With location-based sites like Yelp, Foursquare, Twitter, and others on the rise, Google decided to enter the “location war” with Google Places, a tool that enables business owners to build a directory page in Google Maps. However, Google has taken it up a notch. People can now browse local business in Google Street View and find nearby listings right on the map.

Newspaper Circulation Contines to Nosedive

The headline alone is nothing that will surprise people, especially those in the online marketing industry. In fact, watching the decline and fall of the newspaper industry is some kind of guilty pleasure that everyone seems to relish. Since there are jobs and things at stake maybe that’s not such a good position to take but it is what it is, as they say.

The continued circulation declines however, are real news in the sense that it truly signifies the shift in how people get their information these days. Because of our ‘go-go’ lifestyle most people can’t be bothered with the print version of a newspaper. Commutes in cars make it harder to read a paper (notice I didn’t say impossible since there are still morons that think driving and reading the paper is simply multi-tasking). There is less time in the morning to ‘relax’ while reading the paper. Life is just different. Maybe not better but certainly different.

The Audit Bureau of Circulation’s latest figures confirms this change as 10 of the top 25 newspapers experienced a decline of more than 10% in the six months ending March 31, 2010. The Wall Street Journal reports

Newspaper circulation has been ebbing slowly for decades, but the pace has picked up of late, as more readers turn to a range of digital media such as the Web, smartphones and the iPad. Some publishers also have drastically curtailed the distribution of their papers, while others have abandoned print partially or altogether for the Internet.

Among the country’s largest papers, the sharpest drops were at the San Francisco Chronicle, owned by Hearst Corp., where circulation fell nearly 23%, and the Dallas Morning News, owned by A.H. Belo Corp. Its circulation declined 21%.

The one bright spot is actually the Wall Street Journal itself as it retains the top circulation spot it took last year from USA Today. Just that fact alone is enough to make one think. The Wall Street Journal is read by the business community and in particular business leadership. That leadership tends to be older because of experience levels. As a result, when will that group finally “age out” and the Journal’s numbers will also slide as a result of demographics more than anything else?

The plight of USA Today is actually tied to business as well. It is tied to the economy though not because the readers are the business barons like the WSJ but rather the road warrior that gets their USA Today in the hotels and motels of the workweek business traveler. Business travel is down so the USA Today circulation is down as well. Down a whopping 14%.

So the discussion turns to paywalls and what is next for the newspaper industries. These declines have been piling up for the last three six month periods. Obviously, this is not a sustainable path.

Will Rupert Murdoch’s cry for paid content be heard? Does anyone take into account that the success of the Wall Street Journal is that business people require the information it gives AND have the resources to keep paying for the information? WSJ readers are nothing like the common reader. Also, if you live in a high-tech region like San Francisco wouldn’t it make sense that the decline in circulation will be accelerated?

Honestly, these results don’t uncover anything we haven’t known for a while now. What is becoming evident though is that time is truly running out for newspapers to “you know what” or get off the pot. If they continue on this path the end is already known. Does anyone really want to see that ending? I know I don’t.

iPhone Blogger Intrigue Results In Search Warrant

In case you haven’t heard there are a few stories flying around about just how shielded bloggers are with regard to sources and protection afforded other journalists under the law. Yesterday we talked about one instance in New Jersey. Today we move cross country to the home of all things tech and watch as Gawker Media’s Gizmodo editor, Jason Chen, becomes the center of a legal and ethical conundrum of sorts.

The New York Times reports

Gawker Media said Monday that computers belonging to one of its editors, Jason Chen, were seized from his home on Friday in an apparent investigation into the sale of a next-generation Apple iPhone. Gawker suggested the action violated California’s shield law for journalists.

The technology blog Gizmodo, which Gawker owns, published articles last week about the phone after buying the device for $5,000 from a person who, according to the site, found it at a bar in California last month.

Found it in a bar. Good one. Did the dog eat your homework too? Sorry, that was my own editorial. Bottom line for the Internet marketing world is just how protected are bloggers, be they independent or corporate, and do the freedoms afforded bloggers as ‘reporters’ allow them to cross lines without repercussions? I find it somewhat amusing how many bloggers won’t call themselves ‘journalists’ but will certainly jump the fence if there is a need for legal protection.

The story of the 4G iPhone may turn into one of Silicon Valley legend and lure but right now it just seems pretty silly. Unfortunately for Chen he is now likely to be a pawn in a chess match that may decide how blogging is done in the future.

