating factor which determines where a web page will rank in Google. So Google search engine optimization is now mainly offpage optimization.

Why does Google give so considerably ‘weight’ to offpage optimization efforts and so tiny to onpage optimization? Well it can be all about the top quality of their results. Whilst onpage optimization is completely managed by the webmaster and can thus be abused by an unethical one, offpage optimization is something that isn’t managed by anyone as such but rather by other sites owners, internet sites and indeed the Internet in general. This means that it really is significantly harder to do any deceptive or spammy offpage optimization techniques inside in hope of gaining an unfair advantage for a site inside Google SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages).

The conclusion of the story from an SEO viewpoint is to spend less time on those tiny web site tweaks which you imagine might make a large difference (but won’t) and work hard on what really counts. What definitely counts is how the web ’sees’ your website, the far more excellent (keyword rich) incoming links your internet site has the better the webs ‘view’ are going to be and consequently the far better Google’s view of your web page will likely be. What Google considers of your site is incredibly significant, as they ‘look after’ internet websites they like.
