The Demographics of Manchester

In 2001 the results of the United Kingdom Census revealed Manchester’s population had declined by 9.2% since the census of 1991.

The total population of Manchester was recorded at 392,819 with the inclusion of Greater Manchester the total rose to 2,547,700.

Mid-year calculation recorded in 2006, found that there was 452,000 residents in Manchester at that time. This made Manchester one of the most populated areas in the North West of England.

High unemployment was recorded in Manchester with the second lowest proportion of people being in employment in the United Kingdom.

83,000 of the residents were under the age of 16 years old, 285,000 were between the ages of 16-74. The remaining 25,000 residents of Manchester are over the age of 75.

The City of Manchester has great ethnic diversity and was placed 34th in England.

Over 77% of the residents in Manchester are white, with 71% being British, 3% Irish and 3% other.

The South Asian community counts for 10.3% of the population, 2.3% are Indian, 5.8% Pakistani, 1% Bangladeshi, 1.2% other South Asian.

5.2% of Manchester’s population is Black with 2% being Black Caribbean. A further 2.7% are Black African and 0.5% Other Black.

The population of mixed race people in Manchester is 3.2% with 1.3% Mixed White and Black Caribbean, 0.6% Mixed White and Black African, 0.7 Mixed White and Asian and 0.7 Other Mixed.

The areas with a high percentage of ethnic minorities were pinpointed as Moss Side, Longsight, Cheetham Hill and Rusholme.

In the case of religions Manchester has the largest Jewish community outside of London and one of the largest population of Muslims.

A large numbers of Chinese students come to Manchester as it has its own China Town which houses restaurants and Chinese supermarkets.
