The newest of Motorola’s smartphone devices is the sensational Flipout; it is Android smart and runs the superb MotoBlur user interface. The name “Flipout” comes from the phones unique form factor; Motorola have mounted a sturdy QWERTY keyboard to the back of the device and it is connected by a strong pivot hinge which flips the keyboard out from behind the screen. A 2.8inch QVGA touch screen acts as the phones main navigation tool; it is very bright and vibrant and host capacitive technology enabling pinch and zoom control. Motorola have made the phone media accessible with some great online aspects, a great music and video player and a digital camera, you can even listen to your favourite radio shows via the FM receiver.
Generally, the Motorola Flipout is aesthetically pleasing, the design is intuitive and inventive and the performance is top draw, being powered by Androids 2.1 operating system benefits the phone no end, loads of Google features come as standard. Google Maps and Google Maps Street View are the perfect applications for navigational needs; they work well in conjunction with the phones in-built A-GPS to get you from A-B. Google Talk is the Flipout’s in-house IM provider and Gmail is compatible for e-mail setup. Another Google benefit is the YouTube integration; whether you are viewing your favourite clips or uploading some of your own it works smoothly and there is little evidence of performance hampering.
The MotoBlur interface integrates your friends from social networks with your phonebook and displays all the latest events, updates and tweets in one handy, easy to use application called Happenings. You can filter what information gets streamed by changing the settings to allow only specific social network information or specific people, this enhanced feature is great for limiting the amount of notifications you receive. The creative overlay also has a hand in the media field of the phone; while your Flipout is banging out the tunes it will recognise the song, add album artwork and even list the lyrics for you so you can sing along. The device has seven screens for you to spread your favourite widgets and features across and when you place a widget on the screen you can resize it so you can really make the most of the space Motorola have given you.
Both 3G and Wi Fi support the efficient Web browser, you get a Google search engine to get a full perspective of the web, due to the screens size web pages can appear to be a little low res, but generally the web experience is pretty good. The messaging section of the Flipout is quite impressive, as well as incorporating the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Bebo and MySpace it also integrates all of your e-mail and messaging inboxes into on universal inbox for a full overview of all of your communications. The camera is only a 3.1 mega pixel effort but it handles your basic photography needs with composure and videos can be recorded too. The music player and video player can handle an abundance of different file types quite comfortably and the interface controls have been well positioned to control both.
The Motorola Flipout is an advanced smartphone and will benefit users from all walks of life, the messaging support is sublime and the online capabilities of the phone are as expected on the small screen. The Android Market will supply users with plenty of additional content to keep them busy and the music player is fun to play with as it practically doubles as a karaoke machine. Motorola have produced a strong contender for the ongoing smartphone battle.
