What Small Businesses Would Be The Best To Contact?
I am a web developer/designer in Toronto, ON. I recently made a website offering web design services (Including PSD to XHTML, Custom Designs, etc.).
I just recently came up with a good idea. I could contact small companies in Toronto, and offer to build them websites for a very small price.
I am wondering what type of companies to contact.

All of them. But you need some samples first. Do a couple free for some charities as part of your portfolio.
I suggest you segment your target market. Divide them into:
- businesses with existing websites (excellent)
- businesses with existing websites (poor)
- businesses that do not have a website but should definitely have
- businesses that do not have a website and may or may not benefit from a website
It’s a little research, but makes your job easier because marketing to each of them will be different
Those with excellent looking websites may need a different type of service to those with a poor looking website. With those with websites, your challenge will be to get them away from their current web designer (if any) or if they are doing it in house.
Those without a website will need a different tactic in terms of selling. You have to convince them that their business could benefit from having a website. This could be your best bet for target clientele
Take your time to research and selling could be easier
Also, take a look at sites such as Guru.com or elance.com and try to find projecs outside of your current geographic area. Demand is plenty, but the downside is that you will be competing with Indians and Russians who quote bargain basement prices
