The Next IPad: Software Changes We’d Like to See

You’ve already heard about the hardware changes we’d like to see in a new version of the iPad, if Apple unveils a new tablet at its special event Wednesday, as is widely expected. But what would new Apple hardware be without software changes also thrown into the mix?

As good as iOS on the iPad is–and it’s pretty darned good–there’s still plenty of room for improvement, especially as Apple’s competitors in the tablet arena have finally started to get their acts together and produce devices that look more like contenders. Some of the most requested enhancements to the iPad–both in our office and among our readers–would involve changes to the operating system that runs on Apple’s tablet. Fortunately, as we saw last year with the release of the original iPad, Apple’s not above rolling out new iOS features to the iPad before delivering those features to all other iOS devices.

So here’s our list of iOS tweaks and enhancements–including a few holdovers we’ve wanted to see for a while–that we hope to hear more about on Wednesday. Apple, of course, has its own ideas about what changes to make, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream.

Improve the iPad’s productivity features

Despite the common refrain that the iPad is made for content consumption, lots of people use the iPad as a productivity tool. But some new iOS features could offer major productivity boosts.

Improve file exchange: Right now, moving files around on the iOS is a mess. You can send files from one app to another (for example, Mail can transfer a PDF to GoodReader, andDropbox can transfer an ePub to iBooks), and you can drag files directly into an app’s file space from within iTunes on your Mac. But these methods are hassles, and it’s easy to end up with multiple versions of everything.

That’s why we’d like to see Apple re-think the iOS filesystem. We’re not asking for the iPad to have a hard drive full of folders like what you’d find on your Mac. But it would be nice to have a common, shared area for apps to save files to and open files from. And there’s got to be a more intuitive way for users to move files onto and off of the iPad than that confusing area at the bottom of the Apps tab in iTunes. Being able to mount an iPad’s shared-documents area as a hard drive, so you could drag files on and off, would be a nice step. So would built-in access to cloud-based storage–and not just MobileMe, but also popular systems such as Dropbox.

We’d also like to see the iPad gain a feature that we’ve liked since we first saw it on an Android phone: the ability to quickly transfer files and other data from one app to another. iOS does some of this now (the aforementioned “open in GoodReader” feature, for example), but we’d like to see a lot more. Imagine being able to tap to send an e-mail message directly to Evernote, or a Safari URL to Twitterrific, without having to use clumsy cut-and-paste operations or complex JavaScript bookmarklets.

Be a better presenter: The iPad can be a handy presentation device, most notably when you’re giving a Keynote presentation on a big screen or using a projector. But it could be even better. We’d like to see the iPad support system-wide screen mirroring, so you can demo any app (or multiple apps) without resorting to jailbreaking. If that feature’s useful enough for Apple to use in its presentations, it’s useful enough to be available for everyone.

We’d also like to find a way for the iPad to branch out beyond the limited stock of fonts currently installed on the system–there are few things more frustrating than transferring a Keynote presentation to your iPad and having all your carefully chosen fonts replaced. We realize that moving fonts along with your presentation files might bring up some font-licensing issues, but it’s worth working those out.

Communicate better: Given its always-connected potential, the iPad could be a better communication device. If the new iPad comes with cameras, it will presumably add FaceTime. What about extending FaceTime to support document display, like the iChat Theater feature on the Mac? And speaking of iChat, is an iOS version of iChat too much to ask for? Third-party chat apps are great, but instant messaging is an important enough medium that the iPad should support it out of the box.

Other productivity boosts: The iPad’s screen is much bigger than the iPhone’s, so we’d like to see Safari on the iPad support tabbed browsing. And while Apple has made a lot of hay out of artists using iPhones and iPads to create beautiful paintings and drawings, we’d like to see better support for pressure sensitivity in the iPad hardware and for Apple to give app developersaccess to that pressure-sensitivity data, so that creating art on the iPad can be a much better experience.

With the majority of drug misuse “experts” (NB: my opinion of an expert is someone who has both studied the substances and consumed many of them – experience is the only ideal teacher), weed is thought to be an initiator substance, usually known as a “gateway” substance.

What is meant by this is that if John Doe decides to start smoking weed as they might be inquisitive, his social circle are pressing him or maybe because he saw the “fridge pants” episode of Frasier, he then goes into the experience of illicit substances through that same gateway… And the gateway leads to a plethora of bizarre and harmful places…

Places like smack, crystal meth, cocaine and speed.

This is a pretty severe amount of trouble.

And why would that be?

Because it’s not true.

