Who Could Save PC Market?

Since the launch of iPad, PC market, especially netbook market has faced unprecedented attack. According to the Global PC report by International Market Research Firms IDC and Gartner, the sale in PC market only increased in single digit in the fourth season last year.

Among the top five PC manufactures, only Lenovo and Toshiba got their yearly sale overpass the average annual sale of PC market. The market share of top 3 PC giants in the world decreased in American and Acer, which was rated the second, had the highest decrease rate last year. Acer’s market share decreased from 12.8 percent to 10.6 percent in the U.S.

As we all know, American is the hometown of iPad. iPad, depending on its compactness, functionality, prices and sale method (bind with carrier), gave netbook the biggest attack. Acer’s failure and iPad’s success remind us that the triumph only belongs to those who could adjust themselves to adapt to the change of market and user requirements. PC manufacturers have to join in the battle of tablet PC if they want to survive.

Actually, before iPad, HP, Dell, and Acer released their tablet PC, for example, HP Slate and Dell Streak. But these tablets had little influence on the PC market. Why? Besides manufacturers’ misunderstanding about PC (including orientation, usage, target users, etc.), their doubts about this new gadget matter. The real fight is in this year.

Tablet PCs become the hottest products this year. Some people divide present available products into two series, smart cell phone series including Motorola, Samsung, HTC, etc. and PC series including HP, DELL, Acer and Lenovo. Currently, PC series lag behind Smart phone series. But PC has great potential to surpass, although they haven’t invented a tablet which truly stands out of smart cell phone series.

You might argue that 4G from PC series is very advanced, however, only few people know about the network. In accordance with the survey by Nielsen, one fifth consumers had no clue about 4G, four fifth stated that they only heard about it and only two fifth expressed that they intended to know. 3G will continue being the main trend at present and in the future.

Should PC manufacturers give up their main products and focus full attention on talents? Definitely no. Although PC had low increase this year, it still increased. The PC market gives higher demand on product creativity, market strategy and so on. The winner of PC battle was Lenovo last year. It increased 21.2% last year, about 7.8 times bigger than entire PC market.
