The Definition Of Targeted Advertising

The Definition Of Targeted Advertising

One of the major ways of advertising online today is targeted advertising. You must have seen advertisements on websites related to the content that is present on that website. Before we jump towards the definition of targeted advertising, let’s provide some food for thought with this example:

Imagine you are watching TV one day. You switch to a channel which is airing a children’s show. Some sort of teenage drama, cartoons, animated movies, etc. Then the commercials come on, and a Camel sugary cereal which is shaped like little animals from the zoo is advertised. You watch the commercial and go back to the show. Now, you switch the channel to watch a program about investment banking and stock market trends, and a commercial comes on for a new bank that’s giving out loans with lowest Annual Percentage Rates.

Hmm … See the pattern?

The children’s show was advertised with a sugary cereal commercial, because the audience of that show was more prone to buying the product being advertised. The audience of the stock market show wouldn’t really be interested in animal shaped sugary food, and the audience of a cartoon wouldn’t be interested in investment banking.

The definition of targeted advertising may be given as ‘the presentation of advertisement to the target audience, who are more amiable towards buying the product being sold.

Content targeted ads and targeted advertising have successfully become one of the most effective ways of making money online, online users to put advertisements on their websites or blog. The readers and the visitors then click on ads, which are related to the content and the publisher gets some share of the money from the clicks and every few thousand impressions. If you have a website with heavy traffic, this can even be your major source of income.