It is in fact both a distorted form of logic and a side effect of the prohibition based legislation. Let me explain how this works, otherwise these words are as silly as the fear driven yelling that I am attempting to lay waste to.

OK, so, the idea is that men and women who consume Schedule I drugs have, by a large statistical degree, all taken marijuana at some point before in their lives.

Therefore, those who smoke cannabis pot bear a statistically higher possibility of becoming a consumer of far more harmful drugs. This is the core of the gateway drug argument.

And as I mentioned, there are a couple of issues concerning that view.

To start with, there is a distortion of common language and logic.

If I said to you that most opiate abusers had been marijuana smokers before that, the human brain processes the word “most” as a generalization. It basically converts it into the word “all” in the perception of our brain, should we take in the statement without thought.

There is nothing we can do about this. The only way we can take in the unyielding amount of data about our lives is to distort large parts of it.

So we are left with the words: All heroin abusers have been cannabis smokers previously.

Again, the brain will chop this up to mean the opposite is also true, thinking that they are equal: All weed smokers will become opiate users later on.

And that is not the truth.

The problem is if an “authority” yells often enough, loud enough, then they can thrust tricks such as this on our minds, purely because that is how our brains are wired.

Thankfully, it takes just a couple of seconds of clear thought to cripple these supposed authorities.

A larger issue would be the conditioning of society to allow those in authority to do their thinking for them, but that argument is for another time.

The 2nd problem I spoke of is the fact that this statistic is really only valid because of prohibition.

If marijuana smokers did not have to go to individuals who also sell smack, cocaine and ice, they would not buy them as much.

It’s like going to the store for BBQ lighter fluid, being told that it is illegal because it is made out of a potentially dangerous chemical and then walking up the street to a gangster who sells explosives, rifles and guns to buy exactly the same stuff.

This gateway argument only exists because pot is placed in the same logistical channels as crack, meth and heroin. The moment it is taken away from the sales channels, the consumption dynamics revise themselves and this issue disappears.

The people of the Netherlands made moves to free up the laws surrounding pot possession and sales in the last quarter of the 20th century. As a result, coke and opiate purchasing massively shrank.

So, is pot a gateway drug?

Not in the slightest.

And if anyone thinks that it is, it is as a result of using broken logic in a situation developed by the drug authorities of our world.

It has often said that weed can liberate a persons thinking. I think a person could just purchase it and never smoke it. It would still liberate your thinking.

Why?

Because then you would get first hand experience of some of the most stupid situations ever created by human beings.

I think that would free you of its own accord.

With Apple’s iPad 2 event less than 48 hours away, the rumor mill is spinning faster than ever. What’s the wisdom of the Web predicting? A thinner, lighter iPad with at least one camera and beefier hardware.

The consensus is that iPad 2 will be more of an evolution than a revolution from the original iPad, of which Apple has sold more than 15 million.

As usual, Apple has been disciplined about not releasing any information before their big press event. That has led the Web to spend much of its time digging, speculating and daydreaming about what may be coming. Some of the rumors make more sense than others, but as always, you should take them with a pinch of salt.

A thinner and lighter iPad 2 is almost a sure bet. Apple likes to shave the fat off its mobile devices with every iteration, and with complaints that the iPad can be too heavy when held up for a longer time, a more svelte iPad 2 is very likely. Also, brace yourself, as there might be a white version of the iPad 2 as well (though given that the company still hasn’t managed to ship a white iPhone, a white iPad may be too much to hope for).

The iPad 2 could also have a slightly thinner screen bezel, though the screen is likely to remain unchanged at 9.7-inches. A flat back design and larger, stereo speakers are also very likely developments for the iPad 2. Despite previous rumors, the consensus seems to be that there won’t be a Retina display on the iPad 2, but rather a screen that matches the original iPad’s 1024×768 resolution.

It’s very likely Apple will integrate a front-facing camera on the iPad 2 so users can do video chats. But opinions are split over whether we will see a camera on the back too. Other likely hardware changes include a faster A5 dual-core processor and 512MB or 1GB of RAM, as well as a dual-mode GSM CDMA chip inside the 3G iPad 2. The original iPad has a 1GHz A4 processor and 256MB of RAM.

Less likely hardware developments on the iPad 2 include the rumored SD card slot, a Thunderbolt port , or even a carbon-fiber body. It’s likely that the iPad 2 will cost what the original iPad costs now. The original iPad is likely to become a value sidekick to the iPad 2, sold at a lower price (though Apple is expected to stop manufacturing the original tablet once the new iPad appears).
