The Nokia N97 introduces the concept of ’social location’. With integrated A-GPS sensors and an electronic compass, the Nokia N97 mobile computer intuitively understands where it is. The Nokia N97 makes it easy to update social networks automatically with real-time information, giving approved friends the ability to update their ’status’ and share their ’social location’ as well as related pictures or videos.
The home screen of the Nokia N97 mobile computer features the people, content and media that matter the most. Friends, social networks and news are available by simply touching the home screen.

The Nokia N97 is a S60 5th Edition mobile computer with a large 3,5â€œ, bright NedÂ TFT color display with resistive touch screen and tactile feedback. The device provides excellent user experience for internet and entertainment by combining QWERTY keyboard with touch UI and Home screen functionality. Use the N97 to connect to mobile broadband using WLAN or HSDPA. Find directions and locations with the integrated A-GPS and included maps. Additional features include game titles with N-Gage, a 5 mega pixel camera with dual LED flash and automatic retagging of images and videos.The Nokia N97 was released in US flagship stores on 9 June 2009 and on 26th June 2009 was released worldwide. In September 2009 it was reported that two million N97 handsets had been sold in three months following its release. The N97 ships with trial versions of Quick Office, Adobe reader, Bingo and Jock Spot Premium as well as Nokia’s own Ova Maps and Ova store. The initial software had mixed reception, prompting the release of new firmware in October 2009. Nokia E72 released the new firmware with kinetic scrolling for the N97 to address the major issues present in the firmware the device launched with. However, the new firmware still causes problems with some functions of the device.

On occasion, the camera lens cover of the N97 can cause scratches on the lens. Nokia has acknowledged that on many devices the cover is mounted too closely to the lens so that dust and debris can cause scratches. On later models however, this issue seems to have been resolved. The device has also been criticized for lacking an on-screen keyboard, thus rendering the user unable to type without flipping the keyboard open. The N97 Mini is a downsized version of the N97 and has been available since October 2009. The Mini Nokia N97 downsized some features of the original N97, such as 8 GB of storage memory, 3.2 inch touch-screen, removal of FM transmitter and a shorter battery life. A limited edition called the N97 mini Arul Limited Edition has been released in relation with fashion house FJ Benjamin and the Arul brand. It also features the new Fashion Asia widget and went on sale in late October 2009 in Malaysia and Singapore.
