Kindle Reading Device 2 Great Reading Gadget. Review Compared with BN Nook.

I had the Kindle Reading Device 2 in my shopping cart for months before I finally bought it. The person on the bus home one day had the Kindle Reading Device and was reading. A chance to look at the Kindle Reading Device in person locked it in for me. It’s too bad Amazon doesn’t have a way other than arranging a meeting with a Kindle owner to demo it in person. I think it really helps in sealing the deal.

The other thing that locked in the deal for me was making the Global version of the Kindle Reading Device the only version at 9. The price is still high for a gadget that does really only one thing in grayscale but hopefully the price will come down one day and there will be color e-ink.

The Kindle Reading Device was very easy to get started with. Unboxing was easy and Apple product-like. The device was pre-registered to my account and it had an friendly welcome letter from Bezos.

There was a recent firmware update that increased battery life and removed some restrictions on pdf documents. It was not pre-installed as I thought it would be. I had to follow Amazon’s online instructions to update the Kindle Reading Device manually since I didn’t want to wait until it updated on its own.

The Kindle Reading Device e-ink technology is great for reading. I can read for a long time with no eyestrain. I was using the Kindle Reading Device iPhone app occasionally before I got the Kindle Reading Device and the difference in reading is very noticeable. The page transition does take a little getting used to as it is flashing when re-draiwng each page but you soon ignore it. The text really looks etched in and is very readable even in bright light. I love the inline dictionary. The grayscale works very well with pictures and diagrams.

Battery life is great. It’s awesome to have a gadget that doesn’t need to be charged everyday. The advertised battery charge life is accurate and if you’re on a long train or plane ride you will be able to read without charging.

Navigation is a little confusing at first. The 5-way controller is useful once you get used to it. Navigating in the Kindle Reading Device store is still a little cumbersome though. The keyboard looks and feels weird but works fine.

The Kindle Reading Device e-book store has a pretty good selection. I’m disappointed that some new books are above .99 and that some authors are delaying the Kindle Reading Device version release to allow time for hardcover sales. I find it hard to believe that e-book sales are cannibalizing hardcover sales. Once you make the investment in an e-reader I don’t know why you would shoot yourself in the foot by buying the hardcover. I can’t think of any book that I wouldn’t wait for in e-book format. Browsing the Kindle Reading Device book store on the Kindle Reading Device for random good reads is problematic. You get some recommendations but random discovery of SF or mystery books really doesn’t work. Also,in general older books from authors are harder to find.

I’ve heard some people say they don’t want to give up the smell and feel of books. IMHO,a good leather cover takes care of that. DRM is a problem though. You’re buying books in a proprietary format that can’t last for decades like current books and also cannot be shared with friends. Hopefully,with time,new technology and finally real competition there will be some changes.

Durability was one of the major concerns I had in buying a Kindle Reading Device. I had read some of the reviews of how easily a Kindle Reading Device can be damaged. I’ve noticed that the drop test video Amazon used to have up is gone. The Kindle Reading Device does feel a little delicate in your hands. I have dropped it once now from about 2 feet onto a carpet and it survived unscathed. I don’t think it would fare well on a hard surface though.

I’ve used the Kindle Reading Device internationally in Japan and Singapore. I wasn’t aware there are separate Whispersync charges for international synching. It’s .99 per book and another charge per MB for downloading personal docs. Amazon really doesn’t mention this clearly enough on the product page. It only mentions “additional charges may apply”. However, when you turn on wireless for the first time internationally it downloads a document detailing the charges for you and the Kindle Reading Device store clearly mentions the .99 charge near the buy button. It was nice to buy the current issue of the NY Times on the plane before take-off in Tokyo. Oddly Amazon does not charge additionally internationally for the use of the Experimental web browser. I was able to login to Twitter easily and send a tweet.

Summary:

Pros:

* Awesome battery life.
* No need to lug books taking valuable luggage space when traveling.
* Cheaper books for the most part.
* 3G Wireless included in product price.
* Great readability with e-ink
* Built-in dictionary
* Global wireless

Cons:

* Still a little expensive.
* DRM
* e-books over .99
* Delayed e-book releases by publisher
* Tough to discover/browse for new books on the Kindle Reading Device

I have a friend who owns a B&N Nook and so I can provide a little comparison.

Nook Wins:

* Does look more advanced and cleaner.
* Color touchscreen and book cover.
* Actual page count progress instead of Kindle’s confusing progress bar.
* In-store demo booth.
* Loaning out books from Public Library. My friend was able to get new releases for free with this. Kindle Reading Device needs to get on this.
* Purchased e-book Loaning
* Font choices

Kindle Wins:

* Battery Life
* Global Wireless
* Faster page loading and transition. The Nook did seem slower than the Kindle Reading Device at times.
* You can get the Kindle Reading Device immediately.

Nook & Kindle Tie:

* e-ink display
* eBook selection

Overall for me the Kindle Reading Device still wins since I need the longer battery life and Global wireless since I travel alot internationally. I’m glad the Nook is here to provide some competition pressure. This competition is already causing price drops and more features from Amazon.
