Tips For Effective Google Map Optimization
Those who are well known among the internet know how important it is to be seen on the top search pages. Search Engine Optimization is something that most site and blog owners strive for in order to make a profit or have their blog read on a weekly basis. However, for those who actually own a small business, Google Map Optimization has become a very important factor.
There are many steps that you will need to take in order to make sure that you properly get your business up and running on the Google Map pages. When someone searches for a business or a product, your small business can easily come up on the search pages. This type of optimization is going to be a lot like the Search Engine Optimization that you are used to dealing with.
The great aspect about getting onto Google Maps is the fact that you have another outlet that can be seen by the entire world. Most of the time; you should stick to the local searches within your city or state. This will allow you to get a better response from those who do seek out your business online. This is a lot like setting up an ad within the local phone book.
If you are not familiar with how to successfully go about this process then you may seek the help of a Google Maps Optimization service. This type of service will create a needed business listing within Google Maps. From there you should start to be able to see the results. The great aspect about a service is the fact that you have professionals working on your side!
Make sure that you are choosing relevant factors to your listing online. If you do not know how to increase relevancy, then you may have some trouble being viewed within the top location results. Your keywords and your content will all play a very large role within this process. Test a few sets of keywords out for a few weeks at a time and compare your results.
Doing the proper research is also going to help you with your optimization goal. Take a look out there at the current listings within Google Maps and use this as a template. Once you get started and you get the hang of the process, you will then be able to start tweaking your system a little bit.
Google Maps Optimization is quite simple when you take the time to learn and grow from it. If you cannot find exactly what you need then try outsourcing this task to an optimization specialist. This way you can get the best services that will put you within the first Maps searches.

Google Map Listings and Optimization Pros and Cons
Google Map Listings and Optimization, when considering all aspects of this strategy, is overall a great tool to implement in one’s business. In order though to make an educated decision on whether Local Map Listings is the solution to your company marketing needs, it is important that you evaluate for yourself both the positive and negative aspects of Google Map Optimization.
In order to help you make a decision and address some of your concerns lets answer some of the most common questions that business owners have when learning about Google Local Map Listings and Optimization.
How much does Google Local Map Listings Cost? Google provides this service at no cost. A business owner can sign up with Google Local Business Center for free and enter all the information pertinent to the business. However there might be small fees depending on the industry a company is in, and the citations it is trying to build to its listing. When interested in building citations and trying to create relevancy to existing listings, it is recommended to ask a Google Map Specialist for guidance, this will help lower the cost and focus the efforts of exposure.
Who controls Google Map Optimization and how does it benefit a company? It is the business itself that created the Google Map Listing that controls it. This is beneficial to the company because it controls the information posted and it has access to the marketing tools provided by Google. This feature is very useful because it can help your company identify its strengths and weaknesses and improve itself based on the results. What is the 10 Pack and how can it impact ones business? In order to understand how the 10 Pack can impact your business it is important to understand what it is and how it works. Specialists, when speaking of the 10 Pack, refer to the top 10 most relevant local companies that show on the first page listed on Google Maps. These companies are ranked as the top ten because they are the most relevant to the local search that has been made.
Google research has proven that 96% of people looking for local information are not going past this first page (10 pack), this is great news for those companies that are included in this category and not so great for the remaining of the companies. However there is hope for those companies that are not showing on the first page, in fact, by using the tools provided by Google Map Optimization and by building citations, companies can increase their relevancy and work their way up to the 10 Pack in a three to six months period.
What type of information can people find when looking at your company listing? When someone is looking at a company listing they can see the store contact information, business hours, products and/or services provided, printable coupons, and even other clients reviews on the business as well as their personal experience.
Reviews can be both good and bad for a company; good reviews can increase traffic to ones business, bad reviews on the other hand can damage a business reputation. Although reviews are overall mostly positive, some unhappy competitors might try to harm a business by posting nasty reviews, and the only way to make up for bad reviews is to offset them with positive ones.
Now that you have been educated on pros and cons of Google Map Listings and Optimization you should be able to appreciate Google Maps and the value it can bring to your company.

US Senator Wants FTC to Look Into Facebook Privacy Practices
Last week we brought to your attention the fact that Facebook was starting to spend some time in Washington, DC talking to folks in the intelligence community as well as the FTC. Well, now after US Senator Charles “Chuck” Schumer’s action we can understand why Facebook would like to develop some friendships in high places.
The local ABC New York City affiliate ran this piece on the senator’s request. It’s interesting to see how the people who pay attention to local news are being “informed” about the online world especially when it comes to something they can get paranoid about like privacy. Schumer and most politicians want to play on the public’s fears so they can look like they are busy. What better place to make the public squirm than the idea that their private information is being spread across the Internet with no concern for wants and desires for that data. While it may not even be completely true it sure makes for good TV.
As with most actions of this type it is likely that the senator’s staff brought this to his attention and told him that it was a “hot” topic and he should get some press. While he is there for the “good of the people” he is there for publicity so those people will keep him in office. In other words, I wonder just how concerned this senator truly is or is he just trying to get out in front of this and give the appearance of being on top of the “latest and greatest’ concerns of his constituency. Don’t you love how the system works?
Anyway, Facebook obviously feels that if a US senator is going to call a press conference to announce his request for the FTC to examine Facebook’s privacy policies then they should have a say of their own. Here is Facebook’s response to the ABC report.
“We were surprised by Senator Schumer’s comments and look forward to sitting down with him and his staff to clarify. Facebook’s highest priority is to keep and build the trust of the more than 400 million people who visit our service every month. To do so, we’ve developed the most powerful tools of any major Internet company to give people control over what information they want to share, when they want to share it and with whom. Last week, we announced several new products and features designed to enhance personalization and promote social activity across the Web. None of these changes removed or reduced people’s control over their information and several offered even greater controls. For example, we announced a new tool to give users much greater ability to restrict the information they share with applications and third party websites. We introduced new ways for websites to let Facebook offer personalization without the need for any user information to be shared with the site itself. We also announced a small pilot program with three well-known and respected partners – Microsoft, Pandora and Yelp – to provide additional personalization on their sites, based on information that is already publicly available. These partners were carefully chosen, reviewed, and are contractually required to respect users’ privacy preferences. Additionally, they are required to provide an easy and prominent method for users to opt out directly from their website and delete user data if users choose do opt out. Facebook and its partner sites have also added new and easy controls to help users manage their experiences when they visit these sites. We think these programs will make surfing the web a smoother and more engaging experience for people who use Facebook while honoring the trust we’ve been given.”
Facebook wants to be the first to truly tie the social web together in a more cohesive fashion but it appears that this goal will not reached without clearing a few hurdles that are likely to be set Washington.
What’s your take on Washington’s interest in Facebook?

