What should I do to make sure my website adheres to good website design practices:
The content: the substance, and information on the site should be relevant to the website and should target the audience that the website is concerned with.
The usability: the site should be user-friendly, with the interface and navigation simple and reliable.
The appearance: the graphics, video and text should include a single style that flows throughout, to show consistency. The style should be professional, appealing and relevant. The colors, fonts and textures used should have a purpose. They should target the appropriate audience.
The visibility: the website needs traffice. The url should be easy to remember and easy to type. It should be advertised and should be high ranking on all major search engines.
The calls to action: the website needs to have graphically larger areas that draw the user to the most important areas of the website quickly and tell them what to do. All websites should have at least 3 calls to action
The contact information: many websites hide the contact information on the contact page. Your phone number and a quick way to contact you should not be on every single page.
The hiearchy: the most important thing the website has to offer should be the most bold and easiest to find. I know it sounds simple, but many websites completely miss the mark on this one.
A well designed website will accomplish all the above pratices. These pratices should be expected and not overlooked when selecting a website design company.
