The best way to explain this is to run through an example. Let’s say you want to compete in the network marketing niche online. Let’s say that you have decided to use article marketing as one of your marketing methods.

HERE’S THE WORD…

A keyword comes to mind-MLM-a logical one to choose. First, let’s plug it into your browser window and run a search and see what happens.

PART 1: THE COMPETITION…

|

Look at the number right below the browser window. This is the number of results your search has produced.

In this case about 159,000,000. A pretty big number.

|

This represents your competition.

|

You won’t be able to compete for that one because you won’t get close to the first page on a search result.

|

GET SMALL…

|

So, what to do? Well, let’s add a word to MLM to make it a phrase and see what happens. I’ll stick in “opportunity.”

That got it down to about 414,000, but still too high.

|

Maybe that number’s ok if you’ve been at this a while.

|

Get under 300,000 by adding different words you think people use.

|

PART 2: TOOL ANYBODY?…

Then, Google has a tool called “keyword tool.” Let’s go there for Part 2.

(As a side note, Google has been phasing in new tools to aid us in our quest to get the best researched keyword phrase and the “keyword tool” is scheduled for the scrap heap soon. It’s actually going to be integrated into other tools. For now, though, let’s walk our exercise out using the “keyword tool.”)

HERE’S THE DRILL…

Let’s take the phrase you’ve developed (long tail keyword phrase is the actual name for it) and stick it into a window on their form labeled “word or phrase.”…

A list of phrases people are actually using to get to your phrase will appear after you click “search”. Find a phrase that’s used around 3-4000 times…

|•

Take that phrase and do a search to find out what your competition is. If it’s not too stiff, then you may have found a long tail keyword phrase to use in your writings…

|•

Use the keyword phrases to write articles and blog posts relevant to a niche like mlm recruiting, and…

|

Do it over and over and over, etc.

|

After a while the search engine robots will begin to notice you and, over time, you will begin to rank on the search results.

|

The better long tail keywords you pick the quicker this will happen.

It can be done. I did it in a week.