More People Believe Online Reviews
The forthcoming 2010 Social Shopping Study by PowerReviews shows a marked increase in consumer trust in and reliance on online product reviews. However, their trust isn’t blind—online consumers are also becoming more skeptical of those reviews, willing to take them with a grain of salt.
The majority of online consumers use reviews as research, and more people are reading more and more reviews. Reports MediaPost:
Results from the 2010 survey indicate that 57% of shoppers trust customer reviews as a research source along with other corroborating information, but 35% question whether they are biased. Factors that degrade trust in reviews suggest that 50% do not provide enough reviews to make an educated decision, 39% doubt they are written by real customers, and 38% said a lack of negative reviews or limited information. . . .
The survey indicates that consumers trust reviews more now than in 2007. About 41% of survey respondents said they read between four and seven reviews in 2010 before they felt comfortable with a purchase, down from 46% in 2007; 17% vs. 28% read between two and three; 27% vs. 17% read between eight and 15; 7% vs. 3% between 16 and 25, respectively.
Six in ten consumers research for a week or more before a purchase decision, though almost 30% only research a few hours. Although they don’t always believe what they read, credibility is one of the top reasons why people prefer to research online rather than talk to a sales associate. Nearly two in three consumers spend at least 10 minutes reading customer reviews.
The survey was conducted with over 1000 consumers who shop at least quarterly and spend at least $250 annually online.
What do you think? How can customer reviews help your clients (or you)?

3 Ideas for Creating Quality Link Bait Content
Lots of content savvy marketers will talk endlessly about that the best ways to build links. Many will tell you that the best way to do this is to create excellent, compelling, unique content on a regular basis, optimize and promote it. This method does have one inherent and obvious problem associated with it. Great content still relies on external forces, in the form of 3rd party webmasters, to pick up on your content and link to it.
For some of us, this isn’t the easiest thing to make happen. I mean come on, let’s be real here – there has to be a better way, right?
To get to the bottom of this, one question we should start with is: what really is a link in most cases? If you think about it in its most basic terms, it’s something that a webmaster (read: a human being) has to actually give you – meaning implementation within their website page. This takes time from that person, and time is something that people simply don’t have enough of.
What if you could actually create content that gave the webmasters of the world serious incentive to link to you? This type of content creation is referred to as ‘Link Bait’ and it’s increasingly becoming a tactic of content creators across the web. Here are three ideas you can employ to create more link bait.
1. Rank and/or Review some products or services
Companies LOVE getting free publicity, from any channel they can get it from. If you focus your efforts on creating some of this publicity for these companies, you’re likely to get some links back to your site from the companies who you rate well.
I’d advise you to be smart about this though, instead of simply publishing the blog post without any preparation. Let the companies you’re reviewing know what it is that you’re doing. Create a short survey for them to fill out before you write your post to give them the opportunity to let you know why they should be rated in a positive light. We see examples of this in lots of different applications: ‘Best places to work in Boston’, ‘Colorado’s top 5 ski resorts’, ‘Top 20 beers in America’, etc…
If you become good at this and create numerous articles in this format over time, you can eventually start thinking about even creating a ‘badge’ where you enable webmasters to place your ’seal of approval’ onto their site, the badge will link back to your site.
2. Say something controversial
Most people are intrigued by controversy, the webmasters or ‘linkorati’ of the world are no different and will link to you if you’ve got something interesting to say. Some of the most interesting things people say around the web are controversial. Take the recent uncovering of the new ‘4G iPhone‘ – something that was very controversial to Apple and the mobile industry, and Gizmodo, the blog that reported the story got lots of exposure and links.
So go ahead and try saying something that you might otherwise not say. Step outside of your comfort zone, you’ll likely find that from an SEO perspective it will help more than it will hurt.
3. Be the first one to break an industry news story
Breaking news is one of those things that is hard to find and report first, but fantastic from an SEO standpoint if you can make it happen. Here’s my advice: make a news story about something that someone else might report. Publicize something you notice about your industry. Other folks around your industry will more than likely find it interesting and link to it.
Your blog is a news source – blogs are forms of media after all, so go ahead and use it for news. You may find that it nets you big gains in links in return.
The great thing about creating link bait content is that it’s supported by Google (see this Matt Cutts article). So go ahead, get creative and have some fun with it! Why not try to set a goal of creating one piece of link bait content per month and see how it goes. Your blog will thank you later.
