Google Phones Using Android And Their Effect China Non Brand Cell Phones
Open source code means that Chinese manufactures will now have a way to create a smart phone OS that is truly suitable to be enjoyed worldwide and is legitimate at the same time (regarding the phone’s internal software by the way, not its outer casing or its GUI). The initial phone to embrace Google Android was the classic Sciphone Dream G2. Sciphone was already quite famous (infamous) for coming out with iPhone clones such as the i9 and the i93G. The G2 was their attempt at releasing a semi-legitmate phone. However, the developers didn’t have the means to run the full Android platform, so they put together a simulated version…hey, got to start somewhere.
The G2 phone uses a custom made lightweight version of Android. This result is because the phone misses sufficient CPU speed (you need at least 64MB of NAND free to make Android run with any functionality and the G2 only has 32MB on board).
This is just the beginning however. As new upgrades of the MTK line of chips become available (the most common chipset in Asia, and with today’s big deal being the MTK6235), CPU power and on board NAND will improve letting phone manufactures truly use the open source Google Android OS. And what’s the best part? All the ridiculous and great applications made for a Google Android phone will be accessible at a little piece of the cost of a famous smart phone, will be surely unlocked, and there won’t be worrisome shipping (customs) holdups as we risk now with the Windows Mobile phones. The outlook for smart phones in China appears bright indeed.
