Important Web Design Tips to Remember in 2010

Important Web Design Tips to Remember in 2010

Once Microsoft’s Windows became available to the public in 1985, the World Wide Web had just opened its doors to what is now a virtual storefront to the entire world. I remember the beginning of web site design, and the frenzy there was among all the big companies to get a site up and running. People were quickly buying up names like McDonald’s; Nike; and Coke in the hopes of selling them back to the companies for huge profits. It was several years before McDonalds.com was actually being run the famous hamburger place.

These days setting up a web site is as easy as writing an essay, there are so many templates out there and free storefronts available in exchange for advertising banners, anyone can learn to design and open a web page of their own for literally any reason.

If you are a business owner, it is imperative that you have a simple and effective web site design to convince people to do business with you. Since so many people make most of their decisions based on what they see on a web site, if you are going to design one, make sure you follow some simple rules to ensure steady, consistent traffic and a good response.

Make sure yours is easy to navigate. If your homepage is loaded down with pop up’s, advertising, or too many links, these will immediately drive away most people who happen to stumble upon it. Break your information down into blocks of information, and then have the reader go to another tabbed page in order to find out more. This will draw them into your site, and hopefully get them to do business with you.

Don’t put too much on one page. If you have a lot to say about one thing in particular, have your site open up another page within the site. This way when the reader is done reading that one particular bit of information, all he has to do is close that page and he is still back on your site. If he has to use the back button, he may wind up on another site or even back at Google, making it too easy for him to move on to something else.

Avoid background music. Remember the phrase ‘a picture tells a thousand words’? Well, ‘one song can invoke a thousand images’. You have no idea what kind of mood the surfer is in, so try to avoid music if at all possible. If the surfer wants to listen to music, they will most likely be listening to their own Media Center with their own, custom clips. If you have to use music, make sure the MUTE button is clearly visible.

If you can avoid these 3, simple web design mistakes, you will be miles in front of most of the web pages that you will out there, on any given day. Just remember to keep it simple, and make sure your tabs are clearly marked and labeled so the reader can find exactly what he is looking for.