Gawker is protecting their guy with the following argument

Gawker’s chief operating officer, Gaby Darbyshire, said in a letter to the authorities on Saturday that shield laws protected Mr. Chen and his computers. She said Gawker expected the immediate return of his property.

“Under both state and federal law, a search warrant may not be validly issued to confiscate the property of a journalist,” Ms. Darbyshire wrote. “Jason is a journalist who works full time for our company,” she continued, adding that he worked from home, his “de facto newsroom.”

“It is abundantly clear under the law that a search warrant to remove these items was invalid. The appropriate method of obtaining such materials would be the issuance of a subpoena,” she wrote.

Another Gawker heavyweight weighed in

“Are bloggers journalists? I guess we’ll find out,” Nick Denton, the founder and president of Gawker Media, wrote in an instant message Monday.

Of course a fight like this will be left for the lawyers and the early results seem to favor Gawker’s claims. That is unless the ‘found’ iPhone is determined to be stolen and there can be a connection made to the ‘purchase’ of the phone which Chen did do.

Legal experts said there was little doubt that bloggers qualified. “Of all places, California is probably the most clear that what Gizmodo does and what Jason Chen does is journalism,” said Sam Bayard, a fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society.

He said the case could hinge on whether there is an exception in the law involving a journalist committing a crime, “in this case receipt of stolen property.” He said “this seems unlikely based on the plain language of the statute.”

Well, one thing can certainly be said for this whole thing as it relates to Internet marketing. Gawker Media got boatloads (Hey, Carol!) of attention and likely increased site traffic that will make a $5,000 ‘investment’ and some potential legal issues for an employee look like a sweet deal. Call me a cynic but what it maybe, just maybe, that was the plan after all? I’m just sayin’ ………

6 Steps For Successful Content Marketing

content marketingUnless you are consistently feeding your inbound marketing machine with good, creative content, chances are you’ve seen a slow-down in traffic, search engine results and leads. Why? Because getting found online is about competing for peoples’ attention and consistently delivering the goods. There are very few one-hit wonders surviving on the Internet these days. Let’s do a brief reality check, then work on our content creation strategy.

How many blog posts or videos can you remember within the past 30 days? A handful? Out of the hundreds you probably read or viewed, most of them have either disappeared into the ether or you’ve tucked them away in a bookmarking site, never to read them again. How many tweets grab your attention? Most of us probably ignore 99.9% and retweet the rest, never to be seen again. Why are we so fickle online? As Emily Yoffe writes in a Slate article,

“…we actually resemble nothing so much as those legendary lab rats that endlessly pressed a lever to give themselves a little electrical jolt to the brain. While we tap, tap away at our search engines, it appears we are stimulating the same system in our brains that scientists accidentally discovered more than 50 years ago when probing rat skulls.”

So we’re fighting this instinct we all have to just tap, tap, tap looking for visual or auditory stimulation. When we find something interesting, we usually scan it, then throw it away. How do we overcome these zombie-like impulses and grab someone’s attention? Even if we get the hallowed click-through, how do we keep them in their seats? What about videos? Aren’t they the key to viral marketing? According to TubeMogul, “ten seconds into a video clip a little over 10% of viewers have abandoned it, rising to over half at 60 seconds or more.” So, content must not only attract your eye, it must also have the power to interrupt what you’re doing and keep you transfixed. To most of us this is a huge challenge. Here’s my content marketing strategy.

  1. Figure out who you are trying to attract. Chief Marketing Officers? Soccer Mom’s? First-time homebuyers?
  2. Figure out what makes these folks tick. Go to their social media sites and blogs and see what they’re talking about. Socialize with them by commenting and asking questions. Become a regular.
  3. Create blogs, videos and webinars that address your target market’s concerns. Do this as often as you can, ideally three or more times per week.
  4. Ask for comments
    by asking questions, and respond to the comments you receive. Ask for your readers’ involvement. What would you guys like to see in my blog? This engages and rewards your readers and gives them an incentive to follow you.
  5. Mix it up. Your content should not be monotonous. Alternate serious with fun, helpful with commentary, research with reviews. Use creative titles, images and short video clips.
  6. Be your own worst critic. If you’re getting stale, change the subject. Find some new way to communicate your ideas. Expand your own thinking, and you will expand theirs. If content creation becomes a chore, it will read that way. Step away from the keyboard and brainstorm some new ideas.

Remember, you have a few seconds to get someone’s attention, and getting there is only half the battle. You must reward their attention with good, creative content that keeps them engaged. It’s a tough nut to crack, but if you’re reading this post, you’re no doubt up for the challenge.
